06.25.10 | music part of list is digs
discussion of these movies shall commence |
MUNGOLOID
06.25.10 | If it wasn't for Jersey Girl, Mallrats would easily be Kevin Smith's weakest film to date. I will never count Cop Out as a legit Kevin Smith film, NEVER!!!! |
BigHans
06.25.10 | idk Mungoloid Mallrats is pretty awesome. |
Urinetrouble
06.25.10 | me either because he only directed it. and mallrats is awesome. zack and miri was kinda lame and i count that as his worst movie |
MUNGOLOID
06.25.10 | yeah i'll probably have to give another watch. I personally liked Jersey Girl though. |

06.25.10 | discussion of anything else thats not kevin smith wanna happen here? what is sputniks opinion on breakfast club? |
MUNGOLOID
06.25.10 | shit is undoubtedly a classic. |
Urinetrouble
06.25.10 | best actor in that film i think was ally sheedy. you wanted to bone her and be freaked out by her weirdness |
MUNGOLOID
06.25.10 | my dad and i would agree with that. |
Yotimi
06.25.10 | Agreed. Kevin Smith movies are terrible. |
Urinetrouble
06.25.10 | you have no soul. you probably watch the artsy crap they show at film festivals passing themselves off as unique i.e. shit |
Yotimi
06.25.10 | Well, Film is a visual art and Kevin Smith relies on bad jokes and clumsy writing and has no visual style whatsoever. |
theacademy
06.25.10 | 2 is wonderful
5 and 6 are among my personal favourites |
MUNGOLOID
06.25.10 | yeah he even admitted to not being a great director and relies more on his writing any ways. |
Urinetrouble
06.25.10 | whatever man. 2 is excellent and underrated and 6 is just plain awesome. whats your guy's fav slasher flick |

06.25.10 | spaceballs or gtfo |

06.25.10 | watched happiness the other day was pretty awesome |
Inveigh
06.25.10 | I used to love Kevin Smith movies, but only for the sophomoric dialogue and nerdy references. I can't say I'm ever really in the mood to watch them these days.. Chasing Amy's still pretty alright I guess.
I saw Book of Eli and You in Revolt last weekend and thought both were pretty good, though nothing astounding. |
BigHans
06.25.10 | Last two movies I watched were Carlitos Way and Donnie Brasco. Fucking Fuh-get about it. |
Urinetrouble
06.25.10 | gonna go see inception soon. cant wait for that bitch |
BigHans
06.25.10 | I'll always love Kevin Smith movies, because I am a sucker for pretty much anything filthy/sophmoric. |
BigHans
06.25.10 | Bruno is an embarrassment. What an atrocious fucking movie. I liked Borat, but come on. |
Inveigh
06.25.10 | yea I wasn't crazy about Borat or Bruno, Ali G show was pretty dope though.
Last movie I saw in theaters was Kick Ass, which was fucking awesome. |
MUNGOLOID
06.25.10 | yeah bruno was a major disappointment but borat one of the best comedies of the 2000's. |
BigHans
06.25.10 | The best "genres" or "styles" of movies for me (not ranked)
1. Mafia movies
2. Frat boy/slapstick/grossout comedies
3. Cheesy Action Movies
4. 80's mistaken identity movies
5. Coen Brothers
6. Life affirming dramas (ie, Shawshank Redemption)
7. Tarantino
8. Warrior Movies (ie Gladiator, Braveheart)
9. Twisted Thrillers (ie Seven)
10. Horror |
MUNGOLOID
06.25.10 | oh the last movie i saw in theaters was Prince of Persia, it wasn't that bad. |
Inveigh
06.25.10 | I liked Shutter Island from a visual perspective, and the acting was pretty ok -- good enough to carry the film at least. I mean, the plot was predictable and rather linear for what it could've been (I felt they should've taken more liberties from the book) but it was still an enjoyable movie.
Inception looks great, but the PG-13 rating scares me. Pit said it was good though |
BigHans
06.25.10 | Jesus how did I forget to put sports movies in my top ten list. Brain drain. |
Urinetrouble
06.25.10 | i want spaceballs 2 but mel brooks porbably couldnt make a decent film anymore
my friend says theres gonna be a breakfast club remake. if so who would you pick to direct and act in the film |
MUNGOLOID
06.25.10 | hey if any one can make a good pg-13 flick, it's christopher nolan. |
BigHans
06.25.10 | They had better not fucking remake the Breakfast Club. You don't mess with that. |
Inveigh
06.25.10 | nice list Hans. I'm a big fan of cop movies (Narc, Training Day etc), character-driven thriller/dramas (Taxi Driver, A Scanner Darkly, No Country For Old Men), dark comedies (Lebowski, Fargo, Death to Smoochie) and basically everything else you listed. |

