There's quite a bit of free jazz in this list, hope you don't mind but I love free jazz. I don't know if solo jazz is really what you want, but Kaoru Abe is one of my favorite saxophonists. Check out Winter and his Live at Gaya volumes, they're amazing. I'm not sure if you will like his playing though because it is very abrasive, but I hope you will at least check him out. If you're looking for some great free jazz recommendations, check out freejazz-stef.blogspot. com. |

Sputnik has this problem: whenever you edit comments in lists, they lose all of their line breaks. Comments on anything else are fine to edit, but for lists, I'd just double-post. |
kirsten889
06.04.12 | Masochist, are you sure? my list is kind of long. |

What I mean to say is, when you comment on lists and you want to add/change something, just double-post instead of editing. If it helps, however, I happen to have your formatted list right here:
Eric Dolphy - Out To Lunch
Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady
Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz to Come
Yusef Lateef - Eastern Sounds
Pharoah Sanders - Karma
Albert Ayler - Spiritual Unity
Herbie Hancock - Headhunters
Sonny Sharrock - Black Women
Sun Ra - Lanquidity
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Weather Report - Weather Report
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Don Cherry - Complete Communion
Cannonball Adderley - Somethin' Else

Also, +1 for Weather Report. Jaco Pastorius, damn! |
FictionalFlames
06.04.12 | Grant Green - amazing jazz guitarist
Gordian Knot - jazz fusion/prog rock/instrumental, highly connected to Cynic
Allan Holdsworth - jazz fusion guitarist |
SgtPepper
06.04.12 | Id say look into Bebop albums. Bebop is perhaps the most accesible style of Jazz, so Id say start there.
John Coltrane- Blue Train,
Miles Davis- Birth Of The Cool, Kind Of Blue, Miles In The Sky
Freddie Hubbard- Ready for Freddie
Herbie Hancock - My Point of View
A lot of people seem to be recommending A Love Supreme, In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew- those are very "experimental" Jazz albums, which can prove to be overwhelming if youve never listened to Fusion or Avant-garde Jazz. But if you're looking for experimental Jazz try these:
Miles Davis- Agharta (Funk/Prog-Jazz Fusion), Live-Evil (Jazz Fusion)
John Coltrane- Kulu Se Mama (Bop with slight avant-garde elements), Meditations
The Mahavishnu Orchestra- The Inner Mounting Flame (Prog/Jazz Fusion)

SO:
Larry Young - Unity & Into Somethin'
Enjoy your listening! You can't go wrong with pretty much anything recommended here.
Edit: did not realize that i posted on this a little over a year ago and that the list has existed for another year beyond that.
