Emim
03.03.10 | Borders don't need to be militarized, just enforced.
"not if you live in southern california or florida."
Yes, even then. I speak Spanish, but most people don't. The citizens should never have to bend to the will of the immigrants. |
eternium
03.03.10 | I live in a place that is flooded with illegal Mexicans. I am aware that they are being chosen over citizens by employers, because they can get the illegals for work for less than minimum wage.
My solution: Make it easier to those people to become citizens, document them, stating that they are in the process, require them to learn English in the process, deport them if they break a law in the process, make it easier for people in Mexico to immigrate, while further securing the border from fence hoppers.
That way they will be Americans and be treated as such. |

I wouldn't go live in Japan unless I spoke Japanese. It's just common sense. In order to read things such as road signs and communicate with the police, you have to know English. I'm all for a melting pot, but language barriers should be broken. Thus, the minority should learn the majority's language. |
eternium

03.03.10 | its a foolish nativist sentiment. you could move to japan and get by fine without speaking japanese. you know why? because so many people know how to speak english.
im just curious what is the net positive that will come from a national language?
"make it easier for people in Mexico to immigrate, while further securing the border from fence hoppers."
problem is that "securing the border" reinforces this retarded concept of 'american entitlement' - that somehow needy persons from other countries are undeserving of basic human rights, rights that may be obtained through the arduous process of seasonal migration... making it easier for people to immigrate here, documentation, etc. beget social costs that, as long as there is a figurative wall (and trust me, it will forever be FIGURATIVE and ARTIFICIAL and never be "secured"), people will continue to be opposed to allowing. Best way to move towards your plan is to start thinking of our neighbors as no different from american citizens. |

"Much better question, how don't they?" - this is you, not having an answer...
UNDOCUMENTED immigrants (because no person can truly be classified as illegal), working illegally, do not pay property taxes, obviously, but they do contribute a HUGE tax credit to the U.S. by forefeiting any rights to refunds from taxes withheld throughout the work year.
Finally, i didn't think people still existed who make the 'DEY DOOK OUR JOBZ' bullshit argument. How many americans do you know that want to work on farms for the agricultural minimum wage? how many americans are looking for backroom jobs in kitchens or restaurant staffing. Undocumented immigrants occupy a sector of the economy-probably the only sector of the economy where a surplus of jobs currently exists.

Y'all are both either retarded, or well, retarded.

