| $100 In Gift Cards At Hmv For Christmas
The grand total was $143 (HMV isn't the best music
store in the world but hey). Not bad considering
one
of them, an $18 Kings of Leon DVD, is going to be
a
birthday present for my sister. Anyway, here's
what
I bought: | | 1 | | Eagles of Death Metal Peace, Love, and Death Metal
They were the openers of Rock Werchter 2009 and were really good live. This was
the first CD of theirs I've found so I bought it. | | 2 | | Phoenix Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
I've already heard it (I'm a naughty file-sharer) but I often like to buy CDs I
really like. I suppose it's sort of like a collection but I also like having
the stuff that comes with the CD like pictures, lyrics or whatever. Wicked
album by the way. Probably top 10 of '09 if I ever make a list. | | 3 | | Rise Against This Is Noise: Canadian Tour EP
5 song Ep for $6 from one of my favourite bands. I figured it was worth it
seeing as I've heard none of the tracks so far. | | 4 | | String Quartet Tribute The String Quartet Tribute to Coldplay: Volume 2
What??? you say? Exactly. I lurve me some Coldplay and I'm always down for
some (hopefully) well done interpretations of some of their songs. It intrigues
me that it says 'volume 02' on the cover... | | 5 | | Metric Fantasies
It made the staff's top 50 list for 2009 and the one song I've heard from this
band sounds kind of like a Vancouver band I really like called Mother Mother so
I thought, why not. | | 6 | | Matthew Good Band Vancouver
I've been meaning to hear this for a while, I heard it was really good. Also, I
live in Vancouver and I liked how there's maps of different parts of vancouver
on the sleeve design. | | 7 | | The Flaming Lips Embryonic
Like the Phoenix album, I've heard this album and love it. I really like the
front cover and that's a big selling point in me buying a CD or record
(incidentelly, HMV was out of Merriwhether Post Pavilion...) | | 8 | | Yeah Yeah Yeahs It's Blitz!
Again, great cover. Really good album, not amazing (a 3.5 I'd say) but it's got
a cool dancey vibe to it that I think would be fun to throw on at parties or
something (what are CDs for anyway?) Also, I have a soft spot for this band
after seeing them at Rock Werchter and then learning their song Maps (from Fever
to Tell, only $8 but I elected to go with this one instead) as one of my fist
songs on drums | | 9 | | Kings of Leon Live at the O2 London, England
A present for my sister's birthday on February 15th (I'm thinking ahead this
year and not leaving things until the last minute). She saw them live in
Vancouver and I've seen them live in Belgium. So I'm hoping she'll let me
watch. | |

01.03.10 | The cover for It's Blitz just will not show. Lame, especially consdierng it's awesomeness is one of the reasons I bought the CD. | theacademy
01.03.10 | i seriously don't get people buying CD's i know its a huge deal on this site but wtf dont you all have computers + libraries? If you're going to spend cash on a physical volume of something, why not a film, video game, or book... some medium that isnt SEAMLESSLY INTEGRATED INTO OUR COMPUTERS AND PDAs...
im just sayin...
in other news love 2, 5
7, 8 were both stinkers from good bands
1 is overrated but not so bad
6, 9 suck
havent heard 3
you spent money on 4??? WTF | theacademy
01.03.10 | i just read that 9 is for ure sister so thats forgivable. | Titan50
01.03.10 | I got Horehound by The Dead Weather, Crooked Rain Crooked Rain, Merriweather and Violent Femmes' s/t
As well as The Machinist, Shawshank, Starter for 10 and Cloverfield | JWT155
01.03.10 | You bought music... haha thats funny... | Phil
01.03.10 | I buy 95% of the music I listen to. I like that Metric album, I should listen to it more though. Good choices from the others that I have heard. | Aids
01.03.10 | To the people that have a hard time understanding why I sometimes buy music instead of downloading it, I have the following to say:
I am in no way someone who disagrees with illegal filesharing. I do it often if fact about 60-70% of my 30+GB library comes from torrents. However, I believe in sometimes supporting a band's hard work if I think they deserve it (and not every band that I listen to deserves everybody buying their CD). Now, HMV is not the best place to support artists, the bands themselves receive far less than by other means (buying at shows or local record stores) but I got gift cards at HMV for Christmas so HMV it was.
