12.28.09 | help a brutha out with some new music purchases. (note: I've already purchased 1 and 3 on this list -- the deals were just too good to pass up while waiting on responses, I spent less than $5 on each INCLUDING shipping!)
P.S. album artwork on the first try! only a 5 album list, but still... |
FeralMemories
12.28.09 | 5 is best by far. |
Inveigh
12.28.09 | ^word? it's the only Dillinger I don't have... well, except the one before it I guess. I love everything else they've done, I suppose I need to get it. |
BallsToTheWall
12.28.09 | I don't know, 3 is pretty awesome.
Needs moar Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid. |
SteelErectedb4you8er
12.28.09 | Good albums. I would the movies 1-3 maybe. Definitely 3. As far as the albums, that's a tough call, but I would say either No Heroes or Functioning on Impatience. |
Inveigh
12.28.09 | is that on Blu-Ray yet? haha, but you're right, no movie collection is complete without it. The problem is, I have over 100 standard DVDs and I can't bring myself to go out and pay $25 for a Blu-Ray of a movie I already own.. |
Phantom
12.28.09 | Batmn Forever/Batman & Robin |
Relinquished
12.28.09 | 5 is the best obv. |
Inveigh
12.28.09 | SteelErected: I probably should've been more clear -- these are the movies I already have, but more recs are welcome (if there's anything that looks particularly awesome on blu-ray). Hmmm... 2 and 4 you say? I went with the other albums by each of those bands, haha, but I have some more moola to spend. I'll probaby end up getting all of these eventually |
Inveigh
12.28.09 | Phantom you serious? I own the first Batman (Tim Burton, not Adam West) and Dark Knight on DVD, I was thinking Batman Returns for blu-ray.. Forever's pretty good, but B&R was just awful.. |
SteelErectedb4you8er
12.28.09 | Well then, Transformers 2! No, just kidding, don't help out Michael Bay. I don't know what else that would make a good blu ray purchase. |
BallsToTheWall
12.28.09 | Are we talking about BC and SD? I also forgot to mention Braveheart is worth purchasing as many times needed. |
Phrike
12.28.09 | You need Avatar 3D... oh wait |
Inveigh
12.28.09 | oooh, Braveheart is one that I don't own in any format -- but I should. Yes, Balls, I was referring to BD and SD when I asked about it being on Blu-Ray. It's a classic for sure.
Steel: yeah, I'm entertained by Michael Bay, but I don't enjoy supporting him.
oh damn, I know! I gotsta get me some more Michael Mann! Collateral, Heat, fuck, what else is there? |
klap
12.28.09 | bro, since you put public enemies, you should check your local wal-mart to see if they have this sick deal i recently picked up from there:
a box set of Scarface, Carlito's Way, Casino, American Gangster, and Public Enemies, all together for $40. that's sick, it was awesome, you'll love it |
klap
12.28.09 | just realized you're asking for blu-ray; regardless, still a good deal for dvd |
Emim
12.28.09 | Actually, I'm pretty sure Transformers 2 would look rather amazing on blu-ray, but NO Batman and Robin. Just hit yourself in the head with a hammer, same effect.
As for albums, I would say 1 or 5 personally. |
EVedder27
12.28.09 | holy shit all those for $40?! |
klap
12.28.09 | yes, only at wal-mart tho; i saw the same set at borders for like 60 |
BallsToTheWall
12.28.09 | If South park has taught us anything, it's that Walmart is the devil and old people will kill you with their cars. |
EVedder27
12.28.09 | hope its the same at walmarts here cause I am so on that |
Phantom
12.28.09 | Ha, no. I'm not serious.
This isnt really a blu ray must, but it is a must see movie imo - The Machinist.
If you've seen in then....................I don't know. |
Inveigh
12.28.09 | damn klap that IS a deal! then I could gift the Public Enemies to someone eventually (since I already got the blu-ray)... I'm interested to see how it "converts DVD to HD-DVD"..
Phantom: The Machinist is amazing, can't believe I didn't think of that one. Thanks dude!
