12.03.10 | List rules, I do not recognize half but the ones I do,well i really love them.I will use this list for further exploration of jazz. Thanks for the effort! |
Psilocyanide
12.03.10 | Great list, will be referring to this. |
AnotherBrick
12.03.10 | i've heard 1 of them, and thats enough for me |
liledman
12.03.10 | if you are looking for accessible stuff, check out anything hard bop. my favourite artists are obviously the ones with multiple albums and therefore go highly recommended, but but on the other hand there are only so many albums i could fit so some great artists only have one. |
liledman
12.03.10 | thanks guys.
good work another brick. |
liledman
12.03.10 | also this will be continually updated and has more:
http://rateyourmusic.com/list/liledman/jazz_albums_you_need |
sniper
12.03.10 | Thank you. |
eternium
12.03.10 | That's a lot of fucking jazz.
I've heard four of them. |
patroneyes
12.03.10 | good list fo sho
I would have had "not for nothin" instead of one of the Dave holland albums you listed though |
PurpleDrank
12.03.10 | nice, bookmarked. |
Fuff24
12.03.10 | bookmarked. I am in a jazz band but only have expierience with some big band stuff like duke ellington. thanks man |
thebhoy
12.03.10 | awesome. You made me so happy for Oscar Peterson and Dave Holland inclusions!
I would add some Chicago Underground stuff, Weather Report, Vijay Iyer, Aaron Parks, Chris Porter.
I have lots I need to check out from here. |
DeafMetal
12.03.10 | Awesome list man, 100 rules. |
sniper
12.03.10 | Will d/l all the free jazz and everything tyner or coltrane-related. |

qwe3
12.03.10 | awesomeawesomeawesome |
liledman
12.03.10 | sniper for saying that you are a legend. the albums tyner + elvin jones did for blue note are fantastic, which includes joe henderson - inner urge + in 'n out, grant green - solid, plus some more i cant remember. definitely check out henderson though. |
Jethro42
12.03.10 | Awesome liledman, the evident jazz authoritah.
Being a jazz fusion fan, I need more Miles Davis and John Coltrane in my life.
major props for 9 (TAKE FIVE!!!), 61 and 63 |
Jethro42
12.03.10 | *Bookmarked* |
sniper
12.03.10 | Yeah I've heard a lot of Joe Henderson because so many of his songs are super-standards and I'll for sure grab in'n'out. Tyner is the man, he still sounds hip as fuck on 50 year old records which is certainly admirable. Thanks for posting this and the link to RYM, I'm always slowly but surely expanding my jazz palette but there are an intimidating number of essential records and it's hard to find a place to dive in. |
liledman
12.03.10 | cheers jethro, if youre up for some fusion have a listen to electric masada also.
yeah i know what you mean sniper, i ended up searching for top 100 lists and that sort of thing on random sites and kind of went with all the names that kept popping up, and the result is this. theres still a shitload of stuff i have on a "to download" list though, which i guess speaks volumes for the amount of quality stuff out there. |
Jethro42
12.03.10 | Jazz Fusion bliss:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ummV28JepgA |
sniper
12.03.10 | Absolutely. It's nuts what a continuously growing scene will produce over the course of so many decades. I'm gonna make some of these my homework. |
Hyperion1001
12.03.10 | $10 says this doesn't get featured in lieu of some shitty dig list.
But seriously this list is awesome, will be referring to this a lot. |
NeutralThunder12
12.03.10 | as the only other major jazz lover on the site, I wanna say job well done. I haven't heard many of these and definitely need to try some out, I've been searching for a second 5/5 for jazz. |
Jethro42
12.03.10 | Much appreciated liledman. Cheers! |
liledman
12.03.10 | sadly hyperion, that might happen. but thats why a lists like these should be made.
thanks for the kind words guys.
and prog check out pharoah sanders - karma, 5 material right there. |
igloodude
12.03.10 | Good list. It's nice to see jazz getting a little bit of love on Sputnik for once (though it doesn't get nearly enough). |
Jethro42

ButcheredChildren
12.03.10 | yah I favourited this list for when I go through my jazz phase |

liledman
12.03.10 | ...you would seriously not include black saint?
im downloading potters village vanguard album right now. |
Transient
12.03.10 | hell yeah, this list rules
would've included some jaco pastorius and shawn lane kinda shit for the more modern fusion-y stuff but you clearly know waaay more about jazz than me so whatever haha |
liledman
12.03.10 | thanks man. im not huge on a lot of the modern fusion, even if they are beastly players (which a lot of them are), i dont enjoy the actual music as much. |
Transient
12.03.10 | yeah i went through a stupid fusion phase towards the end of my last year in high school so there's a lot of nostalgia there as well. mahavishnu and john mclaughlin are just plain incredible, though. |
liledman
12.03.10 | yeah i went through a bit of a phase when i found all of these solo guitarists doing the fusion/shred thing, but they are usually only good for a quick youtube vid or something. guthrie govan is one of the few who stacks up well, but i dont know how the fuck his album has like a 4.6 avg rating on here. |
Athom
12.03.10 | this is one of the best lists i've ever seen. |
liledman
12.03.10 | thank you very much. i owe you for a couple of these albums recd a while back. |
Deathcar
12.03.10 | Wow, this is awesome. Bookmarked for sure. |