theacademy
06.25.10 | kevin smith is easily, and without reservation, one of the greatest filmmakers of our generation.
to say film is limited visual artistry would be to say that schlock like 2012, michel gondry, and m. night shyamalon's later work would count as good movies.
i can't believe how closed-minded some of you 'cinephiles' are |
BigHans
06.25.10 | I've seen about 500 horror movies at least, and the orginal Halloween is still the scariest movie of all time if you ask me. The music and the fact it could actually happen in real life (aside from the ending) is what does it. |
MUNGOLOID
06.25.10 | theacademy knows what's up but i still think the scariest movie i ever seen was the original texas chainsaw massacre. |
Urinetrouble
06.25.10 | exactly. 6 still gives me scares. i hated the films after halloween 4. rob zombies first remake was okay, but the second one stunk. put the series in the hands of a good director or a genuine fan |
theacademy
06.25.10 | my scariest movie is either jaws or event horizon. |
BigHans
06.25.10 | Event Horizon is some fucked up shit. |

06.25.10 | An awesome underrated movie is the Dennis Quaid/Jim Cavezal vehicle "Frequency." |
Inveigh
06.25.10 | I don't think films should be judged purely on a visual basis, but I think calling Kevin Smith "without reservation, one of the greatest filmmakers of our generation" is a bit of a stretch.
I mean, if you define generation as "since 1990" and "one of the greatest" as top 25 writers/directors then yeah I could maybe go with that. |
MUNGOLOID
06.25.10 | holy crap, fucking loved frequency. |
Inveigh
06.25.10 | how about Unknown with Jim Cavezal? that's a pretty badass movie. |
Urinetrouble
06.25.10 | good list but texas chainsaw over nightmare on elm street.
anyone here remember the bill mosely all american massacre film as choptop. it was supposed to be scored by buckethead |
BigHans
06.25.10 | Never saw Unknown. |
theacademy
06.25.10 | so i can't shit on you inveigh, because for movies, my generation is like post-1992 lol, but i think kevin smith deserves a lot of credit for becoming somewhat of a mogul without (a) much of a budget and (b) much box office success and (c) much critical success. He, along with tarantino, helped build miramax. Maybe its my age/geographic location/outside interests but i love the askewniverse.
I also fail to see how writing so vulgar (by traditional standards) could be considered sophomoric... |
Urinetrouble
06.25.10 | havent seen unknown either
waddya guys think of judgment night? enjoyable gangster/action flick but theres no substance. also, greatest film soundtrack ever. rap--rock mashups ftw |
Inveigh
06.25.10 | it's good. I haven't seen Frequency since theaters, but I remember liking it. |

06.25.10 | "good list but texas chainsaw over nightmare on elm street."
i don't know if you saw but i was ranking the franchises as a whole... TCM really only has one excellent movie and a passable remake... |
Urinetrouble
06.25.10 | oh i thought the first two tcms were awesome but nightmare on elm street did hav better sequels indeed |

06.25.10 | Anybody remember Brian Bosworth's "Stone Cold," and Charlie Sheen's "Beyond the Law?" Both undercover cop infiltrates biker movies? Almost the same plot. Awesomely cheesy stuff. |
Inveigh
06.25.10 | hell yeah Hans Beyond the Law is the shit.
anyone ever noticed how the first Fast and the Furious movie is the same plot as Point Break? just switch surfing for drag racing, bank robbing to truck-hijacking and there you go.
I can give you those points on Kevin Smith academy, I just wouldn't put him in a class with Tarantino, Linklatter, Scorsese, Burton, Coens or even Fuqua, Wes Andreson and Mel Gibson as far as film making goes. I'm sure there are also people I'm forgetting (Sophia Coppola -- there's one already). |
MUNGOLOID
06.25.10 | what about robert rodriguez? |
Inveigh
06.25.10 | there's another one i forgot
Christopher Nolan's quickly becoming legendary too. well, maybe not legendary...
OH SHIT. also Michael Mann. FUCKING Michael Mann. |

06.25.10 | mall rats is best here |
BigHans
06.25.10 | I fucking love Point Break.
"Are we gonna jump or jerk off?"

