Well, That Worked Out

I've been on an album-buying binge lately, and I've found myself taking more and more risks with my purchases. These risks have proven very rewarding, and I've broadened my horizons a bit as a result. These are albums I bought almost purely on whimsy and proceeded to enjoy.
1Yo La Tengo
I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass

Best... album... title... EVER. This is a fun, eclectic record that is worth investing some time into. Yo La Tengo's songwriting is subtly quite catchy and is Indie without being alienating, and can change from sprawling to concise at the drop of a hat without sacrificing overall flow.
2Band of Horses
Everything All The Time

All I knew about this band was that I liked the single and my very trustworthy friend liked this album. So I went ahead and bought it. While it's not totally amazing, it's a solid listen with some nice highlights and an interesting mix of mainstream-minded crafting and Indie sensibilities.
3At The Drive-In
Relationship of Command

Well, to be fair, I already knew I'd like this album, since I'd listened to it - sort of. 80kbps rips with a missing track doesn't really count. Upon listening to the album how it was meant to be heard, I enjoyed it quite a bit more, and I realized with each repeated listen that ATD-I kick lots and lots of ass.
4Neutral Milk Hotel
In The Aeroplane Over The Sea

Oh, folky Indie, what would we ever do without your simple strummed chords and easy flow, and your unexplainable and dense, dense lyrics. This album is quite different, but I daresay essential listening.
5Pavement
Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain: LA's Desert Origins

Damn fine Garage Rock if I've ever heard it. The original album is quite a delight, with some moments of true brilliance standing out amongst the album's strong tracklist. Not to mention an enormous, heaping helping of bonus tracks.