12.03.10 | I remember when I found out how to refine RYM list searches to single genres. |
Kimm
12.03.10 | I try to be open minded and experience the feel of all different genres but I have to say, I just could never get into jazz music. |
couldwinarabbit
12.03.10 | "I try to be open minded and experience the feel of all different genres" says the person with 44% of their piechart as metalcore |
Megadeth
12.03.10 | niiiiice |
Kimm
12.03.10 | Yeah I know but the pie chart lies. I could go rate more albums and it would change a lot. |

12.04.10 | Also, you should check out a jazz guitarist named Bill Monder. Paul Masvidal has named him one of his favorite guitarists, that says something.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6DS03CM2uI&feature=related |
liledman
12.04.10 | interesting player, thats for sure. can really see the influence on masvidal. |
liledman
12.04.10 | in his slower sections, that is. also his right hand is ridiculous, geez. |
Thane
12.04.10 | Yeah I know, there's another clip of him finger picking this polyrythmic thing, its insane.

liledman

....so on and so on |
JamieCTA
12.06.10 | solid list. i'm too lazy to rate many albums on here so my ratings probably don't reflect it but I am a huge jazz fan and this is one of the best lists I've seen on here for it. I think Adam Thomas had the other awesome jazz list I saw on here. |
NeutralThunder12
03.18.11 | you guys really have to get over yourselves. unfortunately the truth is that jazz, unless its miles or coltrane, is criminally ignored here, but I have actually found quite a few jazz fans as of late on here that I didnt know about. but really......way to blow one comment out of proportion instead of just focusing on the awesome music on this list |
danielito19
03.18.11 | Amazing list. I'm a huge jazz fan but my ratings don't reflect it. |
Steoandnoodles
03.18.11 | Oh man. Mingus Ah Um gets me every time. |

03.18.11 | no chet baker either prepare to die |
liledman
03.18.11 | only full bird album i have isnt in the database, and really most of his stuff ive heard is just random tracks and performances from different places. if it was 100 jazz musicians then duh he would be here but yeah.

liledman
07.11.11 | nice, thats probably my favourite from herbie.
http://rateyourmusic.com/list/liledman/jazz_albums_you_need
^the ever expanding list continues. it has another 65 albums so far, a loads more avant/free stuff. anyone who is keen should keep an eye on that. |
Douglas
07.11.11 | this list rules, just stating that fact again. Needs more Michel Camilo though aha |
liledman
07.11.11 | true, that guy is a beast. i dont actually have any of his recordings, though everything i have heard/seen of him is pretty great. any particular album you could suggest? |
Ire
07.11.11 | i'm going to try to get at least 20 of these in the next few days.

liledman
07.11.11 | awesome. hmmm solo drum... check out susie ibarra. amazing japanese drummer/percussionist who has played with william parker and others, though i am yet to actual get any downloads of her stuff. otherwise:

liledman
03.31.12 | have not listened to him, as with many other ecm guys. ill check those out though. |
lucazade22
03.31.12 | this is one of his most accessible pieces from Visible World: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80c28unBXRs&feature=relmfu
if you really want to get into him, though, I'd suggest the double album Rites - epic.
I lived in Norway for a while and he's pretty big over there, hence my fondness for him in particular. Thanks for the list, by the way. I'll be checking a number of these out! |
Chrisjon89

Art Tatum - Piano Starts Here |
jefflebowski
08.16.12 | best list on sputnik
no love for EST though? |
ZedO
08.16.12 | sweet list... |
TheFonz123
08.16.12 | I'm really glad liledman made this list, I already know all these albums but sputnik needs to know the essentials. I have two recs in mind:
ben webster-soulville
paul gonsalves-tell it the way it is! |
ZedO
08.16.12 | Really nice to see Grant Green here on this list, the only album I've ever heard from this jazzman is Matador. So, Idle Moments and Solid must be as good as Matador, right? |
liledman
08.17.12 | I haven't heard Matador to be honest, but from what I understand Green's later stuff is a bit 'groovier', those two are just straight bop. Solid features Elvin Jones, so that's a plus, and Idle Moments is probably the best line-up he had really.
No EST just because I really don't listen to him that much. The whole ECM and modern bop/cool jazz thing just doesn't excite me as much as the free/avant-garde stuff, so there is a little of that bias in this list. In this list I tried to really cover the big name players and a few more interesting and less popular 60's dudes. If I made this again it would be slightly different, but for anybody interested, my RYM version of this gets updated and keeps growing all the time: http://rateyourmusic.com/list/liledman/jazz_albums_you_need
Also, I encourage anyone else with their own recs or maybe different leanings to make their own sort of essentials list; the more jazz lists from different perspectives the better. |
Calc
08.17.12 | Another addition to this list would be..Niechec-Smierc w miekkim futerku |
jefflebowski
08.17.12 | fair enough, i guess i swing the opposite way vis a vis modern jazz.
that RYM list is a godly assemblage |
TheFonz123
08.17.12 | I love free and avante garde jazz, but I tend to swing towards the more cool/modal laid back shit becuase that's really my jam. |
YankeeDudel
08.17.12 | I def need to listen to more jazz. I love everything Ive heard. Gonna jam some now. |
Ire
09.01.12 | i've been in a srs jazz mood lately

liledman
05.02.13 | I would probably swap out a few of these for other choices, but I am content with my taste circa 2010. |
YankeeDudel
05.02.13 | yea well obv if you made this now it would be a tad different, but most of these are straight classics so its all good. in 2010 i wasnt into jazz at all i was getting high every day and jammin cypress hill. |
