| Old Vs New
A band is born. They begin their career quite well, become "underground famous", recieve a lot of praise for their music. and the suddenly BAM - the next album is something completely different. Its too watered-down, too mainstream sounding. The band begins to recieve more and more radio airplay, soon they headline big festivals. Hot Topic sells all their "new" albums and merchandise. Soon the fans of the "old" material become bitter and angry assholes, constantly whining about how that band sold-out and dreaming about the long passed by glory days. Sounds familiar, eh? To tell you the truth, I like a few of these "sell-out" bands. And I like BOTH "old" and "new" sound. The point of this list is to figure out wheather SputnikMusic is full of elitists, poser scene kids, or just people with different tastes in music. I'm going to list two albums from some of the bands I like - one "old" and one "new", Let's see what happens. | | 1 | | In Flames Clayman
Well, this could be the last great In Flames record or the first weak one. For some, at least. It may be a bit less melodic death metal than their previous releases, but I enjoy it nevertheless.
Favourite song: Only for the Weak | | 2 | | In Flames Reroute to Remain
OK, I am cheating here - Come Clarity is my favourite "new" In Flames album. But that would be just too predictable, wouldn't it? Anyway, this deserves the hate it gets - I mean, thats one GIGANTIC step down for the band. But really, it's not completely terrible. I'd rather have this playing on the local radio station than Nickleback.
Favourite song: Free Fall | | 3 | | Killswitch Engage Alive or Just Breathing
Sort of a landmark achievement for KsE, isn't it? One of the first albums with screaming I really enjoyed thoroughly. It basicaly changed my perception on more extreme forms of music.
Favourite song: My Last Serenade | | 4 | | Killswitch Engage As Daylight Dies
A lot of people dislike this. I guess I can understand - it's quite simplistic when
compared to their previous efforts. To me, it's a great listen - melodies are
memorable, Jones' clean vocals at their best, still decent lyrics... If someone asked me, what my favourite KsE album is, it would be this one. If they would ask which one is the BEST, I would definetly point to AoJB.
Favourite song: Eye of the Storm | | 5 | | Metallica ...and Justice for All
Good old thrash... sort of. Even with all it's flaws, like the lack of bass, awful production and some songs that just plod along (looking at you, To Live is to Die), this is still an amazing record. Not their best, of course, but still...
Favourite song: Dyer's Eve | | 6 | | Metallica Load
Metallica's "rock phase", as one friend said it, "was a mild disaster". Talk about understatement. Anyway, even though I've got a feeling I'm gonna get a lot of hate for this, I find this album really underrated. Sure, it's far off a great record, but it's not as bad as people think.
Favourite song: 2x4 | | 7 | | Soilwork A Predator's Portrait
Soilwork isn't the first name that comes when you think "good melodic death metal". It might be the first one to come when you're thinging about "average/shitty melodic death metal" I dunno. But I digress. This album is a testament to all things that could be loved about "old" Soilwork.
Favourite song: Needlefeast | | 8 | | Soilwork Stabbing the Drama
Either the best or the worst of "new" Soilwork. I find it the best, because it's quite appealing to me. Chuggy guitars, pretty good drumming decent screaming and awesome clean vocal. It's like dream come true... for me anyways. There goes my musical integrity...
Favourite song: Wherever Thorns May Grow | |

04.28.10 | WRONG | BeardedIdiot
04.28.10 | Oh, OK. List rules, discuss | Inveigh
04.28.10 | I like how 1 and 2 were released back-to-back yet appear on an "old vs. new" list. Nonetheless, both good albums. I actually like all the albums on this list, I even like As Daylight Dies better than The End of Heartache. Stabbing the Drama isn't that good, but it's definitely better than Figure Number Five or Sworn to a Great Divide. Here's to hoping the new one's better. | BigHans
04.28.10 | Truth. As Daylight Dies destroys Alive or Just Breathing. If you pan as Daylight Dies you are simply just trying to be cool, there is nothing wrong with that album. | Inveigh
04.28.10 | well, it definitely isn't better than AoJB to me, but it's easily their second best imo. My Curse is probably my least favorite song actually, pretty much every song on it rules; especially Still Beats Your Name. | BigHans
04.28.10 | Fixation on the Darkness and My Last Serenade are fantastic songs I'll digress. End of Heartache is great as well. My fave off ADD is This is Absolution. | BeardedIdiot
04.28.10 | Yeah, I was torn between Eye of the Storm and Still Beats Your Name as my favourite tracks from ADD. EotS prevaild because of the uplifting feeling it gives. And Clayman and RtR are supposed to represent the difference in sound, Clayman is still the "old" IF sound, while RtR is the "new" one. Though I probably should've picked Whoracle or Colony, but Clayman is my favourite so...
And BigHans, hope you're being sarcastic about ADD destroying AoJB. If yes, good one. If not, WTF?! | BigHans
04.28.10 | I like it better, what can I say. I also like End of Heartache better. The only Kilswitch album I really don't like is the current one. AoJB is a good album, I just really enjoy the other two more.
That said, the chorus of Fixation on the Darkness is one of my favorite moments in music. | porch
04.28.10 | ugh killswitch | BigHans
04.28.10 | Also, alot of people thought Clayman was a sellout. A better comparison would be Whoracle or Jester Race vs Come Clarity. | BeardedIdiot
04.28.10 | Well I like ADD better too, but AoJB is definetly more technical so I guess it is superior. And WTH, schocking news: Claymans is sellout album :D Everyday you learn something new | 8bit
04.28.10 | wat about a7x?! | AnotherBrick
04.28.10 | lol @ selling out | BeardedIdiot
04.28.10 | Never listened to them, tbh | MoosechriS
04.28.10 | Can't comment on in flames as i dont have reroute to remain. But preffers for the other 2.
Alive or Just Breathing > As Daylight Dies
