| Soft Machine Ranked
Kind of obscure, but very talented Psychedelic/Progressive/ Jazz Fusion band from the late 60s-70s. I've really gotten into them lately, their great for listening to in dark rooms, with drugs, and such. I'm only rating their first 7 albums. | | 1 |  | Soft Machine

Their best album by far. Composed of four twenty min+ all of which contain great jazz beats coupled with superior musicianship. | | 2 |  | Soft Machine
The Soft Machine
Their first album, its the their only album with extensive lyrics (and those lyrics are often hilarious, and basically are them telling you how they are a bunch of slackers - there's a whole song about sleeping, its great). The album also contains great psychedelic organ work by Mike Ratledge. I would recommend this to start if you're interested in the band. | | 3 |  | Soft Machine
Fifth
These next 3 are close in my mind, all have their great parts and faults. Fifth is very weird at times, and most of the time that's great. "All White" which begins and ends the album is one of their better songs. | | 4 |  | Soft Machine
Seven
This album is very smooth. Being the 7th of the series, it lacks a bit of the original/experimentally feel of Third and such, even tho it may nearly be the musical equal. | | 5 |  | Soft Machine
Fourth
I think this album drifts into instrumentals a little too much and becomes jarring at times. But when its on, its very very enjoyable. | | 6 |  | Soft Machine
Six
Split into a uneventful live record and a quasi-ambient recorded disc, Six fits into their discography exactly how its name fits into their sequence of album names. They dropped the "th" patten (which was how they were being released in the US anyways), but kept the series going. Thus it has elements of the old band but still breaks away (with a new an talented keyboardist most notably). "The Soft Weed Factor" is definitely worth a listen; it fits its name perfectly. | | 7 |  | Soft Machine
Volume Two
This album doesn't really deserve the last place, but it's the one I'm least likely to choose when casually scrolling through my music. It has this whimsical quality, like their first album, but it doesn't mesh as well with the psychedelic instrumentals. It still has some great moments, like "Hibou, Anemone And Bear" | |
