Shoegaze is an offshoot of Alternative Rock (whatever the fuck that is) that emphasizes the feel and atmosphere of songs, rather than hooks and lyrics. Most Shoegaze is typified by droning, effect-laden guitars and "dreamy" vocals (Dream Pop is a closely-related genre, as is Post Rock). And if you're wondering, the term "shoegaze" came about because during concerts, these bands would constantly look down to change effect pedals...so they would essentially gaze at their shoes throughout the entire show.
