| Film music...
...should have the same relationship to the film drama that somebody's piano playing in my living room has on the book I am reading" -Igor Stravinsky. Perhaps the most truthful words ever said about the role of a movie's soundtrack, a good score should be able to stand alone from the movie. Here's my favorite soundtracks ranked, one per composer. Movies like The Pianist, where the soundtrack consists of a compilation of a composer's music, will not be included. | 10 | | John Barry Dr. No
Suave, smooth, and badass, just like the protagonist. | 9 | | Clint Mansell & Kronos Quartet Requiem For A Dream
Having never seen the movie that this score was written for, I can safely say that this is a tremendous work. The string-driven Lux Aeterna, a piece filled with absolute despair, can safely be called one of the greatest compositions created for a film. | 8 | | Nino Rota The Godfather
As predictable as this choice is, The Godfather contains quite a fantastic soundtrack. Although the romantic title theme eclipses everything else by a fair margin, all of the music here is very strong. | 7 | | The Beatles Help!
Tied with 5 and 6. It's The Beatles, must I say anything else? | 6 | | Michael Giacchino UP
Occasionally dramatic, occasionally heartwarming, and just as often surprisingly depressing, UP's soundtrack perfectly fits what is probably the best children's movie of the past decade. | 5 | | Ron Goodwin Where Eagles Dare
First off, Iron Maiden wrote a song about this movie. This alone should tell you that it is good. What elevates it from good to great is the score, a foreboding, heroic piece that accompanies Clint Eastwood's bloodlust quite well. | 4 | | Pink Floyd The Wall
Tied with 3 for third place. While nowhere near Floyd's best, this is an appropriately bleak album filled with a despair that can rarely be seen from Waters, Gilmour and co. Contains some of rock's most recognizable and interesting tunes, like Comfortably Numb and The Thin Ice. | 3 | | Mikael Tariverdiyev 17 Moments Of Spring
While the title may seem like it's a romantic comedy or drama of sorts, this old Russian film is actually an espionage film set during WWII (a very good film, infinitely recommended). Suspenseful, nerve-wrecking, and very often touching, the soundtrack is one of the USSR's greatest musical accomplishments. Recommended listening: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQDGrT9on_0&feature=related (this is a private performance, not mine. I could not find the original) | 2 | | Howard Shore Lord of the Rings: Complete Trilogy Soundtrack
Absolutely stunning, sweeping arrangements. Not only does this score perfectly compliment the epic nature of the film, but it's an incredibly engrossing listen. From the lighthearted 'Concerning Hobbits' to the mammoth fight scenes, the album is nearly flawless. | 1 | | Ennio Morricone For A Few Dollars More
It's impossible to not feel awesome while listening to this. | |

Once Upon A Time In The West is awesome, but I slightly prefer FAFDM. Same with A Hard Days Night, it's great, but I feel that Help is just a bit better. | taylormemer
09.04.10 | Indeed Koyaaniqatsi, or any of the qatsi films.
Don Davis' score for The Matrix is a hidden gem that everyone forgets about.
James Horner did an excellent score for Apollo 13
And at the moment I'm very impressed by Hans Zimmer's score for Inception (Most of his other work is rather bland).
