| | Blind Guardian - At The Edge Of Time Ranked | | 1 | Blind Guardian Sacred Worlds
This and Wheel of Time are undoubtedly their two best songs since "And Then
There Was Silence." Where as Wheel of Time had a more off-kilter structure,
Sacred World is structured like a standard power metal song on steroids. This
takes the grandiosity and immense layering BG are known for and somehow
manages to up the qualities of both even more. | | 2 | Wheel of Time
Wheel of Time stacks up as the most complexly arranged song on At the Edge of
Time. The structure is all over the place, "progressive" for lack of a better term.
There's a definite middle-eastern twinge in the foreground, harkening back to
songs on A Night at the Opera. | | 3 | A Voice in the Dark
The first single, and with good reason. A Voice in the Dark sounds very much
like it would fit on Imaginations From the Otherside, except the sound is much
larger and better produced, similar to ANATO. The song manages to combine the
speed riffing and energy of older releases with polished layering and it's a very
good representation of what they've become as a band. | | 4 | Ride Into Obsession
Another throwback to their older days. Ride Into Obsession is probably the
simplest song on the album, but it manages to be the most energetic and, well,
fun song at the same time. It almost reminds me of "Mirror Mirror" except
there's a higher focus on the speed metal riffing present on Somewhere Far
Beyond or Imaginations From the Other Side. | | 5 | Control the Divine
This song would have fit it well with A Night at the Opera, although it's not quite
as saturated in layering as those songs. | | 6 | Road of No Release
This is a pretty interesting song from BG, it's predominantly a mid-paced track
but it switches between numerous different feels. It starts off in true piano-
ballad fashion, before chugging along on it's merry way with some interesting
off-kilter vocal melodies. The chorus is very melodic and subdued, although the
song seems disjointed at times. | | 7 | Tanelorn (Into the Void)
This might as well be straight out of Somewhere Far Beyond. A very well
constructed speed-metal song with an infectious chorus. However, I can't bring
myself to rank it any higher because it's really not anything new for them,
they've done this several times before. | | 8 | Valkyries
This one has a massive chorus paired along with more tame verses. | | 9 | War of the Thrones
It's kind of like if Skalds and Shadows were five minutes long. This is a standard
BG ballad, it's good but unspectacular overall. | | 10 | Curse My Name
Curse my Name is another ballad, and an anomaly. First of all, at 6 minutes
long it is WAY too long for it's good. Some parts I do find that certain old-style
charm BG used to have, but the second half of the song consists of basically the
same melody repeated into oblivion, as more vocals and instruments or layered
in. It becomes irritating to a point. | |

08.12.10 | Didn't even know this was posted lol. I don't really like Sacred Worlds as much as everyone else does.
My list would go: Ride Into Obsession, Wheel of Time, Curse My Name, Sacred Worlds, A Voice in The Dark, Tanelorn, Road of No Release, Control the Divine, Valkyries, and War of the Thrones. |
