12.11.10 | Other than these I was largely unimpressed and disappointed top 6 would be 4's the rest would be lower.
1-3 would probably be around 4.5's |
Piglet
12.11.10 | I share your disappointment with Radiohead. |
couldwinarabbit
12.11.10 | I was more looking forward to MBV and the avalanches. but ya it sucked. If someone said that a band
named Titus Andronicus would have the AOTY a year ago I would have laughed in their face. |
JulianAssange
12.11.10 | there is still time for radiohead |
pizzamachine
12.11.10 | @ Chambers: 'cause 'twas. |
Inveigh
12.11.10 | yeah 2010 had a lot of really really solid records and a few great ones. no straight up classics really, but High Violet's pretty close for me |
climactic
12.11.10 | don't worry 2011's gonna kill it |
couldwinarabbit
12.11.10 | @Julian to the best of my knowledge they are still in studio, or were 2 weeks ago.
@Inveigh their hasn't really been a straight up classic in far too long imo. |
pizzamachine
12.11.10 | "don't worry 2011's gonna kill it"
Now I'm worried, you fool! |
AggravatedYeti
12.11.10 | I've really enjoyed 2010. |
NeroCorleone80
12.11.10 | This year ruled |
SeaAnemone
12.11.10 | my 2010 was opposite. There were many many great great (3.5) records, with some fantastic songs on them even, but there was a lack of standouts. Like any other year Grown Ups and Cee Lo DEFINITELY wouldn't have cracked my top 10... but this year felt much deeper than others even though I checked out less music than last year. |
SeaAnemone
12.11.10 | and (maybe not in this case (have you checked out a bunch from your list the other day?)) but usually a title like yours is simply attributed to the list maker not looking in the right places or hard enough |
couldwinarabbit
12.11.10 | I have never been the guy who tries to keep up with new releases as well you have 70 odd years of other stuff to look at so focusing on a single year seems trivial. Like no one spends a whole year listening to stuff that came out in 1978. But since everyone on sputnik does I figured (mainly in the second half of the year) I'll do the same. So I have listened too far more albums this year than any year previous and while these were certainly not all the albums I enjoyed I found that overall I "loved" very few.
and ya Sea I have listened to at least half of that stuff you gave me. But to take for example that album you reviewed yesterday. It was fun and catchy but I can guarantee that in two years I will have no listened to it in almost two years. |
alachlahol
12.11.10 | 2010 was awesome you just can't pull yourself out of the realm of boring and inane |
AggravatedYeti
12.11.10 | I may have to agree with Sea here. While I understand your gripe with concentrating on a singular year (tbh I don't think it's that complicated to listen to new releases and catch up on old stuff.) it also seems a little hastey to say "2010 sucked" while you willingly admit you've not delved all that deep into what it has to offer. |
SeaAnemone
12.11.10 | albums don't have to be melancholic and incredibly out-there or intense or "meaningful" to be awesome in my opinion, just sayin' |
EVedder27
12.11.10 | I really enjoyed this year. 1,2, and 7 are reasons for that. |
Comatorium.
12.11.10 | 2010 was awesome, get off your indie-hipster throne. |
couldwinarabbit
12.11.10 | @Yeti I would say that I have delved into 2010 far more than any year in history. I have downloaded nearly all the albums on most of the respectable users lists (I have around 80 albums from the year). I think in that may lie the problem as I have been so swamped with mediocrity compared to my normal listening to few classic albums for previous years. I was also very let down by Crystal Castles, Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens, the national even Joanna Newsom lost her charm. And that much disappointment outweighs the pleasant surprise of something like neil young.
@Sea I agree. I love tga or pavement or brand new. But my personal taste in music does tend to lean towards the bizzare and out-there. And I actually do think that in terms of avant music this year as produced a few really quite splendid albums (the knife in particular). |
dreamobile
12.11.10 | when I made my list I could see that 2010 was better than I had originally thought, but yes there were quite a few disappointments for me too. The Monitor is my #1 also, which I found pleasantly surprising. I like it a lot more than their debut |
AggravatedYeti
12.11.10 | honestly rabbit I think you may just over saturate yourself on both counts. I find, personally, concentrating on only a handful of albums ferociously tends to bore me after the initial "Oh shit!" moments and I need a break. More often than not coming back to an album I loved after some time greatly increases my feelings for it.
While dumping 80 releases on yourself for the sake of blase critical analyzation is also the wrong way to go about it -- then you're just cramming too much to appreciate it.
