07.19.10 | look at the imdb links. Pan's Labyrinth and TKM are horrible comparables... thats like me saying 'I guarantee Fight Club is better than Aladdin' |

07.19.10 | pixar rules idk what makes you say they dont have soul |
Bitchfork
07.19.10 | That was kinda the point. But okay. Checking fucntional links now. |
Hyperbore
07.19.10 | Yeah, he's trolling, since he's saying Finding Nemo sucks by comparing it with another movie whose only similarity is in the title - Little Nemo, Bitchfork.
But yeah, the older animated movies were generally better. Pixar is A-OK though :) |
Bitchfork
07.19.10 | Oh I've seen Little Nemo! My grandmother on my mom's side had a shit load of 80's movies when I was four and I used to stay up and watch them all the time.
Finding Nemo was incredibly boring, and the jokes were incredibly mind-numbing.
Although Pixar did make UP and The Incredibles, so....
And why no Aristocats? |
Slum
07.19.10 | Dem opening credits. |
Hyperbore
07.19.10 | Nah, Finding Nemo was pretty good, despite being massively overhyped. Pan's Labyrinth, now THAT is a boring movie ;) |
acADHDemy
07.19.10 | @qwe because excepting a few high points, pixar's offerings (along with Dreamworks') have been pretty sterile...
good "family movies" =/= good kids movies. It's pretty sad that kids have to grow up knowing only the recent schlock...

