Karnivool - Themata Ranked

Been listening to this constantly for the past couple of weeks, I prefer it to Sound Awake. Difficult album to rank, all the actual songs are very well-done.
12Karnivool
Omitted For Clarity

Yeah the last two tracks are somewhat worthless.
11Change (part 1)

Don't really count this as a real song, the ending always disappoints me.
10Scarabs

Feel bad for this ranking so low but when you're a 2-minute instrumental
interlude on an album full of 4-6 minute rockers it's unfair game. Wish they
wrote songs that utilized the down-tuned mathy riffs as profociently as this
song. Also death growls, or roars which would more accurately describe the
song.
9Mauseum

This song reminds me slightly of a mini-version of Devin Townsend's "Bastard."
Which is good.
8Sewn and Silent

The "ballad." Grows into a gorgeous composition after the humble beginning.
I'm also really in to the rim-knocks at the beginning, it seems like simple
nuance (it is) but it couldn't have been more effective. This should probably be
higher up now that i'm thinking of it but I don't feel like changing it.

Young and energetic, this would undoubtedly be a great live song. The verses
are twinged with nu-metal but the chorus and bridge absolutely soar.
6Shutterspeed

The opening riff continues to mess with my head before the drums accompany
it. The song utilizes a strong layering technique as it grows into a grooving
rocker. The short guitar solo after the second chorus is one of the album's high
points.
5Synops

It took me longer to get into this song than any other on the album but it's
becoming one of my favorites. The lush reverb gives a an interesting Tool-
meets-Radiohead vibe.
4Fear of the Sky

I'm a sucker for songs in 5/4. It may be one of the more repetitive songs on the
album but chorus gets me every time.
3Roquefort

Not many songs in the genre Karnivool play groove as hard as this one. The
horns version, although it would have been out of place had it appeared on the
album, is even better, and accentuates the song's dynamics by a healthy
margin. I really enjoy the short guitar fill leading into the last repetition of the
chorus as well.
2Themata

The title track comes complete with the ever-popular phrygian modules,
incorporating said middle-eastern atmospherics throughout the majority of the
song, whether it be the main guitar motif or the soaring chorus.
1C.O.T.E.

It's close but currently I cite COTE as my favorite song on Themata. It's got that
kickin wall of sound riff at the beginning as well as the vocal high-point of the
album, which is saying a lot. Just one of those songs where every member is
giving a top-notch performance.
