The 4 Big Disappointments Of 2010

I was gonna do top 5 biggest disappointments but tbh none of the albums ive heard this year come close to how disappointed i was with these. Some of you may disagree with this list so we'll see.
1Rosetta
A Determinism of Morality

For me, this was the biggest disappointment of 2010. After creating 2 monostrous albums in the Galilean Satellites and Wake/Lift, i was expecting another near masterpiece, unfortunately this didnt live up to expectations. The huge atmosphere and denseness which allowed me to get lost in their music and pick out on the little details in their music (particularly in TGS) is desperately missing, the once colossal sound that was in their last 2 albums was sadly sacirificed for a new direction. Whilst im all for change in sound and do appreciate the new dynamics in this album that Rosetta never had present before (and the bass is great), it just all sounds a bit flat compared. I know many will disagree with me, but it just didnt click with me. Despite this, its still a 3.5. But considering i was expecting this to be top 5 of 2010, this is a big disappointment.
2Agalloch
Marrow of the Spirit

Maybe i was expecting too much from Agalloch. But after 2 near perfect albums and an excellent album in Ashes, my expectations was high and expectant of another masterpiece. Unfortunately, despite some individually excellent songs and Black Lake Nidstang, overall as an album it just doesnt work. I know Crysis will agree with me that as an album it is too ambitious because it tries to carry out a concept through 6 songs but fails because it doesnt have the continuity and flow which made the mantle so good and it lacks the atmosphere of a pale folklore. It feels inconsistent overall compared. Again like Rosetta, despite this its still enjoyable, but i feel as though its better on individual songs than an overall album. Something i never thought id say from Agalloch. Again i expected a top 5 of 2010 but it failed to deliver for me.
3Dark Tranquillity
We are the Void

As someone who was a big fan of DT and who got into heavier music because of them, this was a big disappointment to listen to. Whilst i feel it is not as bad as some people have made it out to be, this album just feels like a watered down version of the last two. Whilst DT were inventive and kept their sound fresh with Character and continued to develop in Fiction, this album is an album from a band who seems to have become stagnant and ran out of ideas. The synth which worked well in the last 2 albums is too prominent and suffocates this album and there is a lack of any real interesting riffs. Despite this, its not terrible, its just not great either. If DT continue in this direction then i think we've just seen the end of the last real interesting melodeath band, heres to DT coming back to form with their next album.
4After the Burial
In Dreams

This band had so much potential after the re-release of Rareform. This band stood out from the crowd with their inventive leads and nods towards a more progressive sound despite having some songwriting issues. However, what made them a little more unique and standout is sadly gone with In Dreams. The tasteful Mesuggah influence that was on rareform has become the forefront of ATB's new sound which has gone from exciting and fresh (maybe fresh is not the right word) to boring and stale, washed in a sea of mediocre Meshuggah like chugs, juns and polyrythms. Whilst ATB's songwriting is certaintly more consistent, there is nothing brought to the table which is either remotely interesting or ear catching. They could of made this work, unfortunately whilst they arent a total meshuggah clone, they dont do much to expand on this new found sound. A very average album overall.