None, because THE FUCKING ILLEGALS TOOK THEM ALL. You prove my argument. And they are ILLEGAL immigrants, because they immigrated illegally (imagine that!). The difference between me and "that poor schmuck" is that I WAS born here. I don't give a fuck if that is fair or not. "Hey, Mr. Bill Gates, you know it's not really fair for you to be a billionaire. You should give me your money."???
You seem to think such a phrase as "leave your front door unlocked" constitutes some sort of lack of original thinking. That is the most ignorant cop out I have ever heard. |
eternium
03.03.10 | Lol, now I'm disagreeing with you again.
They are hardworking people and they are contributing taxes. That's why they should be given the chance to become American citizens, on certain conditions (such as learning English), so that they will be paid at least minimum wage and have worker's rights (the reason they are hired over citizens), as well as paying taxes like everyone else. |
Emim
03.03.10 | If they are to become citizens, more power to 'em. If not, then get out of the country. I still agree with your method btw. |
SeaAnemone
03.03.10 | lol you think there's a ton of Americans in line to work hard jobs that pay below minimum wage, the only problem is that the illegals took em all!? haha |
Emim
03.03.10 | Below minimum wage? What? There's a reason it's called minimum wage, because legally that is the minimum you can pay out.
And yes, there are, especially with the recession. I've worked those kind of jobs myself. |
eternium
03.03.10 | There are Americans willing to work those jobs, even if the majority wouldn't.
Fact is, an American would be paid at least the legal minimum wage and would have better working conditions. Otherwise, that person could sue. An immigrant cannot sue.
I don't blame the immigrants, I blame the businesses. They just want to have a better life, while the business only wants to make money. |
Emim
03.03.10 | I blame everyone. |
SeaAnemone
03.03.10 | a. sorry, meant minimum wage
b. but you're most likely a teenager, somebody who doesn't provide for a family
when you're dealing with low-skill jobs like these, the illegal workers and the Americans they're competing with are entirely different. the Americans lack what it takes to make it in more sophisticated profession (they simply lack the skills, come from a bad background, etc.). On the other hand, the immigrants are MUCH more motivated (I've worked alongside some, actually) and productive. Therefore, the companies choose to hire the more productive, motivated candidates. |
Emim
03.03.10 | Teens are the ones without the most jobs. Motivated or not, the jobs should be for Americans first. |
SeaAnemone
03.03.10 | better workers or not Americans should be first? |
Emim
03.03.10 | Yes. |
SeaAnemone
03.03.10 | okkkkkkk but it's kinda the companies' goal to make as much money as possible |
Emim
03.03.10 | Well, motivated or not I believe was the original word choice. Better depends entirely on the person, not their immigration status. |
theacademy
03.03.10 | so much wrong with last couple of exchanges.
1. an immigrant most certainly can sue. and they can win. and they have won. yes, even undocumented immigrants. when FLSA claims are brought, courts don't want to provide an incentive for employers to force marginalized workers (like undocumented immigrants) into oppressive situations by not honoring workplace regulations. so that point falls.
2. americans are not looking for seasonal agricultural work, nor are they looking (generally) for part time, day labor, or other jobs where they wouldn't be classified as employees. These jobs don't have benefits that americans (generally, remember we are talking about the general, adult, independent population here. bread earners) pursue, like health insurance. the sectors of the economy suffering job loss during this recession are right in the middle. It's not like you see restaurants or farms laying off workers. undocumented workers do not take away office jobs from anyone. |
theacademy
03.03.10 | "Below minimum wage? What? There's a reason it's called minimum wage, because legally that is the minimum you can pay out."
certain jobs don't exist at a minimum wage. a minimum wage, by definition, creates unemployment. ask someguest to explain this to you if you haven't taken an economics class yet. |
eternium
03.03.10 | If they had the same rights as Americans, then it wouldn't be a problem.
But of course a business would pick someone who can't sue over an American who can, no matter who is a better worker. They're basically labor slaves.
There is a disadvantage no matter who works harder and it hurts both groups. |
Emim
03.03.10 | A job is a job. When the need arises, "bread-earners" will take what they can get. As for these season and part-time jobs, that's where teens have always fallen. |

In west Philadelphia born and raised
On the playground was where I spent most of my days
Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool
And all shootin some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys
Who were up to no good
Startin making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
She said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air'
It's the best rap song ever, let's discuss. |

03.04.10 | Sooooooo...
I whistled for a cab, and when it came near
The license plate said "fresh" and it had dice in the mirror
If anything I should say that this cab was rare
But I thought nah, forget it "Yo home to Bel-Air!"
I
Pulled
Up to a house around 7 or 8
I yelled to my cabbie "Yo holmes, smell ya later!"
Looked at my kingdom, I was finally there
To sit on my throne, as the Prince of Bel-Air |

03.04.10 | Emim, you should try learning about stuff before you talk about it. Hopefully one day you'll at least realize you should start reading or something.
We just had this discussion in my agriculture class about illegal workers. Basically, there is no way your life as you know it would even exist if it weren't for the illegals in California. You mentioned that there are plenty of unemployed citizens to do the jobs that illegals do, when actually, there aren't. As someone else said, a vast majority of Americans (even if unemployed and unable to find a job in these times) would not last more than a day doing the work illegals do. They work so much harder and are willing to do much harder work for longer periods of time than these Americans you are talking about. And of course with the way our economy is structured, without these jobs being filled you can kiss your fucking grocery store/going out to eat goodbye. |

