ninjuice
02.03.10 | It's nominated for technical awards, Best Director and Best Picture (which it probably won't win).
Calm down. |
TRMshadow
02.03.10 | Just saw it today too and I sorta' agree with you. Though the Special Effects are top notch (saw it in IMAX 3-D) the storyline is pretty sub-par) |
elephantREVOLUTION
02.03.10 | i didn't like avatar that much either. i almost fell asleep because nothing happened for the first 2 hours. |
Mr_Coffee
02.03.10 | If there's any justice, Inglourious Basterds should win. Or Up in the Air. But I know Avatar will do. Fucking James Cameron knows it, too. |

02.03.10 | ninjuice i bet you a 5 rating avatar wins best picture.
If it wins, you give Atreyu's "The Curse" a 5, if any other album wins, I'll throw down a 5 for an album of your choice. it's a sure thing. |

02.03.10 | if inglorious basterds or avatar wins best picture i'll prob kill someone.

As good as effects are, Give me a brilliant story any day.
Inglourious Basterds is easily in my top 3 movies. |
qwe3
02.03.10 | haha if inglorious basterds wins it'll be a sad day for cinema |
theacademy
02.03.10 | i think either avatar hurt locker or basterds winning would be good for cinema. all three have merits-
avatar - huge creative and financial risk undertaken by fox, passion projects have a tendency to wind up career killers (passion of the christ/apocalypto, waterworld/postman) but cameron stuck to his hopes and developed a lot of cool tech, perhaps at the expense of original storytelling but it was still servicable... im glad he is reaping the rewards. innovation is innovation, even if it doesn't come from where you'd expect.
hurt locker - mastery of direction and character depth, pretty much the polar opposite of avatar in terms of how much you learn about the human condition. also, war movies are hit or miss with critics and fans, and this walked the line perfectly.
inglorious - nothing is wrong with having a little fun, qwe. movie is typical tarantino -> take a genre of films that is profoundly influential -> add gratuitous violence and killer, killer dialogue. While not his best (i prefer tarantino in time-shift mode), it is still a solid entry and just so much fun...
BAD FOR CINEMA:
Up - these movies are not movies. Call me old fashioned, but I appreciate more than just a film's charm and plot. I like to read people. I like to evaluate sets. It's so much easier to write dialogue when you don't have to worry if actors can pull it off. What does a director even do in this situation, who is he directing? The animators? gimme a break. there's a reason a category for animated feature exists. please stop seeing these movies and voting members will stop stealing real films' best picture nods.
Up in the air - never was there ever a movie so pointless. here's what we should do. lets put george clooney in a movie, dress him up so the ladies liiiike, play some indie and throw together some montages. What is this film's message? Did he make the wrong lifestyle choice? then why is everybody else in his family so fucking miserable? Did he make the right choice? Then what lesson does the girl with no forehead learn in the end? movie is a sham. |

02.03.10 | avatar is one of the worst films i've ever seen |

02.03.10 | worst might be a bit strong, but it definitely sucked |

02.03.10 | no it was terrible, i haven't been so repulsed by a film in a long time
there isn't a single good thing i can say about it except that i got my money back |
robin
02.03.10 | thought it was okay. don't have an attention span, though. as long as district 9 doesnt win anything ever |

02.03.10 | i thought apocalypto was great, albeit a little long. |

02.03.10 | hurt locker ftw |
AmericnZero02
02.03.10 | Basterds sucked monkeyballs. That was two and a half hours of the most drawn out, meaningless dialogue I've ever witnessed. |

02.03.10 | I dozed off halfway through the movie and my friend woke me up about 5 minutes later |

renner and mackie are such genuine guys as well, sucks mackie didnt get a supporting nod (christoph waltz has it in the bag anyway) and i doubt renner will win lead actor but good for them |

02.03.10 | "The Departed was awesome."

