LeotardMessiah 02.21.10	I think people usually recommend good albums. It's one of the good things about this site. One exception is people who ask for punk recs and are recommended lots of shitty pop-punk bands or bands that aren't punk at all.

eternium 02.22.10	Remember your musical journey. You didn't start with Linkin Park and end up listening to Circle Takes the Square the next day. And yeah, the Swedish death metal list was definitely specific, but that's blaming the user that asks for recs and not the veterans of Sputnik who give them.

Deviant. 02.22.10	No offense to the list maker but say for an example you make a list saying you want more Swedish DM then that's all you'll probably get rec'd. If you make a list and say rec me stuff that sounds like this it can easily be a different genre. I agree with what you're saying though, but at least be grateful people are taking the time to stuff, even if they get it wrong!

eternium 02.22.10	Oh, I am grateful, I don't usually ask for recs anyway, it's just what I observe through other lists. But when someone says that they listen to stuff like Thrice, don't recommend Neurosis, but rather something in between.

SeaAnemone 02.22.10	I do this for a reason. Personally, I know my musical development would've been different had people only rec.d me things in my comfort one. When I listened to The Strokes and Radiohead and RHCP and I got rec.d CTTS and GY!BE of course I didn't like them. Nevertheless, I was rec.d them over and over and I thought, "hey, there must be SOMEthing great about these if so many people whose taste I respect like them!" Sure enough, every once in a while I would come back and try listening to these albums that I honestly didn't enjoy. I was sure not to force it upon myself though. Little by little (most of the time) I found myself begin to first appreciate them, and then like them, and then fall in love with these albums I was rec.d so long ago. If they hadn't been in my face back when my favorite band was RHCP, I fear my taste would've remained stagnant instead of progressing. I still keep almost all the albums I've been rec.d in my itunes even if I really despise them and come back every once in a while. That's me, personally, and that's why I rec.d the new user things he probably won't like.
eternium 02.22.10	That does make sense, since the main reason I got into many of the bands that I am into was because of constantly seeing the praise for them. If anyone stays on Sputnik for a week, they'll know what albums are popular, but not necessarily what to listen to in preparation for those albums.
SeaAnemone 02.22.10	true, I just hold albums rec.d to me personally in higher esteem than random "moar opeth!" comments though. And I don't think TOO many of the ones I mentioned are all that highly visible round these parts, especially in a short time here.
eternium 02.22.10	Hail to the Thief is actually the most recent Radiohead album I've listened to, thus having finally listened to every one of them. I just need to listen to them more now.