04.07.10 | wow interesting thread.
theacademy: you need to stop simply regurgitating the musings of your economics teachers. there's a reason the education in our country has gone so far downhill: universities are more about postmodern philisophical indoctrination than actual absolute fact. time for you to think for yourself and use some common sense bro.
as for the immigration debate: theacademy's main argument seems to be that our country needs illegal immigrants, because they fill jobs that are unwanted by most americans, and thus our economy would be a disaster without these illegals. however, he seems to completely ignore one little detail: there is such a thing as LEGAL immigrants. and there are plenty of them, in fact, to fill the necessary low-paying, undesirable jobs that lots of illegals now fill. (and the number of legal immigrants would go up drastically if we toughened up our southern border, btw.)
sure, businesses like to hire illegals, cuz it's cheaper for them. but does that mean we should accept, condone, and even subsidize their greed and lawlessness? obviously not. that's just lazy and ignorant thinking. if businesses can't survive without hiring undocumented illegals below minimum wage, then they don't deserve to survive. that's the way capitalism works.
and the other thing is that a HUGE percentage of illegals are directly involved in crime, involved in drug trafficking, or just in general aren't productive members of society. it's not like they're all these hyper-motivated superworkers only wanting to be the best they can be. simply not true.
what we need to focus on are 3 things: securing the borders so that illigal immigration is cut WAY down, making the process of becoming a citizen, or at least a legal immigrant MUCH easier (so that legal immigration will increase that much more), and legalizing the illegals that are already here (albeit only the ones without long criminal records) and incorporating them into society.
THESE are the points that should be being discussed, not points like "we need illegals, our country would be screwed without 'em." well if that's true, why not open our borders wide and give everyone an open invitation? heck, why don't we start busing illegals over and start up the slave trade again? seemed to work fairly well a couple hundred years ago, amirite?
Jeez, some of you guys just don't think. |

#1: i agree completely, however i was only referring to a tiny facet of capitalism, not an entire global system. for instance: you've got 2 burger joints. joint 1 is higher quality, and it is outselling joint 2 so much that joint 2 has to start taking drastic measures, such as hiring illegal workers below minimum wage, just to stay afloat. that should not be allowed. in a proper capitalistic society, businesses should be allowed to fail. it's survival of the fittest: you either adapt, or you're extinguished. you don't start going around the law.
#2: you're right about the reaction to postmodernism. i was just referring to theacademy's seeming lack of common sense as an example of when you take what you hear in universities these days as absolute fact. i could write a whole separate post on what's wrong with postmodernism haha. |

04.08.10 | the problem with most of you guys here (and a large portion of the population btw) is that you think there is some form of government that would actually work well. fact is, there simply isn't. the reason being that all humans at heart are greedy, selfish, and egotistical. (prime example: this site)
you can sugarcoat it all you want and paste on a nice facade, but it's the truth. Socialism would work if we were perfect people, or maybe even just had one perfect person to put into power. but no one even comes close. as a result, exactly ZERO established socialist states have ever successfully endured in all of history. same goes for Capitalism. it's obviously the better option of the two, but it will never work exactly the way it's designed for the same reasons as Socialism: b/c people are greedy and selfish. and so there will always be problems with Capitalism as well.
and by the way, any talk of a perfect medium between Capitalism and Socialism is bullcrap. all governments boil down to one or the other. problems ALWAYS arise when you try a hybrid, or try to insert ideas from one philosophy and make them work in the other.
you have to just implement the lesser of two evils, and accept the fact that it will never work exactly the way it should. |

04.09.10 | Saving Private Ryan is an epic 1998 American war film set during the invasion of Normandy in World War II. It was directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Robert Rodat. The film is notable for the intensity of its opening 27 minutes, which depict the Omaha beachhead assault of June 6, 1944. Afterward, it follows Tom Hanks as Captain John H. Miller and several men (Tom Sizemore, Edward Burns, Barry Pepper, Vin Diesel, Giovanni Ribisi, Adam Goldberg and Jeremy Davies) as they search for a paratrooper (Matt Damon), who is the last surviving brother of three fallen servicemen.
Rodat first came up with the film's story in 1994 when he saw a monument dedicated to four brothers born to Agnes Allison of Port Carbon, PA, who died during the American Civil War. The monument was erected twenty-three years after Allison's first son was killed. Inspired by the story, Rodat decided to write a similar story set during World War II. The script was submitted to producer Mark Gordon, who then handed it to Hanks. It was finally given to Spielberg, who had previously demonstrated his interest in WWII themes with films such as Schindler's List, and decided to direct Saving Private Ryan after reading the film's script. The film's premise is very loosely based on the real-life case of the Niland brothers.
Saving Private Ryan was well received by audiences and garnered considerable critical acclaim, winning several awards for film, cast, and crew as well as earning significant returns at the box office. The film grossed US$481.8 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing domestic film of the year. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominated the film for eleven Academy Awards; Spielberg's direction won him a second Academy Award for Best Director. Saving Private Ryan was released on home video in May 1999, earning $44 million from sales.

