Thrice just took the post-hardcore sound, which had been done much much much better beforehand anyway, and manipulated it in such a way that first made it accessible for many, then added a little complexity. This is why Sputnik has such an affinity for them, I think. I mean, the genre they supposedly "represent" isn't nearly as deep as Floyd's... they have much less influence, and they didn't innovate in the way Floyd did.
Thrice make great music (very commendable, Vhiessu especially is fantastic), but it's really still just a variation on a subgenre that had already been done so much better. I mean if you're willing to admit a ton of personal bias that's totally fine by me, I sincerely understand that, but anyone who knows both bands pretty well isn't gonna say Thrice is better than Fugazi or even a number of post-hardcore bands that preceded them.
Oh well, just one guy's thoughts... admittedly one who isn't REALLY knowledgeable about either bands, either. |
