| An Attempt To Justify My Preference For Female Vocalists
A seem to have developed an affinity for female vocalists, maybe even harboring on a preference (some might say obsession...). There are a few female singers that consistently blow me away. Following is a list of some of these women and examples of their performances | 1 | Karin Dreijer Andersson
Karin is a Swedish musician originally from the alternative rock band Honey Is Cool, she went on to form the more well known group The Knife with her brother Olof Dreijer. Last year she released a solo album under the name Fever Ray. Her voice is distinctive and unconventional, which contributes to its appeal.

Shara began releasing music independently with her solo project AwRY which later became the better known My Brightest Diamond. She was part of Sufjan Stevens touring band and more recently contributed to the Decemberists album "The Hazards of Love" as the Queen. Her voice has a classical sound to it, which is appropriate since she studied opera in college.

I really like Bjork. Her first album was released when she was only 12 when a radio representative heard her and recorded her for a show. Between that and her more well known solo releases, she was in a myriad of bands such as Tappi Tikarrass, KUKL, and the Sugarcubes. She also released an album with the jazz group Trio Gudmundar Ingolfssonar entitled Gling-Glo. She has an incredibly distinctive voice, often using shrieks and howls between lyrics.

The rookie of the list, Annie Clark wasn't on the music scene until joining the Polyphonic Spree in 2004. She toured with them and was featured on their album "The Fragile Army" before leaving and joining Sufjan Stevens touring band. She released her debut solo album "Marry Me" under the name St. Vincent in 2007. While her voice may not be as distinctive as the previous singers, it is nevertheless excellent and addicting.
St. Vincent - Apocalypse Song

Best known for her work in the band Portishead, Beth Gibbons provides beautiful and haunting vocals that cause meld perfectly with the electronic and more recently, abrasive quality of the music of Portishead.
Portishead - Wandering Star

Last but certainly not least is Australian singer Sia. She is known for her work with Zero 7 and her solo albums. She is most definitely a pop singer, but escapes the trap of relying on simple melodies and repetitive songs.
