Your Fucking Nightmare Ranked

Uh. Fuck it.
11Avenged Sevenfold
Nightmare

It's catchy but epitomizes the band's laughable meat-headedness. Pretty sure I
just invented a word there.
10Buried Alive

It's a bad Metallica cover which could have been decent had the execution been
better.
9So Far Away

A pretty standard ballad at first, with a slightly flamenco undertone. The first
3:30 is pretty boring and forgettable, but after the guitar solo kicks in there's
some quality vocals from Shadows.
8Danger Line

Initially one of my favorites, multiple listens have made it become increasingly
annoying. Syn and Zacky share some very high registered descending guitar
leads (resembling neoclassical metal slightly) which while exciting at first,
become a bit of an annoyance. Likewise the chorus becomes gimmicky and
passionless with cringe-worthy lyrics. A7X never have been able to do the
political songs well however, but it's not a "bad" song.
7Natural Born Killer

Ugh if the verse didn't rip off the verse of "Almost Easy" (which isn't even a
good song honestly) this would have been so much better. One of the more
aggressive cuts, would have fit in with City of Evil, albeit as one of the weaker
tracks.
6Tonight the World Dies

A very interesting ballad-type song. The verses have a lazy, passive atmosphere,
while Shadow's busts out beyond his range for a loud but subdued chorus.
Ultimately, it is effective and a surprisingly chill listen.
5Welcome To the Family

It's still got the uninspired, meat-headed verse but all in all Welcome to the
Family is a fun song with an infectious chorus. Surprised this isn't a single yet.
4Victim

The (female?) vocals at the intro and outro very blatantly rip off Dream
Theater's ballad "Through Her Eyes," right down to the melody and enunciation.
Despite that, the instrumental performance is a very nice progression for the
band. The most atmospheric, progressive ballad A7X have recorded. The chorus
ALMOST ruins the songs with it's awful cliche lyricism, but ignoring that it's the
best ballad A7X have written since I Won't See You Tonight.
3Fiction

I've written about this song a few times in the past few days, and am beginning
to feel redundant. Fiction should not work at all. The piano motif is clumsy and
obnoxious. The dual guitar leads which have made A7X famous are no where to
be found. Some of the vocal performances are...to put it lightly...awful. Yet
despite it's imperfection and apparent melodrama, Fiction works. Prominent
vocals by the late Rev are drenched in emotion, despite obvious flaws. Fiction is
an unsettling listen, yet I could not think of a more perfect tribute to Jimmy.
The song shows maturation in A7X, and honestly, i'm damn proud of them.
2God Hates Us

Hyped as the heaviest and best song on the album. It actually is quite engaging
despite the (predictably) questionable lyrical content. It's an aggressive, pseudo-
thrash head banger, and I imagine it will be quite engaging live.
1Save Me

Despite the lengthy 11-minute run time, I found Save Me to be one of the most
well-composed songs on Nightmare, and possibly in the whole discography. It
manages to structure itself well amongst the numerous sections and is
instrumentally sound. There is palpable emotion in the reflective chorus as well
as the outro, which is entirely effective. It almost ends too soon for me, Save
Me does not seem 11-minutes long at all and flies by rather briskly. I would
state this as a major highlight of the band's rollercoaster career.