04.09.10 | I never said that a social utopia will exist. Simply put, it's as close, I think, that humanity will ever get to one. A democracy by itself is needed so that those who did bad jobs will be removed. Democracy allows for trying new things. Well, we tried laissez-faire capitalism and it failed every time. Full blown socialism has also failed in other countries. However, the social democracies of Western Europe have been doing quite well, that is until the global capitalist system (mostly controlled by America) failed. |

assuming you live in the U.S...DUH. you just basically recited verbatim the way the founding fathers set up our government in the first place. its greedy, selfish people like you (and me) that have eroded it to where it is now, as was bound to happen from the start.
People need to quit thinking they're such political and social geniuses. A SOCIAL UTOPIA IS NOT A NEW IDEA. it's been tried before, and it's failed every time.

04.09.10 | So wait, I'm selfish because I believe that every human being has the right to a minimum, livable life?

04.09.10 | no you're not more selfish than anyone else, i was just making a broader point.
and btw, "a more perfect union" is EXACTLY what the founding fathers of the U.S. were aiming for when they set up America's government. so either you think you're smarter than them (which really WOULD make you more selfish than anyone else), or they really did set up a union as close to perfect as they could get. and yet it's STILL on a course for failure. what other reason could there be but that it was brought down by greedy people making it do more than it should have and selfish people manipulating it for themselves?
what i'm trying to say is: it's all been tried, and it's always failed. you're just going to have to face that reality. |

04.09.10 | Pizza: there's nothing wrong with trying to make it as good as we can by "fixing" as much as possible. we SHOULD be doing that.
I'm just saying: we're never going to get what we want, no matter how hard we try. we can get close, which is why we should try, but we're never going to reach and maintain the level we really want.
So in other words, there's no point in all the discussions on here saying "so, if we just did this and this and this and did it right, we'd have a perfect economy, and the world would run the way it should." as if no one's ever thought of those issues before, or tried to implement those ideas in the past. it's just an ignorant fantasy. |

04.10.10 | Leave It to Beaver is a 1950s and 1960s family-oriented American television situation comedy about an inquisitive but often naïve boy named Theodore "Beaver" Cleaver (portrayed by Jerry Mathers) and his adventures at home, in school, and around his suburban neighborhood. The show also starred Barbara Billingsley and Hugh Beaumont as Beaver's parents, June and Ward Cleaver. The show has attained an iconic status in the United States, with the Cleavers exemplifying the idealized suburban family of the mid-twentieth century.
One of the first primetime sitcom series written from a child's point-of-view, the show was created by the writers Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher. These veterans of radio and early television found inspiration for the show's characters, plots, and dialogue in the lives, experiences, and conversations of their own children. Like several television dramas and sitcoms of the late 1950s and early 1960s (Lassie and My Three Sons, for example), Leave It to Beaver is a glimpse at middle-class, white American boyhood. A typical episode features Beaver getting into some sort of trouble and facing his parents for reprimand and correction. However, neither parent is omniscient; indeed, the series often showed the parents debating their approach to child rearing, and some episodes are built around parental gaffes.

04.10.10 | The Constitution is the basis for the government, purposely made so that it can be amended and improved. As time progressed, the flaws were found and mostly solved. Examples include who could vote, slavery, term limits, etc. To say what the Founding Fathers was perfect is simply ignorant, as even they knew it wasn't. The very aspect of "a more perfect union" is to allow the American people to make the nation more perfect, not to say that it ever was before. The entire reason for learning history is to learn from the past. The past has taught us that progressives such as Teddy Roosevelt did the right thing by trust busting and regulating the economy, which was improved again by FDR. I could go on and on. |

04.10.10 | The capacity of human intelligence seems to limit the capabilities to expand upon any possible creative aptitudes. Indeed, if one cannot even notice the facets that the ingenuities around him are comprised of, how can he be expected to fashion a beast of his own? This inveterate sense of constraint is a great blow to the veracity of mankind’s abilities. It restrains us and holds our minds to the ground below, averting any possibility of rising above ourselves to something greater; something not fathomed by the conventional mind. This concept of seeking to go beyond one’s self, known as “transcendence”, is essentially a gateway to unlocking pieces of ourselves that can lead to some of the most elaborate and significant creations of our world. For many, this quest to transcend and form creations that were once considered unthinkable and overwhelming consumes life. Certainly it is rare to find such people, but when they are found, creative barriers are destroyed. |
