Underoath 2.0

After some extremely annoying technical problems during the last list, I have had to remake the entire thing from memory (this time saved in notepad). During it though, I had the chance to switch up a couple of the entries and hopefully streamline some areas. Anywho, instead of ranking a bunch of songs (as rankings get inconsequential after 10 or 15 songs), I decided to rank the top ten songs, then lyrics, and then moments. These could be breakdowns, interludes, a riff I found cool, a line in a song that stuck out...whatever.
1Underoath
Define the Great Line

To Whom it May Concern. Such a great song, the build up to Spencer's part is epic and he manages to raise the bar even higher during the crescendo. Something about this song is just the embodiment of the album art; vast and imposing. "This is not your escape!"
2Underoath
Lost in the Sound of Separation

Breathing In a New Mentality. This is the band in overdrive. Every instrument gets the spotlight for a moment, but it is Aaron's schizophrenic drumming and Spencer's unwavering cadence that puts this song over the top for me. "Burn me down, let me start again!"
3Underoath
Define the Great Line

In Regards to Myself. This is the first song I ever heard from them and pretty much the perfect way to start an album. It manages to be a great snapshot of what is to come; a small section of the larger mosaic. Spencer's almost immediate scream of "This is not a test!" puts away any fears that they're putting all the heavy, crowd-pleasing songs at the front and meandering for the rest of the album. They mean business.
4Underoath
Lost in the Sound of Separation

Anyone Can Dig a Hole But It Takes a Real Man to Call It Home. This is pretty much part two of Breathing in a New Mentality, though it does tone down the pace a tad and introduces more of the dichotomy that Aaron and Spencer have whilst trading off clean and harsh vocals. "Oh how the plot thickens!"

Define the Great Line

Returning Empty Handed. Another great snapshot of the album as a whole, this time focusing more on the atmospheric, expansive feel that some of the latter songs have. Plus those throat-shredding screams at the end will raise the hairs on your neck. "You put me here for this, you brought me nothing but disaster!"
6Underoath
The Changing of Times

A Message for Adrienne. Coming from their last album with Dallas Taylor, this is another song that gives a good representation of the entire album. It was the first song I ever heard from this album, and is the first song I think of when I think of this album. I remember how brutal those growls sounded back in the day, ha ha

They're Only Chasing Safety

Reinventing Your Exit. Probably their most popular song, it shows off the extremely poppy sound they had on this album. It gets a spot here for one reason and one reason only: it is dammmmmmn catchy. "You got me up against your wall!"

Cries of the Past

Giving Up Hurts the Most. Much for the same reason as A Message for Adrienne, this is the first song I heard from here and is the first I think of. There are some pretty good (if not a bit simple) riffs here and there and all in all it's just a good representation of their more black metal-influenced sound.

Define the Great Line

Moving for the Sake of Motion. Oh my, this song. Had its "solo" and breakdown as the ringtone for my phone. This song has too many great parts to give justice in this short comment, so let me just say it is fantastic. "Brace yourself! Right now!"U

Lost in the Sound of Separation

Emergency Broadcast: The End Is Near. In the post-apocalyptic wasteland, there stands a lone figure -Spencer Chamberlain- who defiantly rallies the survivors around himself. This madness becomes an ironic island of hope amongst the hopelessness. Sappy, cheesey, naive...call it what you will, but that is the image this song forms in my mind. "We are the cancer, we are the virus!"

Angel Below, from 0:35 to the breakdown. It's so cheesey, but I love that synth. It sounds like it's pulled straight from the heyday of Sonic the Hedgehog.