07.19.10 | i liked the incredibles, nemo, toy story 1 and 2, monsters inc. and wall-e. that movie ruled. havent seen up or toy story 3 yet
cars sucked though
i dunno i dont think you can call many of their offerings "sterile" |
luci
07.19.10 | if Toy Story 3 isn't your MOTY then you suck |
acADHDemy
07.19.10 | I havent seen ts3. I like all the ones you list just fine (except Wall-E, and I think FN and TS2 are pretty avg.), AND I even think Ratatouille breaks the mold a bit.
They're alright, just not great. There's really not much that separates them from movies (in their tone) from like You Don't Mess with the Zohan and Juno. And in their animation, there's NOTHING that separates them from Shark Tale or Over the Hedge or Shrek.
There's just not much that lingers after watching, is what i mean by 'sterile' Nothing that actually effects you beyond a nice story. Adults can watch a pixar movie and chuckle and sob along with Up's banality or Shrek's cliches, but NEVER will an adult watch any of those movies and think 'wow, there's some dark shit underlying these folk tales that is going to warrant a repeat viewing'
i might not be phrasing this right, but it just seems like, for all their diversity and technical grace and (alleged) originality, the films have less character... |
qwe3
07.19.10 | forgot ratatouille. that was awesome too.
definitely disagree about the animation first off. theyre head and shoulders above others in that field. no contest. just watch FN or MI or Toy Story. even if you don't like them as movies, their graphical sophistication was undeniable.
as for the stories themselves well i guess it's whatever floats your boat. i for one really enjoy the way pixar tells their stories. theyre usually pretty simple stories but their execution is fairly sophisticated, and in the case of Wall-E you actually do have a pretty deep message being sent. I just don't really know of any animation that matches what Pixar does. I can probably list only 5 animated movies that I like more than nemo that are not pixar |
Bitchfork
07.19.10 | Toy Story 3 is one of those movies where you want to see it again. But if you do you'll totally regret it because of all the back jokes and the fact that you know all the characters too much.
Although, in that movie's defense, the ending was a tear-jerker both times I saw it. |
Hyperbore
07.19.10 | "There's just not much that lingers after watching... Nothing that actually effects you beyond a nice story."
You're assuming a personal experience is universal, which makes your statements wrong. Most, if not all, of Pixar's movies are rife with thematic undercurrents. This is what tends to separate them from the other movies you mentioned, which are silly jaunts in both intent and execution. |
acADHDemy
07.19.10 | IDK i just think that the age of drawn animation (and this is likely more heavily tied to the history of animation and cinematic-story telling in general than it is to computer animation) does a much more thorough job of tying old-world themes (religious, sexual, and racial norms that, undoubtedly still exist) to new-world ideals.
Don't use bubbly, billion-color landscapes (which I'll concede look better in Pixar films compared to DW, but not to the point that it actually makes a difference to me...) or celebrity voices to tell me to enjoy my life, or live in the moment, or appreciate your family, or not judge people by their.... It cheapens any deductions I may inadvertently draw on my own... |
acADHDemy
07.19.10 | "You're assuming a personal experience is universal, which makes your statements wrong. Most, if not all, of Pixar's movies are rife with thematic undercurrents. This is what tends to separate them from the other movies you mentioned, which are silly jaunts in both intent and execution."
i thought i said get out my thread with your 'we all react differently to bLAAAAAAAAAAABLAAAAAAAA.' I didn't say there were no thematic undercurrents, i just said that their delivery is too pretty and neatly packaged and well marketed to have any profound effect on someone who likes to think occasionally. To them, they're not much different than your 'silly jaunts,' only in the case of the latter they're not dressed up as more than they really are... |
acADHDemy
07.19.10 | (in 3rd sentence), "to them" = "to someone who likes to think occasionally"... that reads pretty awkward... |
acADHDemy
07.19.10 | and remember, this isnt a knock on someone who enjoys the movies under discussion (as I have already said, I am among this population)... I'm just arguing that there is something missing. |
qwe3
07.19.10 | i think wall-e and nemo relied a lot on immersion and as such benefitted from the insane production values that come with being a product of pixar.
i dunno they appeal to me |
Hyperbore
07.19.10 | You also thought -incorrectly- that what you want is important.
Pretty packaging and good marketing has no effect on the content, as these are elements of post-production. Does a good album become shitty if it comes in a kick-ass layout?
Obviously, these films present no obstacle to someone who likes to think, since myself and others have been able to do so after watching them. This means that, if you find yourself unable to think after watching them, that is an issue that applies to YOU. Perhaps your brain is the obstacle to thinking? |
acADHDemy
07.19.10 | @qwe i don't understand exactly what you mean (by relying on immersion) but i'm not going to ask you to defend how they appeal to you... this is a personal thing and an age thing and a moviegoer thing and there are two many variables...
@hyperbole you are too hilaridumb to be in this dialog any longer. "Obviously, these films present no obstacle to someone who likes to think, since myself and others have been able to do so after watching them." |
CutMan
07.19.10 | Pixar is amazing. I think it's funny technophobes like you fear new art forms are "soul"less. Pathetic. Pixar has more soul than some hand drawn cartoons.
Also, Little Nemo rules. |
tombits
07.19.10 | I laughed at Bitchfork bring up Pan's Labyrinth and To Kill A Mocking Bird as comparisons to animations. But yeah, Pixar is still great and Toy Story 3 was insanely, insanely good. |
Skimaskcheck
07.19.10 | gonna see Toy Story 3 today, should be good! |
tombits
07.19.10 | Just as good as the first two. There's this epic half hour escape scene with all these intricate little plans and stuff, I loved that shit when I was younger and still do. It's a huge nostalgic trip and I'm ashamed to say I was super close to crying in a particular scene near the end... if you see it you'll know which one I'm talking about.
I didn't even see it in 3D either, that would be totally amazing. |

@andcas long time no see, brother.
@tombits tombiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiits
@Brah yes, and i think it's too bad that the only time we hear about him is when his films are nominated for awards or screened at festivals... its too bad that they dont have more appeal, but then pixar/dreamworks has set our kids' tastes to a pretty narrow scale: no bright colors/talking animals/pop culture references = no wide distribution
@bloc u da man
@fxxkit fxxk.
@andcas i like ants life way moar than bugs life, but they're both just ok
@mungoloid ice age 2 had some pretty good jokes. yeah, it's not extraordinary, but i really don't think its significantly inferior to the other movies we're discussing.

07.20.10 | Actually, I observed that. I even thought about pointing out that many probably argued that electric guitar had no soul when it came out. Essentially, you just did my job of pointing that out for me........... I apologize for being so abrasive when I entered your thread, though. You just hit a nerve, and I have a bad habit of coming in swinging.
And, no, I'm not going to get the fuck out of your thread. ............ Nice list, by the way, though. |
MUNGOLOID
07.20.10 | yeah we pretty much have our differences when it comes to pixar but it has done wonders for the animated movie industry. the only thing negative i can even say about pixar is that they are probably one of the main reasons why 2D animated films are pretty much no more. |
