Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini Ranked

Gave it my best shot, this is subject to change all over the place. The more I listen to it the more I think it might be their best album.
9Enslaved
Axioma

It's just an ambient interlude but it serves it's purpose well. Can't really
compare it with the album's eight focal pieces however.
8Waruun

One of the slower songs, plods around for quite some time before picking up
with Enslaved's usual assault. It's the least memorable song for me personally,
but on any other Enslaved album this wouldn't be the song I'd consider the
weakest. I'm getting lazy. This was a stupid description but I can't think of
anything else to say
7The Beacon

It's like classic groove metal mixed with black metal and a fucking organ. Its
churning riffs make it arguably the catchiest moment on the cd, if black metal
could be considered catchy.
6Raidho

I feel like an asshole for ranking this as low as sixth. The most aggressive song
on the album for sure, and one of the more conventional black metal songs.
There's a great guitar solo thrown which is sure to make all those kvlt h1pst3rs
swoon.
5Night Sight

This one harkens back to the weird progressive stylings found on Monumension
and Below the Lights. There's a nice off-kilter jazz feel in the intro and outro
(even with some yazz flute thrown in for good measure =D) but it all acts as
the (cliche) calm before the storm. "Night Sight" kicks the listener in the
fucking head with titanic force...tremlo picking, blast beats, the finest modern
Black Metal vocalist's rasps. Then it all culminates in its eerily peaceful
denouement. Really, the song is structured like a hurricane.
4Giants

The doom sections seem a bit dull at first, but the "chorus" part is just
plain...epic. I hate using the word "epic" but it just is. It feels like being
pummeled on top of the head by a monolithic norse figure. Or watching them or
some other deep shit. Mythological Catharsis.
3Ethica Odini

It's got that plowing, wayfaring riff typical to Enslaved but thicker production
and more prominent keys beef it up exponentially. The closing guitar solo is
wonderfully executed, as well as the clean melody preceding it.
2Lightening

I really dig the "floaty" guitar lead/solo at the beginning, it conjures up images
of a ghostly ship embarking on an undercover journey. Whatever the fuck that
means. The clean vocals are the highlight of the album, and when the song
picks up in the middle with a crushing black-metal section, it doesn't lose any of
its original grandeur.
1Singular

This just BARELY edges out Lightening for the number 1 spot at the moment.
"Singular" is an almost ironic name for the song, seeing as structurally it
ventures all over the spectrum, with furious black metal sections, off-kilter
mathy riffs, bouncy Opethian clean hooks, and minimalistic ambience. One of
Enslaved's strongest songs for sure.
