01.13.10 | From what I've been told, rap is money, cars and women. Hip Hop has more mature themes. |
Inveigh
01.13.10 | Mr. Epic: depends on who you talk to, because people have different opinions on it. I've always been of the school of thought that lyrical content makes them different. Rap is technically a sub-genre of hip-hop; with lyrics that revolve more around gangs, violence, money, extravagance and street life. Hip-hop (while not necessarily avoiding those subjects) is concerned more with urban culture, personal conflict and often is more socially/politically conscious.
Of course, an emcee or group can be both (like Wu-Tang Clan or Nas).
To me, examples of rap would be:
2pac
Bone, Thugz 'N Harmony
Obie Trice
Dr. Dre
Notorious B.I.G.
stuff like that. Hip-hop would be:
KRS-One
Atmosphere
Brand Nubian
De La Soul
Gang Starr
P.O.S./Doomtree
Aesop Rock
Sole and the Skyrider Band
A Tribe Called Quest
does that make sense? |

01.14.10 | ninjuice you completely misinterpreted what I was saying. Iai said that saying rap and hip hop are different is like saying hybrids aren't cars. I said that saying rap and hip hop are different is like saying deathcore and deathmetal are different.
and I don't think I'm elite, that's pretty laughable. I even said that I like both rap and hip hop. I also stated in my first comment that people have different OPINIONS on this and that was mine. Anyways, I'm not sure who all you guys are that think you're the absolute source on what rap and hip hop are, but I've been involved in the Chicago hip hop scene for 5 years and if you said this kind of stuff to any emcee, DJ or producer that I know you would be laughed at. They'd probably also laugh at you for liking Gucci Maine. |
JulesWin
01.14.10 | "I even said that I like both rap and hip hop"
yeah cuz it's the SAME thing!
who's Gucci Maine btw? |
Inveigh
01.14.10 | Gucci Maine is a terrible rapper that illmitch likes haha.
Also, to me, they're NOT the same thing which is why I said that. I was responding to someone who said that people who only "like hip hop" are doing that because they're too elitist to say they like rap -- I say I like both so I can't see how that makes sense, I mean maybe for some people, but those people would just be idiots.
Saying that hip hop and rap are the same thing is a pretty naive comment to make (no offense). Are all you people from the suburbs or some shit? How does this not make sense to you? |
illmitch
01.14.10 | gucci mane is a dope southern rapper
except since he prefers finding inventive ways to describe the color of his jewelry, clothing, cars, and drugs instead of rapping about black liberation or whatever people on here dont like him |
Inveigh
01.14.10 | http://vodpod.com/watch/1282055-gucci-mane-punches-a-girl-in-the-face-on-video
lol, that gets me every time. I don't personally like rap like Guccie Mane, but he's probably one of the better in the style -- I was just fucking with you illmitch bc I know you like him.
also lol at chan's comment. And no, most of the hip hop I like isn't about black liberation haha, but I do dig some Mos Def and Common from time to time. |
illmitch
01.14.10 | i see hip hop as the umbrella genre.
stuff like atmosphere, POS, mos def i would describe as "conscious rap" or "alternative rap".
on the other end you have gangsta rap, which could be the early-90s stuff like Kool G Rap or early Wu-Tang, or it could be southern stuff like Gucci Mane.
alternative rap often shares sonic similarities with east coast gangsta rap - they both tend to be based around samples and often emphasize traditional lyricism.
southern rap tends to emphasize the producer composing original music and sometimes de-emphasizes the "storytelling" aspect of rap, instead geared toward punchlines and wordplay. |
Inveigh
01.14.10 | after re-reading my comments, I should probably make this a little more clear. In my opinion, it's like hip hop and rap can sometimes be used interchangeably but not all the time. Usually in the form that you can always say hip hop is rap but you can't always say rap is hip hop..
For intance, you would never call an emcee/group "gangster hip hop" or "club hip hop" -- that would be a little ridiculous. But you could interchange indie hip hop for indie rap. To me, UGK would be underground rap, whereas Atmosphere would be underground hip hop. I mean, they sound so drastically different that it would be weird to say they were the same genre, right? |
JulesWin
01.14.10 | @Inveigh
dude, you are the epitome of elite, assuming people like Gucci Mane and flashing your credentials:
"I've been involved in the Chicago hip hop scene for 5 years and if you said this kind of stuff to any emcee, DJ or producer that I know you would be laughed at"
|
Inveigh
01.14.10 | I typed my last comment before reading yours illmitch, but I basically agree with everything you said there. Like, to me, you could call Wu-Tang gangster rap or you could just call them hip hop. I agree that hip hop is mostly the umbrella term, but there are instances when one term (rap or hip hop) is vastly more accurate then the other. |
Inveigh
01.14.10 | lol at JulesWin, you don't even know me don't pretend like you do. I don't even know what "assuming people like Gucci Mane" means. Was there supposed to be more to that? And did you read all of my comments or just that one? I'm pretty sure I gave props to Gucci Mane... |
JulesWin
01.14.10 | you said "They'd probably also laugh at you for liking Gucci Maine"
like you're so much better than someone who likes him, that's what I meant
"if you said this kind of stuff to any emcee, DJ or producer that I know you would be laughed at"
listen to yourself, oh! the people that YOU know.
gimme a break! |
MetalFaceDoom
01.14.10 | lulz damn sputnik nerds ruined my list with all this e-fightin who really cares if rap is different or the same then hip hop. its all good music my brahs |
JulesWin
01.14.10 | @ MetalFaceDoom
It's just that certain people(Inveigh) come in here acting like they know so much and are so much better than everyonee else |
Inveigh
01.14.10 | dude, really? if you knew me at all, you would know I don't think I'm better than anyone. If you read my comments, you would know that I only said that about Gucci to mess with illmitch, because he's always reppin' him.
And to be fair, my original comment wasn't a shot at anybody, I was just responding to SlightlyEpic's question and clearly stated that it was MY opinion and that others may have different thoughts on it. However, then comments like this started:
"rap and hip hop are the same thing if you think otherwise youre a moron"
"people who think they're "elite" say they only like hip hop"
"exactly, it's jsut a distinction that people who think they're elite make"
so, actually it was YOU who came on here and acted like you knew more than anyone else and had the only correct opinion. I was just responding to your ignorant comments.
Just thought I'd point that out. |
kitsch
01.14.10 | hahahahahahahahahahaha u are an idiot on 11 wtf thats not the album

