Battle Of The Bands [Quarter-Final 6]

Quarter-final 6. Pink Floyd won the last round in a blow out. This is the last quarter-final round, and then tomorrow the semi-finals will start! - The band who receives the most votes (via comments) moves on to the next round. - Each round lasts 24 hours. - Only one vote each round per member. - There were preliminary rounds, these are quarter-finals, and next are the semi-finals, and finally the finals - In the event of a tie, a faceoff will occur between the disputed albums. - The final two will be an EPIC SHOWDOWN! So, let's get started: NOTE: The 'average sputnik rating' I get by adding all of the bands album ratings together and averaging them out.
1Minus The Bear

ROUND 16 WINNER -- Latest album: Into The Mirror EP / Average Sputnik rating: 3.69 / A couple of nice young boys (formerly members of Kill Sadie and Sharks Keep Moving) from Seattle, making fantastic music, the likes of which there is a tremendous possibility you've never encountered before. Three full lengths, three EPs, and even a song on a compilation for breast cancer. This is what Minus the Bear has released since 2001. Matt Bayles (Keyboards/Production) announced his leaving of the band at the beginning of January, 2006. His last show was January 28th, 2006. He has been replaced by touring keyboardist Alex Rose. Minus the Bear recently announced a late 2009 tour and an album to be released in "early 2010".
2The Mars Volta

ROUND 17 WINNER -- Latest album: Octahedron / Average Sputnik rating: 3.72 / Formed in 2001 after the demise of the Post Hardcore whirlwind At The Drive-In by ex-members Cedric Bixler (vocals) and Omar Rodriguez (guitar), who then recruited Juan Alderete on bass, Ikey Owens on keyboard, and Jon Theodore on drums, as well as Jeremy Ward, who contributed sound effects. Whilst other ex-members of At The Drive-In continued on the path of the former band with Punk/Emo group Sparta, The Mars Volta expanded their sonic palette, often venturing into extended free jazz and psychedelic jamming throughout their songs.
3Opeth

ROUND 18 (WILD CARD ROUND) WINNER -- Round 5, 2nd Place - Latest album: Burden / Average Sputnik score: 3.65 / Ask any metal fan in the world and they'll tell you there's no band quite like Opeth. Since 1990, Opeth (Stockholm, Sweden) has been writing some of the most unique and extreme progressive metal ever created. With roots spanning from death metal to jazz and 70's progressive, Opeth is an extreme act like no other. Mikael Akerfeldt's voice shifts between the most soothing clean singing ever heard and the most menacing death metal growls this side of the threshold of hell. With him and Peter Lindgren making up the guitar arsenal, their riffs flow with atmosphere as well as a beautiful acoustic side and blues-influenced metal solos. The rhythm section is near perfect with Mendez and Axenrot providing the clean, subtle basslines and jazz/Latin-influenced drums. Despite the unusual influences for a band such as this, Opeth blends their distinct influences into an undeniably progressive metal sound.
