11.28.10 | David Gemmell - Sword in the Storm/Midnight Falcon/Ravenheart |
ButcheredChildren
11.28.10 | The Wizard Of Earthsea,
it was written before harry pottery and sparks quite a bit of controversy as to whether harry potter had stolen concepts from this trilogy, imo its better than harry potter and the only fantasy book ive read that is enjoyable |
Duderino
11.28.10 | first couple books in the wheel of time series are dece. then the entire series went to shit |

Ursula le Guin's work is an accepted part of the literary canon. It's not simply better than Harry Potter, it's in an entirely different league. |

11.28.10 | damn you ConsiderPhlebas, David Gemmel is not cheesy man.
But anyway he is the best in the genre, twists in the plot, characters that are not necessarly good or evil and lots of blood. Fantasy novels don't get much better than this. |

11.28.10 | A song of fire and ice series, the castle omnibus (3 books in 1). |

Hyperion1001
11.28.10 | Read the Dragonlance books. There are tons of them, but the main series by Weis and Hickman are the best.
Awesome reads, lots of intelligent insight so as not to blow you away with just swords and sorcery, wonderful characters. Just plain awesome books. Start with Dragons of an Autumn Twilight. |

11.28.10 | Gemmell is cheesy as fuck, man - his early stuff especially. Still one of my favourite authors though. His characterisation is epic. |

11.28.10 | I don't know man, I've always considered cheesy a book which is preditcable and has all those fantasy
cliches. Somehow I think David avoided that. |

11.28.10 | The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie. trust me with this shit. the characters are unforgettable. It consists of the books 1. The Blade Itself 2. Before They Are Hanged 3. Last Argument of Kings
A Song of Ice and Fire series. It's been described as The Sopranos set in Middle Earth which is a really accurate description. It's been made into an HBO series. Look up the trailer.
The Erevis Cale Trilogy by Paul S. Kemp. In the D&D universe. Forgotten Realms to be exact. It's REALLY fucking good. |

11.28.10 | ^These are genuine recs though, they aren't cheesy at all |

11.28.10 | I'm not huge into fantasy novels, but I have a friend who is insanely into them, and I'll generally read the ones he highly recommends.
If you really want cheesy I'd say The Wheel of Time series, which actually gets really good but starts off pretty cheesy. Oh and if you're just looking for a stand alone book, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke is pretty epic. It's won a shit ton of awards. Jesus christ I'm a nerd |

11.28.10 | Any Star Wars novel. |
Yazz_Flute
11.28.10 | The Inheritance Trilogy was pretty good when I read it years ago.

11.28.10 | Don't read Harry Potter. Forget Fantasy books. Read War and Peace. Upon completion (which could be some time) sit smugly, pleased with your decision making. |
