Opeth is still melodic and not just "DIE MOTHER FUCKER. I'll KILL YOU'RE PREGNANT WIFE AND DRINK HER AFTERBIRTH." I also have a really hard time liking other good metal. I can appreciate something like MoP but I don't really like it.

JWT155 02.21.10	I can agree with your sentiment, there's a reason why mostly guys are into metal. You said that Opeth was the only good metal though, I'd disagree with that. They might be the metal band you most identify with and appreciate but surely you've heard other bands you dislike but have talent.
couldwinarabbit 02.21.10	Well in general I find most metal bands get credit as being great musicians, while some are. But often it's simply because they play fast more then playing well. I think that the something simple like the rhythm guitar and drumming in the rolling stones shows a lot more talent then incredibly fast drumming and power guitar in death metal. Just because you can play fast doesn't mean it sounds good. I will say I haven't listened to nearly as much metal as any other genre but I have found Opeth to be the only metal band which plays so it sounds excellent.

JWT155 02.21.10	I personally love Metal because it's one of the few genre's where I believe the electric guitar truly shines; also I'm a sucker for catchy guitar riffs, hence In Flames being one of my favorite bands because the Jester Race, Whoracle and Colony have some of the catchiest guitar riffs I've ever heard.

eternium 02.21.10	Metal just sounds cool.. is there any other explanation needed? Other than bands who use the heaviness for atmosphere, especially post-metal. I love the sound of mass chaos (ex. Pig Destroyer) as much as heavenly goodness (ex. Sigur Ros).