01.14.10 | rap and hip hop are essentially the same fucking thing.
rap is the style of vocal delivery found in basically all hip hop |
JulesWin
01.14.10 | @ Inveigh
I'm not gonna attack you for your opinions, just that the way you present them makes them sound like facts more than opinions.
I couldn't give a fuck about your "involvement" in the Chicago hip hop scene or the emcees/djs/producers that YOU know |
erasedcitizen
01.14.10 | When people say hip-hop is dead, at least the smart ones, they're talking about the culture that rap music was a part of. Hip-hop is gone, there is no reason to use it in a sentence anymore. |
Inveigh
01.14.10 | "depends on who you talk to, because people have different opinions on it. I've always been of the school of thought that lyrical content makes them different."
^what I said.
"rap=hip hop people who think they're "elite" say they only like hip hop it's jsut a distinction that people who think they're elite make"
^what you said before I said anything else. I'm pretty sure that counts as attacking someone's opinion. I'll admit that my involvement with music has no relevance to this discussion, and I probably could've gotten my point across in a better way -- I was a little too influenced by the amount of blatant arrogance already on the thread.
But saying that only elitists think hip hop is different than rap is presenting your opinion like it is absolute fact -- which doesn't really make you look too smart. Again, you're right, I shouldn't have brought up anything that I've done with music before because it didn't have anything to do with this, but you're the one presenting your opinions like they're facts and attacking others for theirs. |
JulesWin
01.14.10 | you bringing up you're music involvement is what I didn't understand and this is the perfect example of "blatant arrogance":
" if you said this kind of stuff to any emcee, DJ or producer that I know you would be laughed at. They'd probably also laugh at you for liking Gucci Maine"
who are these people? are they some kind of authority on music? just present your opinion and don't imply that it's right because people that you know agree with you. |
NigelH
01.14.10 | Soulja Boy off in a ho. Wa me crank and wa me ro. |
Inveigh
01.14.10 | dude, I admitted you were right about that and that it doesn't matter what actual hip hop musicians think about this issue in regards to its accuracy. You're still ignoring the majority of what I just said. You're telling me to present my opinion, which I did in my first comment; to which your rebuttal was "only elitists think hip hop and rap are the same."
Why not present your opinion with some reasoning behind it rather than just say that's what "elitists" think. You act like I attacked your opinion first! At least I told you WHY I thought hip hop and rap were different and didn't start out by just saying "only suburban kids think hip hop and rap are the same." |
JulesWin
01.14.10 | ok you seem like a nice enough dude so let's just agree to disagree my quote was:
"people who think they're "elite" say they only like hip hop"
wasn't specifically referring to you even though I did quote you in that same comment. you seemed very arrogant in that comment that I already mentioned, you admitted it was irrelevant so lets leave it at that cool?

02.28.10 | Whoa wait. I read most of these comments (wish I hadn't). The only defining of either rap or hip-hop was to say hip-hop was an umbrella term and then the different genres of rap were defined. No. That doesn't differentiate at all.
I honestly am interested in what the difference is.
Can someone just define what they think hip-hop is, define what they think rap is, and explain where they are different? |
WooHa
02.28.10 | Rap is a part of hip hop. Hip hop is consisted of rap, djing, graffiti and breakdance. |
