Concert Slayed Vol 4

Technically it is vol 5 but I didn't make a list for the last one...
1 Dead Kenny G's
...

The night opened with a band I hadn't given a proper listen before hand. That band was The Dead Kenny G's which was possible one of the coolest/oddest sounding bands I've heard. An odd variety of instruments were used throughout their set, some of which were sax, keys, vibraphone, tabla, coffee can, and a baritone sax. I knew when I walked in and seen all the band members wearing odd costumes and birthday party hats I was in for something new. The style was a breath of fresh air and I'm definitely going to have to check out their releases.
2Gogol Bordello
Super Taranta

The second band was Gogol Bordello. Before the show I had only heard a few songs and I thought they were decent but for some reason I never explored further. All nine members of the band had a remarkable amount of energy, there was not one dull moment when they were on the stage. Frontman Eugene Hutz knows how to work a crowd like no other and if there was anyone in the building that didn't like the band by the end of the show I think it is safe to say that all of those people were converted. Just like all three of the bands that played tonight this band was very hard to pin down to one genre they had a little bit of everything and bounced all over the place but in the end the energy is what really struck me. I have a feeling that this will be one of those bands that is amazing live but in the studio it just doesn't transfer well. The show was enough for me to buy a cd though..... Gogol Bordello, I approve.
3Primus
Frizzle Fry

...And as the giant astronauts with monitors in the helmets slowly inflated the moment I'd been waiting for since I'd first heard Primus was approaching. Given that Primus ties with Death as my favorite band you can only imagine how much I was looking forward to the set that was to come. Primus walked on stage to the audience screaming "PRIMUS SUCKS!!" at the top of their lungs and boy given the ear to ear smile on Claypool's face we all knew we were in for something special. They opened with one of my favorite tracks, "Pudding Time" and Claypool sped on through the set making his fairly complex bass playing look like a walk in the park. They played a wide variety of tracks from their albums, a new song, and brought members from the two previous bands on stage and did a collab, the collab was golden and that would be a supergroup I'd kill to have release some material. Les switched basses frequently and even used an instrument at one point that I've never seen in my life, it almost looked like a scythe and when he pushed the lever at the top down it played like a very deep violin and when the lever was up he beat the hell out of it and it put out the sound of a drumkit. The night was perfect even in the hottest atmosphere possible, Les had fun bitching about the heat and trying to figure out what city he was in and talked to the audience quite a bit. After their set they came back on for an encore and went out with the tracks "My Name Is Mud" and "Jerry Was A Racecar Driver".
The bottom line is if this tour is coming anywhere near you then you would be missing out by not going. Seriously if your work won't let you take off, fuck it, quit. It was that good, afterwards you can die happy. Also sorry guys I tried to sneak in a camera to get a couple of tracks on youtube but they patted me down and found it on the way in. But I will tell you that you can get a free Primus EP at primusville.com