I love music and listen to a lot of it. While I can't be financially expected to pay for all of it, I like to buy music every now and then too. Also, like I said, I also enjoy having the physical copy sometimes as I have a largeish CD and Vinyl collection. Plus, having the MP3 is great, but buying the CD allows you to have it on more formats. I listen to music in the car and in CD players sometimes and have grown tired of buring entire albums.
Too each their own, of course, but I think it's ridiculuous that someone who loves music as much as someone on this site would, would not understand why I might want to spend actualy money on music. It's just like collecting DVDs or stamps or whatever to me. Not everything is bought for 100% practical use you know. | JWT155
01.03.10 | I understand your reasoning, I just choose to support my artists differently. I spent over $600 on concerts last year, band tees, DVD's ect. When I do purchase music, it will always be a physical copy, I just economically prefer the idea of owning a physical onject worth money that I can choose to sell for in the future if I wish to. | Aids
01.03.10 | And now I guess I'll comment on the music comments:
I agree that 2 is good, haven't heard 5 so far.
7 and 8 were both good albums (excellent in The Flaming Lips' case) by bands that have made better music.
It's too bad you think 1 is overrated, I hope you're wrong.
I can't imagine either 6 or 9 sucking but again, we'll see.
Yes I spent money on 4. Coldplay are one of my favourite bands and the idea intrigued me. Show some repspect for a band that's respectable at the very least. | theacademy
01.03.10 | those string quartet things are cash grabs, and coldplay uses enough f*cking strings in their studio releases that I was just taken aback about why anyone would pay for a string tribute.
also, the illegal/legal, supporting/stealing purchase/download is not the point i intended to bring up. I meant that I don't understand why CD's and Vinyls are not completely f*cking obsolete yet. Why would you go into HMV and buy a 4 song EP for 6 bucks when you could get the same 5 song EP for 5 bucks (at the very least) on amazon/itunes.
If you got an HMV gift certificate, and you wanted to spend it on music because you don't like anything else they have in the store, that's fine. I just don't get it 100%, maybe because I like movies and books and video games, maybe because once I upload a CD, the physical piece of property becomes worthless, etc.
I was not mocking you for paying for your music, more for paying for the dead technology that's built into the cost of your music. | JWT155
01.03.10 | @theacademy - CD's and Vinyls aren't obsolete yet because people like having a physical object that's worth money, if you study micro economic my Professor at college spent a whole day on stuff like that and how technology has made many things obsolete but they're not do to the fact when you buy things on iTunes, you own nothing of value, where as anEP that was $6 can be bought, burned and resold for per say $3, the purchaser comes out on top still. | theacademy
01.03.10 | no, this point I understand (theoretically). I do not understand it (practically). especially when one can just as easily burn the very same CD ad infinitum. | JWT155
01.03.10 | Agreed, and I can inturn also say that torrenting is easier, more efficient and cheaper then iTunes. :D | Dreamsoffew
01.03.10 | This might sound slightly silly, but I actually enjoy having the booklet/lyrics etc, just the whole package. While I have downloaded the vast majority of my music I always try and buy my absolute favorites.
Academy: You mentioned earlier on this thread that if you're gonna spend money on a physical copy of something you should spend it on (amongst other things) a movie?
You could just download and burn that too though. | JWT155
01.03.10 | @Dreams - Your slighty wrong on inferring the same argument for movies and music. Music is only listened too and once it's on your CPU, it can be very easily transferred into a different format whether an MP3 player or a CD. A movie on the other hand is ussually watched on your tv which is probably the most efficient and best way to watch it. To transfer your movie from a CPU to a DVD is harder (I can't burn DVD's on my lap top) and you could use an HDMI cable but that would mean cables and things get a little crazy. | Dreamsoffew
01.03.10 | That's true, I can burn movies on my laptop so for me there's no hassle. | theacademy
01.03.10 | we are heading in that direction, yes, but we're not quite there yet. There are subtle differences to the way people watch movies and listen to music. For example, many people find that watching a film on a tiny ipod or laptop screen is undesirable. Perhaps its because its not how movies were intended (by the filmmakers) to be experienced, or perhaps it just hurts your eyes. Regardless, there are two senses involved in watching a film...people don't do it on the go as much, people (generally) can't multi-task with movies. Music files are way smaller, so inevitably when younger people build libraries their computers can handle many more songs and albums than they can full-length films. Finally, downloading music has had a vast head start on movies and film and audiobooks etc. CD's, despite being playable in just about any device are less valuable than DVD's (playable in fewer devices) which are less valuable than blu rays (playable in even fewer devices). It's because of the way consumer technology has integrated digital music.