Maybe I'm wrong as we're obviously different people and we cannot feel the exact same emotions, bbuuutt--try pacing yourself in 2011 and I think you'll get that better list you're searching for.
or maybe you genuinely just didn't find much to love in 2010. who am I to say? |
DoubtGin
12.11.10 | i have more than 100 albums with 4+ stars; maybe I'm just easy to please = |
SeaAnemone
12.11.10 | Yeti you're so smart I think I love you |
SeaAnemone
12.11.10 | yeah |
DoubtGin
12.11.10 | nah |
AggravatedYeti
12.11.10 | maybe?
also Seababy obviously you'd have my heart if it didn't already belong to Nina Persson. |
DoubtGin
12.11.10 | dunno, I think it depends on how many albums you've listened to, no |
witchxrapist
12.11.10 | 2010 was great. Rabbit just needs to branch out. |
Gyromania
12.11.10 | 2010 was such a good year for music, you just need to look beneath the surface. |
psykonaut
12.11.10 | descriptions for #5 and #6 are spot on |
couldwinarabbit
12.11.10 | I think the fact that 3/4 albums I was looking forward to the most did not come out. Then almost all the stuff I was looking forward to was met with bitter disappointed just created to much negativity for me to really enjoy the year in terms of music. That being said their were hugely enjoyable surprises like 1 and 2 came out of no where and are just wonderful.
But the only albums that lived up to the preconceived notions I had were tomorrow, in a year (though it was far different that I was expecting) and Phil Selway. |
witchxrapist
12.11.10 | You should probably try listening to things you've never heard of rather than hyping yourself up for things you already know about. |
SeaAnemone
12.11.10 | I agree with mappy.
It sounds like what defined your music this year was the expectations you had for things rather than what you actually heard, which sucks and is unfair to some of the great music this year. |
Jash
12.11.10 | 2 is awesome, his guitar setup for that record was so crazy |
BigTuna
12.11.10 | your description for four makes absolutely no sense. srsly what are you even saying there? |
Maniac!
12.11.10 | our top 10 have nothing in common |
Jash
12.11.10 | Oh and one more thing 2010 killed it so stop whining because radiohead didn't release an album like they said they would, there's always next year |
couldwinarabbit
12.11.10 | @Bigtuna that it thrives on it's boredom and from being so personal. Radiohead is so bombastic and deals with such a broad subject matter. They produce more than almost every band ever. Familial is just so intimate it is everything radiohead isn't and by being everything radiohead isn't it becomes very much a radiohead album.
@Sea their were a lot of OK new releases from new bands. But I would much rather 1 really good album from a new awesome band then 20 3.5 albums from new bands. Like with the possible exception of Titus Andronicus there is no new band that is going to be the next sonic youth or joy division. It was just a whole lot of mediocre.
On a completely unrelated matter. Why are there so many long albums in 2010? |
Deviant.
12.11.10 | I generally laugh at people who have been holding out for new Radiohead and The Avalanches for this year. Or keep telling themselves that "new Burial is right around the corner" |
dr2den
12.11.10 | lol radiohead |
Aids
12.11.10 | title is incorrect. The National, Kanye, Sufjan, all classic releases. 2010 has been an awesome year for music. As I type, I'm treated to another of 2010's gems: Kerouac. |
robertsona
12.11.10 | lol the phil selway descrip wowwwwwww |
zarquan99
12.11.10 | are you fucking insane? 2010 was an amazing start to the decade. especially good metal this year. |
couldwinarabbit
12.12.10 | High Violet is probably worse than sad songs for dirty lovers dunno why people liked it so much. |
Bitchfork
12.12.10 | My top 5 is: Kayo Dot's Coyote, Joanna Newsom's Have One On Me, Gnaw Their Tongues's L'arrivée de la terne mort triomphante, Janelle Monae's ArchAndroid Suites 2 and 3 of 4 and then either Julian Lynch's Mare or Wraiths's Dust In Our Mouths. Right now Julian Lynch is just a bit ahead of Wraiths, but Dust in Our Mouths is still growing on me, unlike Mare. |
Bitchfork
12.12.10 | The first three aren't in order. |
emmy
12.12.10 | le noise is so creative
it's like, hey mom, no band!
it's just me ma
|
couldwinarabbit
12.12.10 | I edited to have Joanna Newsom. The initial appeal wore off but she is still super talented. |
EVedder27
12.12.10 | neil is without a doubt one of the greatest ever |
couldwinarabbit
12.12.10 | ya. He doesn't have the most solid discography I mean when he is great he is great but he has quite a few bad albums. But he is isn't afraid to go there and change his sound. Like I said a senor citizen has the most progressive rock album of the year well that has surfaced so far. |
