Amazing Demos

Songs which sounded better in their original demo format.
1 Billy Talent
Devil in a Midnight Mass

Before the release of Billy Talent II, a demo of "Devil in a Midnight Mass" surfaced on their myspace site, which had a bridge part in it with lyrics along the lines of "I was told that the world wouldn't believe me..." This was easily the catchiest part of the song, and the version which eventually appeared on the album, lacking this part, was severely inferior to the demo, due to the lack of that part.
2 Alkaline Trio
Dethbed

Available on the 2-disc special edition of the Crimson album. This demo version has a slightly more upbeat sounding intro, and the vocal melody is altered in places, two great elements which didn't make it onto the standard album version. Admittedly, Matt's vocal's are a little ropey compared to the final version, but in terms of composition, the demo version is in my opinion far superior to the album version.
3 Funeral for a Friend
All the Rage

I think I heard the demo of this on a magazine freebie CD. It contains a different vocal take than the final version, which not only has a much stronger delivery, but is also untouched by the over-production which marred a lot of Matt's vocals on "Hours."
4 Megadeth
Count Down to Extinction

The demo of the title track to Megadeth's commercial breakthrough album (available on the remastered release) not only sees Dave Mustaine singing with less of the strange snarl he usually employs, and features more energetic drumming, however the main clincher here, is the amount of extra fills and changes in structure which didn't make it to the finished version. The demo shows that, before final recording, CTE was a much more technical song, which could almost have fitted on the previous, classic "Rust In Piece" album.
5 Trivium
Like Light to Flies

This can be found on one of the Headbanger's Ball CDs. Again, this is a matter of structure more than anything, as the chorus (IMO the best part of the song, as Matt's strength, vocally, is singing, not shouting) is repeated an extra time during the song, and sung much better than on the album version. The general mix is much better with fuller backing vocals, and much more audible guitar parts during the chorus.
6 Vendetta Red
Shatterday

More of an "earlier version" than a demo, but still, the version of "Shatterday" that appears on the "White Knuckled Substance" album has a much more spirited delivery than it's updated version on the more widely-available "Between the Never and the Now."
7 SikTh
The Plan is Lamb

This is in fact an early Demo version of "Flogging The Horses," available on the EP of the same name, and in my opinion is a far better song overall, than the finished "Flogging the Horses," owing mainly to the largely expanded subdued sections just after the middle of the song, which are incredibly melodic and atmospheric.
