| Replace Periphery's Vocalist?
So, a great many people hate Periphery's vocals, but love the music. Or at least like it. So... if you had the chance, which of these vocalists would you rather have in the band? | 1 | | Strapping Young Lad Alien
Devin Townsend. An utter vocal monster, he could provide amazing clean vocals, and a variety of harsh. It doesn't matter what you need, he could fill in most anything. | 2 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Miss Machine
Greg Puciato delivers intensity in spades, but is also quite capable of a strong melody, or just a good sneering tone. On occasion, he even whips out a pretty great high note. | 3 | | Faith No More Angel Dust
Mike Patton. He's an insane vocalist. He knows melody, but he also knows utter noise and nonsense, and just when to use them. His cleans are smooth and clever, his harsh vocals are wild. | 4 | | Circa Survive Blue Sky Noise
Okay, this is an odd choice; but wouldn't it be fascinating to hear Anthony Green in this kind of music? I think it would. | 5 | | Opeth Blackwater Park
Mikael Akerfeldt is quite the vocalist. One minute, a smooth crooner, the next, incredible roars. What he lacks in range he makes up for in style. | 6 | | SikTh Death of a Dead Day
Mikee Goodman and Justin Hill. Their tag team of melodic one minute, spastic the next vocal style would provide Periphery dizzying variety, I think. | 7 | | Mutiny Within Mutiny Within
Chris Clancy mixes power metal melodies and metalcore roars without batting an eye. Some have even said they prefer Mutiny Within to Periphery- interesting comparison- so, what if he were in Periphery instead? | 8 | | Tool Lateralus
He doesn't really fit in on this list, but much like Green, wouldn't it be interesting to hear him doing his Maynard thing all over this kind of music? He could make it work. | 9 | | Nevermore This Godless Endeavor
Okay, I've kinda run out of vocalists that switch between melodic and extreme that I want to list. But, come on, Warrel Dane could manage to sing over ANY riff thrown at him, and make it sound good. He's proved it extensively. | 10 | | Lamb of God Sacrament
Purely harsh vocals, Randy Blythe is, in my opinion, an incredible vocalist He's powerful, distinct, and his words can be understood. He has a lot going for him.
And that concludes MY list of options. Feel free to provide your own candidate, I couldn't possibly list or think of everyone. | |
Mordecai.
07.27.10 | periphery fucking suck dude | Ire
07.27.10 | none
every member of that band is worthless | East Hastings
07.27.10 | the drummer of periphery looks like greg puciato | BigTuna
07.27.10 | Schuyler Croom | luci
07.27.10 | Just replace the band imo | CutMan
07.27.10 | Okay, really, where are the ones who LIKE the band? I know you're out there.
Big Tuna: That's an interesting idea. I'd like to hear that. Any song in particular you'd like to hear him do, or would you rather they write material around him/with him to suit him? | CutMan
07.27.10 | Oh, to clarify, I like the CURRENT vocalist. I just think this is fun.
| Winsomniac
07.27.10 | Vincent Bennett. | Shadein
07.27.10 | Why all the hate on Periphery? | SCREAM!
07.27.10 | How the fuck does Akerfeltd lack in range? | Meatplow
07.27.10 | never understood the appeal of Townsend as a vocalist | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | "never understood the appeal of Townsend as a vocalist"
You should be shot in the face. | greg84
07.27.10 | Yeas, a good idea. I'd like to replace him. And seriously, Daniel de Jongh out of CiLiCe would be an ideal vocalist for this band. He has literally no competition in this genre. | qwe3
07.27.10 | "Why all the hate on Periphery?"
because they suck | CutMan
07.27.10 | SCREAM!: Well, have you heard him hit any particularly high notes or do anything particularly crazy when it comes to dynamics? He's a great singer, you don't need range to be a great singer, but he's a lower voice, and he mostly stays there.
Meatplow: You just made me sad.
greg84: Oh man, he'd be amazing. I wonder what he's going to be like in Textures, also.

07.27.10 | They don't need a vocalist. I have the version of the CD without vocals and it is a LOT better than the version with vocals (and yes, I still really liked the album with vocals). All of the songs on there were basically written to be instrumentals anyway. They are all extremely nuanced and constantly alternate riffs and rhythms. I say they just get rid of vocals completely or at least release all of their CDs as instrumental. | CutMan
07.27.10 | I disagree. Saying the songs are written to be instrumental rather belittles the voice as an instrument, and implies music of this complexity shouldn't have them. I think MORE bands should write music of this complexity, but still have vocalists. It's very creative, and the melodies often come out less generic. | iswimfast
07.27.10 | keep the vocalist. | botb
07.27.10 | with their old vocalist chris baretto.
and periphery fucking rule | crowing51
07.27.10 | Periphery is fucking awesome, the last vocalist should come back though. Or just release albums with no vocals which would still be awesome. | CutMan
07.27.10 | *laughs* I'm not sure I can be friends with anyone who disses the Dev... *total fanboy*
Crowing51: Have you heard the new band the old vocalist is in? | crowing51
07.27.10 | @cutman
no i haven't i didnt know he joined a new band? | CutMan

Yup. I think it's pretty cool. | crowing51
07.27.10 | Wow this is pretty good, yea i would of loved him on the periphery album alot more now. he sounds like a mini randy blythe lol | CutMan
07.27.10 | I know, it's a pretty great performance. You should find their youtube page and check out his vocal booth work, he's good at what he does. | botb
07.28.10 | ugh chris baretto sounds nothing like randy blythe. | crowing51
07.28.10 | i went to there myspace and apperantly, they are only putting chris on a song on a album, they will have different people on different songs. chris is in another band called Friend For A Foe | crowing51
07.28.10 | @bringonthebreakdown
not exactly no, thats why i used the word ''mini'' can you not hear the similar screams in that song cutman posted? | CutMan
07.28.10 | Oh, crap, I was mislead. I was hoping he was their vocalist... I'll have to check out that band he's actually in, then. | Kubrick
07.28.10 | To each his own man... I'm just saying that Periphery writes songs that are very nuanced. They rarely repeat a riff without adding a new layer or tweaking a rhythm. I listened to the CD a lot with a vocalist before I got the instrumental and I was pretty shocked at how much I missed of the actual music when I heard the instrumental version. Maybe I just prefer instrumental stuff, but especially with this band I thought the vocals kinda distracted from the awesome little variations of every riff/melody. Either way, the CD is great with or without them. | CutMan
07.28.10 | Oh, I absolutely agree, the CD DOES still stand on it's own with or without the vocals. Like you said, to each their own, I just find a singer able to sing over this kind of work delightful, something I look for.
The music is pretty fantastically put together. I hope they always release an instrumental version of their CDs... |