"Backoff Warchild, seriously."
"I was putting people away in this department when you were still popping zits on your funny face, and jacking off to the lengire section of the Sears catalog."

BigHans
06.25.10 | And Wes Anderson is a huge, overrated faggot. |
Inveigh
06.25.10 | Gary Busey ftw
I've seen that movie probably 20 times over the course of my life. one of those movies that just always seemed to be on TV when I was a kid so I ended up watching it a bunch. Brewster's Millions is another one. |
MUNGOLOID
06.25.10 | never seen any movie by him but always wanted to see The Fantastic Mr. Fox just because the book was fucking awesome. |
Inveigh
06.25.10 | yea those don't seem like your kind of movies Hans |
theacademy
06.25.10 | i was nodding along as i read your post, inveigh, about to get back to my work until i saw... Mel Gibson?!
was that sarcasm??? |
Inveigh
06.25.10 | say what you will about Mel Gibson the person, but there's no denying he's an incredible director.
Apocolypto and Braveheart alone should earn him a place on the list. |
BigHans
06.25.10 | What was your first guess Inveigh? ;)
Oh, and Brewsters Millions is a classic, I file that under "mistaken identity/con man" 80's movie category, because he has to pretend to be/do something he isnt.
Much like: Opportunity Knocks, Taking Care of Business, and the Couch Trip, to name a few. |
Jash
06.25.10 | Fantastic Mr. Fox was one of the best movies I've ever seen! Wes Anderson is a movie making god |
Inveigh
06.25.10 | don't forget The Secret to My Success and Trading Places |
theacademy
06.25.10 | i've actually never seen apocalypto, but braveheart is the only one of his other films that ins't a complete mess (and its a great movie, but not a complete triumph...) ... i'd hesitate to call him a better director than costner, and how he could be named on your list instead of eastwood is beyond me lol |
BigHans
06.25.10 | The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou = one of the worst movies in history. |
Inveigh
06.25.10 | yeah Eastwood's better I was just going off the top of my head.
I think Apocolypto is arguably a better directed film than Braveheart -- easily Gibson's best. The Passion was visually pretty cool, as long as you can get past the anti-semetic overtones lol.
my point is that Mel Gibson is insanely talented as a director, it just sucks that he's a nutjob. |
Inveigh
06.25.10 | that movie's awesome BigHans dunno what you're talking about |
BigHans
06.25.10 | Mel was awesome in "Bird on a Wire." |
Inveigh
06.25.10 | Payback was a beast of a movie too
and of course Mad Max and Road Warrior |

06.25.10 | How many of you fags cried when you watched the Notebook? Haven't seen it, but I've heard plenty of stories.

06.25.10 | I bawled like a bitch when I saw Old Yeller. Of course I was like 10, but something about Dog movies get to me. |

Inveigh
06.25.10 | but what about Can't Hardly Wait |

06.25.10 | "to say film is limited visual artistry would be to say that schlock like 2012, michel gondry, and m. night shyamalon's later work would count as good movies."
But there's nothing visually artistic about those. Special effects, arbitrary imagery, and crap night shyamalon do nothing visually impressive at all. I got no problem with writing in movies (which you could argue Smith is good at, but I disagree), but he should let somebody else do the directing. It's kinda like if a band wrote good lyrics but the music was terrible. Nevermind back to music.
|
theacademy
06.25.10 | i chose those 3 examples because they broadly cover all three aspects of the 'visual art' aspect of movies...
2012 is the only of the three that "special effects, arbitrary imagery" fits... M. Night's "Lady in the Water" and "The Village" are two of the best LOOKING movies of the last decade, without much reliance on effects...gondry represents the pretentious overuse of surrealism to translate symbolism, etc. (which i guess can be classified as "arbitrary imagery," although i think you need some inference to get there...)...
point is that what's 'visually artistic' or 'visually stylistic' is only part of what makes a good film... i really don't notice anything sub-par about smith's direction (besides being completely overshadowed by dialog)... nothing exceptional, but nothing sub-par... |
theacademy
06.25.10 | which re-write? |
theacademy
06.25.10 | yeah, but weren't there like 3 or 4 different re-writes for the movie? |

theacademy
06.25.10 | yea jeff nathanson is the 'hack' i referrred to earlier... weird though, i guess imdb doesn't include re-writes (he's not credited for coyote ugly either...) |
