07.29.10 | Being a good drummer goes beyond technicality and how fast you can play. A drummer needs to be tasteful, needs to have influence over the music, needs to fit into things, etc. It's way more than just hitting some skins. |

07.29.10 | Keith Moon? (the who)
charlie watts? (the rolling stones)
you list is laughable. |

well i only enjoyed the drumming he done in tgcd and lfdgd tbh |

07.29.10 | In my opinion, Danny Carey is the best on the list. Gavin is very tasteful, tight, and technical, and Blake is extremely technical and flashy, but Danny in an innovator. His parts are mature, creative and unbelievably powerful. He fuses multiple drumming styles effortless to make his own unique sound. You always know one of Danny's drum parts when you hear one.
If you dissect the drum parts of Tool songs, you will find absolutely astonishing things that Danny is doing rhythmically. That is why he is, in my opinion, one of the best drummers I've ever heard. |
JizzInMyPants
07.29.10 | i dunno josh, i never seen blake pull off a groove like mauro does here |
UnnamedOcean
07.29.10 | Yeah, you really could. I haven't even heard most of these drummers, but I know a few of them aren't anywhere near the rest in terms of musicality (maybe technically they are). Gavin is great but I'm not sure if he is the best on this list. |

07.29.10 | Fair point. I look at Danny as a completely different breed though. He's a rock drummer with experience in African rhythms and tabla drumming and he fuse all those things tastefully. I've learned the drums to most of both Aenima and Lateralus (the albums, not songs) and I've never heard a drummer approach odd rhythms and polyrhythms the way he does.
Plus I can't imagine anyone else drumming for that band tbh. He fits them so perfectly. |

07.29.10 | The best of the best? For the 150th time:
Jojo Mayer.

climactic
07.29.10 | Blake is fast and flashy and has great chops but he really doesn't do anything new or innovative. Gavin wins IMO because he fuses the tastefullness of jazz and funk with Porcupine Tree's heavier sections, and he carefully writes his parts perfectly to fit the song. All of his fills and rhythms are flawlessly executed and he adds little things to enhance the music most non-musicians wouldn't even hear. Listen to the Sound of Muzak, Blackest Eyes, and Halo for examples. |

07.29.10 | Yeah pure speed is...bleh. My metalhead friend always tries to impress me with these drummer who play super fast, but that doesn't mean they are good drummers, just good at moving their feet fast. |
JizzInMyPants
07.29.10 | But he has speed AND groove. That combo is just blissful to me |

07.29.10 | Drums on 'The Moon Is a Dead World' are pretty insane.
Danny Carey [2] |
Infernis
07.29.10 | Pretty good list, but come on man. Marco Minnemann! One of the best in my opinion. Gavin Harrison is insane though. As far as putting Krzysztof...he's fast, but I'd pick Daray any day over most death metal drummers. |

07.29.10 | Between 1 and 4 .....fuck 1 I guess

07.29.10 | I haven't heard all of these but Yanic Bercier is insane. My personal favourite would be either Blake Richardson or Tomas Haake. |
JizzInMyPants
07.29.10 | @ infernis
yes Krzysztof is almost nothing but speed, but when i heard personal universe my mouth just fucking dropped, i never heard anyone go that fucking fast b4, i love speed, surprised his kit didnt catch on fucking fire when recording that beast of a drum track. |

07.29.10 | All this 'best drummer' is bullshit. There is and was never a best drummer. That would mean that the drummer covers EVERY genre and is masters it to perfection; not possible. Therefore, no 'best drummer'. It's all about individual preference.
That being said, I think 1,3,4 and 6 (no order) are superior to the rest of this list
