Greatest Metallica Songs

Metallica is a love 'em or hate 'em band, especially on this site. I'm a bit more neutral, seeing as I love them one day and hate them the next. These ten songs are the best I think they have to offer, not just the stuff that most people like.
1Fade To Black

My favorite song of all-time. I can't stop listening to this song, and it has holds a lot of meaning for me, which probably makes me pretty baised. But the band really deliver on this one, James actually sounds good, and Kirk absolutely rips it up at the end. Greatness...
2Dyer's Eve

From half-acoustic power ballad to in your face, heavy fuckin' metal. James is just plain angry in this one, in his vocals and his playing. Lars actually sounds pretty good behind the kit, and Mr. Hammet explodes with a face-melting solo that is quite difficult to immitate. Anger always makes music better.
3The Four horsemen

Most people are probably thinking, "wtf? something from kill 'em all number 3?" but I think that this song is easily the best off the album, and one of the band's best. The galloping riff is great, and Cliff plays some cool stuff. The solos are very good, but Kirk relies a little too heavily on the pentatonic scale on KEA.
4For Whom The Bell Tolls

I'm so happy that Metallica decided not to put a solo on this one. At first, it bugged me, but when my band covered it, we realized there was no place for a solo to fit, really. Everything else is top-notch, Lars gets some fills in, James vocal melodies are catchy, and the intro is a force to be reckoned with.
5Nothing Else Matters

Simply put, a beautiful song. James sings quite well, suprisingly, and the acoustic melody is haunting. Not much can be said for the drums or bass, but Kirk's solo, while not technical or long, is one of the most emotional I've ever heard.
6Master Of Puppets

Yeah, I waited until slot number six to add a track from the legendary Master Of Puppets album. Personally, I prefer RTL, AJFA, and even KEA to it, as strange as that is. This song, however, is killer. The riffs (especially the one after the solo) really drive the song, and James solos!
7Welcome Home (Sanatarium)

The number four song ballad off of MOP, it's also a great song. The solos are the best part, but everybody really contributes to this one. The lyrics (kill, it's such a friendly word) are good by Metallica standards, I like the idea of singing about being institutionalized.
8Fuel

Oh no, the dreaded ReLoad! Hey, at least it's not St. Anger. This song doesn't really have a whole lot for me to comment about. It's just a helluva lotta fun, and even more so live.
9Sabbra Cadabra

I love Sabbath's original version, but Metallica's is better. You can tell James had a lot of fun singing this one, and the band really shines in this more relaxed-feeling rocker. Except when it switches to A National Acrobat, which isn't as good, but still a high point of the Garage, Inc. album.
10Sad But True

I know a lot of people don't like this song, but I could never figure out why. It's definitely not thrash, but it's still a great song. The lyrics are very good, as are the vocal melodies. Kirk's solos are good, if a bit short. Overall, a very solid offering.
