09.07.10 | yeah the government is fucked tru tru |
iisblackstar
09.07.10 | can't stand either of them.. just gonna lay low till the double dissolution |
kangaroopoo
09.07.10 | @Satellite - local lingo (slang)
@Transient - 5 state governments have successfully formed minority governments with smaller parties in the past 20 years and won the next election (NSW, Qld, Vic, SA, Tas). Qld + Vic Labour had thumping majorities at the following elections. |
Captain North
09.07.10 | I voted greens, but I am so thankful those idiot independents chose labor over the fucking liberals. |
Eclectic
09.07.10 | I am pleased with this outcome |

09.07.10 | what is this i dont even |
OllieS
09.07.10 | That Abbot guy was a tool |
kangaroopoo
09.07.10 | Australia had a hung parliament similar to the recent UK elections. The Independents had the balance of power and finally decided to give their vote to help form a minority labour government with the help of a greens minister too.
In politics you're roughly conservative (right wing), progressive (left wing) or dilligaf. |
Edwin
09.07.10 | Gillard's speaking about the national broadband network in her speech right now.
Imagine how quickly we'll be able to refresh the sputnik home page then! |
kangaroopoo
09.07.10 | Yes, this result was basically a win for faster broadband internet and better action on climate change. |
Satellite
09.07.10 | I'm for whichever candidate will prevent my baby from being eaten by a dingo. |

09.07.10 | It's a win for the country in general. Dear conservatives: there's no point having immense surpluses if there are fundamental flaws with all of our systems, and if we're falling behind the rest of the world in every aspect. I just hope Labor don't stuff up this opportunity to 'move forward'. |
DaveyBoy
09.07.10 | It's about f'n time. I didn't want to see that cowboy hat on the front page of a newspaper ever again. |

09.07.10 | Australian politics is fucked up in general. Labour is barely left-wing and I would hardly call the Liberals conservative either (although they're slightly moreso than the competition). The only legitimate leftist option this country has anymore are the Greens, which I'm happy to see do so well this election.
A double dissolution would be so epic. |
climactic
09.07.10 | Australia? |

09.07.10 | i think its part of jamaica or something |
kangaroopoo
09.07.10 | Abbot is very right-wing and conservative. I agree both parties have many policies that have blurred together but I assure you there is a difference between typical labour + coalition people. I like the greens and they are what the country needs to enforce key environmental and social changes but they're a long way off running the country. A double dissolution? We don't need another election just now and you might just get Abbot with one. |
liledman
09.07.10 | you vote for the party not the leader, saying all this stuff about abbot doesnt really mean much. yeah both abbot and gillard are less than ideal, but both parties are basically in shambles. this whole election has been a joke. the fact that so many people are voting the greens, even though they only publicise one area of their policies, shows how ridiculous it has all been. |
Captain North
09.07.10 | Labor isnt left wing at all. Labor is where liberal was about 20 years ago, while liberal is further left than they've ever been before. They're almost the same party now. |
tombits
09.07.10 | NpD, Abbott is ridiculous. His pious attitude and horribly backwards views in terms of abortion, immigration and sexuality makes the Libs look super-conservative, when in truth they're only a small margin to the right of Labour in terms of the political compass. I'm not saying the difference between parties isn't there (I'd go the ASP any day) but like you say, it's definitely blurred considerably.
And Liberals have headed further left than they've ever been over the last twenty years dawg. |
MrBirdoWordo
09.07.10 | Fuck Gillard

Edwin
09.07.10 | Thanks! Thrash is just as important as politics to be honest. |
kangaroopoo
09.07.10 | Labour pumping billions into renewable energies, education, hospitals, trades training, broadband, taxing mining profits isn't left wing? Coalition were either opposed or wanting to make cut backs to these areas. The Australian electorate by and large is pretty conservative - John Howard was PM for 12 years. In opposition 20 years ago, Howard was calling for cuts to Asian migration. You can be purist in policy but you have to govern for the bulk of the nation or you'll never be voted in. Rudd Labour had to become more central to oust Howard. I actually think the hung parliament was a good result as it will force some necessary changes to government but don't dog on our politics too much. On global standards Australia is a great country and what country doesn't have governing problems. Politics is tough and ugly by nature. |
Terrifyer
09.07.10 | yeah its nice to see a thrash list that doesnt just have the big four on it for once |
Edwin
09.07.10 | ^ perfect summary of everything. Couldn't agree more. |
Captain North
09.07.10 | True enough, I guess my anger and labor's treatment of the boat people issue, global warming and such overruled seeing the other stuff. But they're not going about all of it the right way, for instance, while I agree with national curriculum, the curriculum itself is shit and is dumbing down what NSW has.
But yeah, I know Australia is way better than most nations. Scandinavia ftw, but they get no sunlight so fuck em. |

09.07.10 | STOP THE BOATS! The most annoying slogan of the campaign. It shouldn't be an issue but Abbot was beating the fear drums and the electorate caught xenophobia. Labour gave in to the polls. The US have millions of unauthorised immigrants and we were cracking hissy fits over a few thousand. OZ politics was caught out by mass media exposure (internet/twitter), opinion polls and focus groups. I agree we want more authenticity, vision and risk taking with politics. Football coaches are the same, petrified of saying the wrong thing to give ammunition to the opponent or media. |
Captain North
09.07.10 | I have to say, this whole campaign and hung parliament just goes to show. The best government did not get in. The slightly not worse one did. |
AtavanHalen
09.07.10 | Oh yes, and Penny.
Also, fuck "stop the boats" and the boatphone and everything to do with that shit |