Don't get me wrong, movies are heading there. Hell, Blu Ray is not going to be what DVD and VHS was before it, and my library may become obsolete soon enough. But not just yet. | theacademy
01.03.10 | also, CD jewel cases break mad f'n easily SO ANNOYING. | Dreamsoffew
01.03.10 | I agree with that too. But I mean if you've got the time, space and means to do so....
I wasn't disagreeing with you either, just putting my usual 2 cents in. | theacademy
01.03.10 | im not trying to beat up on this kid or people who buy CD's. I'm just saying I don't see the point.
I spend money on way more frivolous sh*t... | Masochist
01.03.10 | I just having at least a physical copy of some albums. iPods and Zunes break; harddrives crash; c.d.'s get stolen...all without warning. It's good to have at least a few of them already backed up (because I'm not burning every single album I own simply for the sake of back-up).
Also...c.d.'s are useful for instant music sharing. If someone is riding in my car (where I have c.d. player without an aux input), and hears music they're interested in, I'm not going to give them my entire Zune overnight just to listen to it. I will, however, let them borrow a c.d.
It's all just preference, really, though. If you see no need for c.d.'s, you don't need to buy 'em. I do...so I do. | theacademy
01.03.10 | yeah most cars (and therefore most drivers) aren't mp3 integrated... for people who don't regularly drive, we do a lot of 'here take my usb jump drive, I copied "Mean Everything to Nothing" for ya' or 'i just got tha new Opeth vs. Britney Spears mash-up ill bring my laptop over later, brah' | Phil
01.03.10 | I second Masochist's statement. | Aids
01.03.10 | I think I've fallen behind on the discussion but in response to theacademy: you could make the same argument for other forms of entertainment besides just music. Is buying DVDs or Blu Rays really necessary when theoretically you could the movie online and rip it to a DVD or whatever or just watch it on the computer (however you like your movies)?
Even books are beginning to become available for free online in text files. And don't forget about libraries.
There are plenty of ways to avoid paying for the types of things you want to watch/listen to/whatever but sometimes, we all like to spend money on it, if only every once in a while. | Aids
01.03.10 | I also believe that bands should focus on making their money through performances and merch sales at shows which is why I always go see a band that I like if they come reasonably close to where I am at the time. | theacademy
01.03.10 | ^not my point. read it again. or ignore it. but that's not a response. | Aids
01.04.10 | Whatever our separate long-winded arguments are, I'll quote you once (what I feel to be 'your point' as you said) and leave it at that.
"im not trying to beat up on this kid or people who buy CD's. I'm just saying I don't see the point." That's fine if you don't see the point for yourself. There are plenty of things that I personally spend no money on if I can avoid it. But for you to suggest that it's pointless for anyone to want to spend money on CDs (or what have you) seems misguided. I guess that was my beef with what you said.
Thanks for the discussion but I wasn't really looking to get into a battle about whether spending money on music is a good idea. I wanted to discuss the music that I decided to buy with a Christmas gift. We did that a little bit thought, so that's good. | Aids
01.04.10 | T0 change the subject or maybe improve the list (not to mention, bump haha): does anybody happen to know why the album cover for It's Blitz won't show? It's really bugging me, I know I've got it spelled correctly. | Phil
01.04.10 | It's got an exclamation mark. They and apostrophes don't work for some reason. | Aids
01.21.10 | ^Thanks, you'd think someone working for the site could easily fix that, no? |
