Battle Of The Bands [Semi-Final 1]

Semi-final 1. Opeth won the last one in a very close round. This is the first semi-final round, and these two rounds will probably be some of the closest and hardest for people to vote for just one band. Here we go... The rules: - Each round there will be three bands - The band who receives the most votes (via comments) moves on to the next round. - Each round lasts 24 hours. - Only one vote each round per member. - There were preliminary rounds, these are quarter-finals, and next are the semi-finals, and finally the finals - In the event of a tie, a faceoff will occur between the disputed albums. - The final two will be an EPIC SHOWDOWN! So, let's get started: NOTE: The 'average sputnik rating' I get by adding all of the bands album ratings together and averaging them out.
1Godspeed You! Black Emperor

ROUND 3 WINNER -- Latest album: Tiny Silver Hammers (EP) / Average Sputnik rating: 3.91 / Often praised as one of the greatest Post-Rock bands, Godspeed You! Black Emperor formed in Montreal, 1994. The band began with three members, but usually has nine, and has contained as many as 15. The group's unique and volatile sound is a mix of classical, avant-garde, and progressive, with most of their songs broken up into symphonic movements. Godspeed's music is all instrumental, save eerie spoken samples sometimes incorporated to enhance the dark mood, most noticeably on the album "f#a#?". The band is opposed to self-publicizing, with a lot of the members being anarchists, and most of their fan base is made by word-of-mouth. Godspeed You! Black Emperor went on an indefinite hiatus in 2003, and show no signs of reforming soon.
2Thrice

ROUND 5 WINNER -- Latest album: Beggars / Average Sputnik score: 3.76 /The California-based quartet, who?ve also been busy of late making high-profile main stage appearances at the Coachella, Reading & Leeds and Bamboozle festivals, have followed the New Pantheon Award-nominated Vheissu?s radical metamorphosis with The Alchemy Index, a four-volume collection spread between two releases comprised of four EPs, each devoted to one of the classical elements in nature?fire, water, earth and air?with each EP sonically and thematically tailored to evoke the atmosphere inherent in its corresponding element. This fall marks the release of the first two volumes of the series?Fire & Water?while Earth & Air are scheduled for a spring debut. For Thrice, it?s the realization of a year-long process of writing and recording, which was done primarily in the band?s own studio and engineered by guitarist Teppei Teranishi, without the assistance of an outside producer.
3Brand New

ROUND 7 WINNER -- Latest album: Daisy / Average Sputnik rating: 3.89 / Formed on Long Island, NY, Brand New appeared on the punk-pop scene in 2000. Consisting of drummer Brian Lane, vocalist/guitarist Jesse Lacey, bassist Garrett Tierney, and guitarist Vin Accardi, the band began making a name for itself on the local scene with a self-released four-song demo and shows with bands like Midtown and Glassjaw. In 2001, they issued their first record, Your Favorite Weapon, on Triple Crown, produced by friend ike Sapone. Lacey's clever and cutting lyrics sprinkled the album, which produced the semi-hit "Jude Law and a Semester Abroad," and more touring with Taking Back Sunday and Finch followed.
