01.05.10 | I was watching MuchMusic (Canadian music channel) and they were interviewing Timbaland and they said how people thought he was a musical genius... I mean, he's a good produced but I'm pretty sure people have lost the meaning of musical genius. I would maybe include 4 on my list, that's about it, and that's a big maybe. Richard D. James does great stuff but idk I try to refrain from calling electronica/producers musical genius'. 1 is great but hardly a musical genius. |
supertouchox2
01.05.10 | agree with 2 and 3.
but the lack of frank zappa is annoying. |
Powerban
01.05.10 | You forgot Fred Durst. Damn that guy can solo on his guitar and sing and play drums. |

klap
01.05.10 | 1 definitely deserves to be on there, his studio efforts (XO and on) show a whole dimension of songwriting ability that his lo-fi stuff never even hinted at |

01.06.10 | Yes to 3 and 4. Is Mike Patton really a genius? I never thought of him like that. |
gaber01
01.06.10 | Patton has like a whole laundry list of bands that he plays with, spanning many different genres. I think he qualifies as a musical genius. |

Toby Driver
Devin Townsend
Mike Patton
Agree with 4 though... |
gaber01
01.06.10 | Lets see, Ian MacKaye practically conjured from thin air the genre of post-hardcore, destroyed what it meant to be an underground band, was in one of the starting emo bands, in an industrial band, in one of the defining hardcore punk bands, and wrote great guitar parts/lyrics. Sure he was not a virtuoso but there's more to being a musical genius than just playing really fast. Ian MacKaye demonstrated a wide range and reinvented whatever genre he put his mind to, as well as producing several well known artists via his record label. |
supertouchox2
01.06.10 | so he started a sub genre? wrote some ok riffs and some really good lyrics, im sorry but thats not what i expect to see on the cv of a musical genius. |
gaber01
01.06.10 | Correction, he started two subgenres. That means that he created a form of music that wasn't there before. Countless classic bands would not exist if it weren't for him. I'm sorry, but just because someone doesn't have extreme technical prowess that doesn't mean they're not a genius. |
supertouchox2
01.06.10 | he didnt make music that wasnt there, he just gave it a name and made it popular. you could say mc5 sound like post hardcore. and they were before "punk" itself.
what are these 2 genres by the way, post hardcore i accept, i hope your not saying he also started hardcore aha. |
Benjomatico
01.06.10 | Downward spiral definitley justifies him being a genious (Reznor) whatever he did afterwards doesn't really matter |
FadeToBlack
01.06.10 | chuck schuldiner |
Benjomatico
01.06.10 | Dont forget that this is a list of 5 musical geniuses, not of THE 5 musical geniuses |
gaber01
01.06.10 | He also was one of the first Emo bands (Embrace). He may have hated the term, but his sound had a huge influence on the SoCal emo scene. |
supertouchox2
01.06.10 | fair enough, see at this point the genres just blend into one and your not left with much to distinguish anything by.
in this area of music lyrically ive always though CIV was superior although granted ian was amazing to. |
gaber01
01.07.10 | I dunno, maybe you've just gotten too jaded for the -core scene. I know that happened to me too. |
Trebor.
08.16.12 | Townsend admitted he doesn't know shit about music which makes him even more of a musical genius
