My Fav Metal Albums Of 2009
1Baroness
Blue Record

My current favorite band really knocked me off my feet with this album. The sonic scenes that Baroness places a listener into can only be done by a few select metal acts. I can't wait for their next effort, Yellow Chronicle?
2Kylesa
Static Tensions

Quite a diverse range of sounds for a sludge band. The mood of each song is different, yet there is somehow a nice flow from each one to the next.
3 Be'lakor
Stone's Reach

I had never heard of these guys before someone mentioned them on /mu/. It was late in the night and I almost didn't listen to it before going to bed. What ensued at three in the morning was the most ball destroying, kick ass first album listen through I have ever heard.
4Between the Buried and Me
The Great Misdirect

To be honest, this album was "meh" to me at first. After getting so worked up for the latest album leak I have ever known, I went to bed disappointed. Obviously, I came around to it later.
5Russian Circles
Geneva

This is an example of a newly released album that got me into a band's older work that I had only been slightly familiar with. Russian Circles now has a special place in my current favorite bands list. My only gripe is that their show for my area was scheduled during exam week making me unable to attend.
6Wolves in the Throne Room
Black Cascade

2009 was a great year for the black metal sub genre. WitTR is but one of a handful of bands that changed my perception of what can be done with this form of metal. Black Cascade is a step forward for the often looked down upon sub genre.
7The Faceless
Planetary Duality

I listened to this album before I was going to see these guys open for BTBAM. I must have had at least 10 runthroughs prior to the show. The skill and technical mastery of their play is jaw dropping to say the least. The Faceless make it brutal.
8Nile
Those Whom the Gods Detest

I was skeptical about a new Nile release. Firing this album up for the first time was a "fuck yeah" experience, however. THERE IS NO GOD THERE IS NO GOD THERE IS NO GOD THERE IS NO GOD
9Isis
Wavering Radiant

Isis is one of the bands I am dying to see live. They are touring Europe with Baroness in 2010, which I am uber jealous about. Wavering Radiant brings what is to be expected, but it was also exactly what every Isis fan wanted.
10Mastodon
Crack the Skye

Obligatory 2009 best of year album. I pushed it down to #10 because I believe there were just better, more original albums in 2009 besides CtS. It really was a great album, but I just wished Mastodon tried as hard as Baroness, AKA the new kings of Sludge.
