02.03.10 | I am only semi-serious, as the elitism i've seen associated with the term electronica is pretty lol but still, i've started to cringe at its use and I am constantly taking steps to avoid using it.

02.03.10 | Despite sarcasm I agree, and it's pretty lame that people from as varying of stuff like Burial to Boards of Canada to Autechre is all labeled under "electronica" in Sputnik |
PirateSquid
02.03.10 | Yeah I know what you mean.
It's just like with the term 'Indie'. It seems MTV just gives that to any band that isn't generic formulaic rock, which is uncool.
Indie ain't a genre, yo.

ehhhh, while Indie, Alternative, and Electronica aren't really genres, I can imagine 'Pop' being a genre, it basically describes any type of music that purely attempts to be purely 'poppy', which is just a music description, but yeah. |

02.03.10 | JXL has moments of Big Beat, but he also incorporates a lot of different genres into his sound. I still refuse to accept the idea that people call TCM Big Beat, unless you wanted to make a case for them being a very 'americanized' Big Beat group. Either they way they don't carry any of the traits of Big Beat |

02.03.10 | I always thought of electronica as more pertaining to House, Club, Trance and Big Beat -- stadium DJ oriented stuff, early 90s style.
but I agree, 'electronica' can be an annoying term, especially when people over-extend it's meaning. but, genre specifics are used basically to give people who *don't* listen to/know about the music a viable starting to point to go from when trying to understand what it sounds like without actually ever hearing it.
also Indie *is* a genre, Independent Music is not. |
PirateSquid
02.04.10 |
also Indie *is* a genre, Independent Music is not.
Which is why two bands that have totally different sounds and SHOULD be of different genres happen to be 'indie' because they're not as accessible as normal stuff.
Indie POP is a genre. Indie itself is not. |

Indie Pop would be a *sub*-genre of Indie Rock, or, for short -- Indie.

02.04.10 | Electronica or electronic music is fine. You do not need stupid specific genres just to make you're band feel self important. In the past 20 years, on average, electronic music has been the most consistent and best genre. It does not need super specific genres to look superior (cough metal) the music is good enough. |

Not really, if an artist is pop or rock I categorise them as pop or rock.
Adding indie as a genre prefix usually just seems to mean that in terms of sound something has poor/grainy/lo-fi production quality in comparison to something that doesn't, mostly because artists doing it independent don't have the money to do otherwise or it gives them indie cred or some shit.
idk what happened to indie just meaning music released and distributed through independent means, now it seems to be an umbrella term for any old raw, underdeveloped music that belongs to a myriad of genres these artists could easily slot under but hipster types are too lazy to bother with. |

Electronic music could probably give metal a run for it's money in terms of ridiculously anal genre and subgenre distinctions that can be made. |

02.04.10 | It's sad you don't like me yet I have such a superior taste/ knowledge of music compared to you, you have to focus on the fact I was unaware of a stupid petty genre name. Even though I have on multiple occasion stated how stupid sub-genres are...more than once on this list. You're entire argument is based on my lack of understanding of a subject which I think is juvenile and stupid. |

09.22.11 | If you struggle with electronic genres and distinguishing/defining them, first learn how to recognise the rhythm structure of a song.
Then with subgenres, just pay attention to the name of the subgenre, ie deep house is named that because it has a deep sound to it. |
