Current Metal Favorites

List name says it all.
1Agalloch

Could you have guessed? If you asked me to actually explain coherently
why I love this band so much, I'd just shrug and say "you had to be there."
When "Ashes..." clicked with me, it was like a spiritual experience that
opened up all of their prior albums to me. They are the gift that keeps on
giving.
2Mar De Grises

My favorite band of the doom metal variety. The Tatterdemalion Express
and Draining The Waterheart are both masterpieces, Streams Inwards
needs a little more time to sink in.
3Kalmah

Kalmah proved perfectly with 12 Gauge that they had successfully
interfaced with the metal supercomputer and survived. That said "The
Groan Of Wind" is one of my favorite songs of all time.
4Insomnium

There are two bands on this list that are most likely to be met with groans
of disapproval, and this is one of them. Some grievances aside, I just love
the sound of these guys. It's nothing new, nothing special, they just do
what they do well.
5Wolves In The Throne Room

Practically the only "Cascadian" USBM band I have any real love for...
6Panopticon

Probably the only metal band from Kentucky I even know about, and
probably the only black metal band from Kentucky period. Amazing one man
project that rivals almost anything the PNW has come up with.
7Enslaved

Would be higher on the list if I had been into them longer. It took me
several months and damn near a dozen listens to warm up to Vertebrae,
don't know why. But I trusted the Sputnik crowed and now that Axioma is
out, I'm glad I'm along for the ride.
8Orphaned Land

"Mabool" blew my mind and still does, and though I can never convince
myself to sit through the entirety of "The Neverending Way Of ORwarriOR",
there are several tracks on it that are good enough to keep me hopeful
that they haven't lost their souls to Steve Wilson.
9Ensiferum

EDIT: This band is good, and is replacing Martriden on this list who isn't as
good.
10Eluveitie

All said and done, "Inis Mona" is probably my favorite folk-metal song, I don't
even want to think of how many times I sat in front of my computer headbanging
violently into the night to that song. Their whole career has been generally
solid with a handful of boring tracks, par for the course.