02.03.10 | Yeah man, the departed was the shit. Didnt even know it was scorsese when i saw it, movie still fucking owned. |
Deviant.
02.03.10 | Oh, and Infernal Affairs>The Departed |
qwe3
02.03.10 | what made the departed awesome? relative to his other work it was merely good. i mean i would have probably been more impressed if it had not been an adaption |
Consigliere
02.03.10 | Fuck Avatar and James Cameron. He represents everything wrong with today's cinema and i'm pretty sure that Avatar is getting all these nomination is because it broke box office records, its all about good ol' $$$, if it flopped, it would've been just another big budget cgi heavy movie.
I'm supporting IB and Hurt Locker but any other movie winning with the exception of Avatar is fine with me.
On another note, academy, I strongly disagree that Apocalypto/POTC ( highest box office gross for an R rated movie btw ) are career killers for Mel cause the guy still can greenlight any movie his name is remotely attached to. |
Kiran
02.03.10 | speaking of mel, has anyone seen edge of darkness? |
Consigliere
02.03.10 | Not yet, it isnt in the theatre's over here.... he should direct more though, his movies are insane ( in an awesome way ). |
ReturnToRock
02.03.10 | It's not THAT bad. In fact, it's good, even though it's basically just LoTR in space. |
ReturnToRock
02.03.10 | For whoever dissed UP, that movie is the best animated movie I saw since Finding Nemo and The Lion King.
WALL-E can suck my fat one. |

"speaking of mel, has anyone seen edge of darkness?"
Nope. Nobody saw it here. Wonder why.
On another note, you gave not one reason why Cameron represents everything wrong with cinema.

@deviant, Qwe and departed fanboys
movie was a monumental disappointment compared to:
a. sco's earlier work
b. infernal affairs, infernal affairs 2, infernal affairs 3... |
FadeToBlack
02.03.10 | I really liked it, and not just for the effects which everyone seems to be fapping over |
Titan50
02.03.10 | Even without the effects, Avatar is a genuinely good movie, and not just the typical cgi-wankfest pople believe. It's not original, yes, but it's still got plenty of emotion going for it |
Phantom
02.03.10 | i am compelled to agree with this list's title. |
qwe3
02.03.10 | wasn't a monumental disappointment academy but yeah didnt think it deserved all the praise it got |
PirateSquid
02.03.10 | Up and Inglorious Basterds were the best movies of 09 |
thebhoy
02.03.10 | yeah departed wasn't that great. Avatar was so full of cliche that it didn't have room for emotion. And Hurt Locker was better than anything that came out in 2009 |
BigTuna
02.03.10 | hahahahahahahaha everyone here is as conceited about movies as music. |
Nikkolae
02.03.10 | actually i dont think anybody has praised this movie for anything other than the effects cos the story is rubbish |
Titan50
02.03.10 | But yeah, despite not seeing Inglourious Bastards, Up or Where The Wild Things Are, Hurt Locker's my favourite film of 09 |
CrisStyles
02.03.10 | The Departed is overrated as hell |
imnotthere420
02.05.10 | academy, how can you hate on up man? the montage at the beginning is one of the saddest and effective animated scenes ive ever seen ha. great movie. |
KILL
02.05.10 | wtf it was good |
MindTrain
02.06.10 | If you think Avatar was a well-written story then you've never seen/read a good story. It was a CGI showoff and bored the fuck out of me. |
TMobotron
02.23.10 | I'm not saying the departed was the greatest movie of all time, but I thought it was really good. What do you guys think should have won that year? Sure as hell not Babel. |
joshuatree
02.23.10 | hurt lockerrrrrrrrrrr
Also it was nice to see a serious man nominated even though it has no chance in hell, best of 09 behind Hurt Locker and Where the Wild Things Are (which omission was expected but still sucked)
Agree with that one guy that Up in the Air was a sham, and can't believe that other guy that didn't like Inglorious Basterds. Like how. |
EVedder27
02.23.10 | saw it in 3D and will never again. The visuals were the only thing great about it. |