Balls: is this the country kitchen buffet? |
klap
12.28.09 | whoa your thing converts DVDs to HD? |
cirq
12.28.09 | porno |
Inveigh
12.28.09 | klap: yep, all blu-ray players that I've seen claim to be able to convert standard DVDs to HD-DVD quality. I haven't tried it out yet, but that's what the manuel says.
cirq: duh. |
klap
12.28.09 | wow i did know that, i might actually invest in one. if that's true, why would anyone buy an expensive blu-ray movie when they can buy the cheaper dvd and convert it? let me know if it works that'd be awesome |
KieranVandRakim
12.28.09 | 5 |
Inveigh
12.28.09 | well, HD-DVD isn't nearly the quality of blu-ray -- hence why HD-DVDs weren't around for very long after blu-ray came out. I've had HDTV for awhile now (ESPN in HD is stunning) and blu-ray looks even better. It hurts my eyes it's so crystal clear. I'll let ya know how it turns out -- perhaps I'll pop in A Very Sunny Christmas for the third time tonight and see how it looks haha. |
thecheatisnotdead
12.28.09 | 1, 2, and 4 are excellent. As far as movies go, I don't know if this ended, but Best Buy had a box set of Mean Streets, Goodfellas, The Aviators, and The Departed for like $25. Also, can't go wrong with Donnie Darko, Brick, Gone Baby Gone, The Big Lebowski, Children of Men, City of God, Requiem for a Dream, Road to Perdition, Narc, and Adaptation.
::gasps for air:: |
thecheatisnotdead
12.28.09 | ^Aviator*
Also, forgot to mention Memento. And A Mighty Wind. |
cirq
12.28.09 | Cool Hand Luke, Eternal Sunshine, Blood Diamond, Kill Bill, Scarface, City of God, Dont Be A Menace, The Departed, American Psycho, Pineapple Express |
theacademy
12.29.09 | i am a blu ray enthusiast. i have found the following releases entirely necessary for the elevated/exclusive/hd content:
1. sunshine
2. watchmen: the ultimate cut
3. 300 (the version that comes in a book, not the standard blu ray release)
4. The fountain
of the above, only the watchmen collection is particularly expensive (4 discs + digital copy). as for other movies, it is really unnecessary to get movies that arent effects-heavy on blu ray unless its cheaper to do so. for instance, donnie darko is a retarded rec, because it is intentionally shot in a grainy, darkness...but for me, it was 2 dollars cheaper on blu ray and included the directors cut... |
Inveigh
12.29.09 | Hah, between cheat and cirq you guys mentioned most of my favorite movies (i.e. Goodfellas, The Departed, Donnie Darko, Big Lebowski, Children of Men, Requiem for a Dream, Narc, Eternal Sunshine, Blood Diamond, American Psycho and Pineapple Express) but I've got those on regular DVD.
Kill Bill, Gone Baby Gone, City of God, Mean Streats and Brick are now on my list though for sure. Thanks guys. |
cirq
12.29.09 | oh and green street hooligans! |
theacademy
12.29.09 | supplemental blu rays i own that are also stunning: firefly, i am legend, fight club anniversary edition (if only for the new commentary tracks and hilarious menu) |
renegadestrings
12.29.09 | everyone is going to tell you to get 5, but be warned, its hard to get into. all the other DEP albums clicked for me after a couple of listens and i love em still... but Calculating Infinity is still a bit of a conundrum |
Prophet178
12.29.09 | If you like NIN the Beside You In Time Blu-ray is ill, especially if you have a receiver capable of Dolby 5.1HD or DTS Master. I think Opeth's Roudhouse Tapes is coming out on Blu-Ray soon too, I fucking hope so.
5 is probably the best album here, next would be 2. |
Inveigh
12.29.09 | cirq: green street hooligans rules.
theacademy: firefly...remind me again what that movie is? all I can think of is that stupid Kevin Costner movie Dragonfly... Nice call on Fight Club, I lost my old copy of that.
renegadestrings: I just amazon'd Calculating Infinity, and I knew going into it that it would be less accessible than their other stuff. I'm not sure if I'll be able to get into it or not, but I'm gonna try -- although super mathcore is sometimes too much for me.
Prophet: I'm not really into NIN, but I love me some Opeth. I didn't even think of music blu-rays, thanks for reminding me those exist! |
Deviant.
12.29.09 | My blu ray collection is a little sparse given the price of them (plus I really can't be bothered swapping all my dvd's for Blu Ray), but my collection is:
Zodiac (Director's Cut)
Black Hawk Down
Hellboy 1+2
Dracula (Francis Ford Copolla version)
Batman Begins
The Dark Knight
Full Metal Jacket
As for Calculating Infinity, depends on the person. First couple of tracks I didn't think too much of it, but after about halfway through I was hooked |
theacademy
12.29.09 | hold up zodiac directors cut was released on blu ray? i was bitching to my friend the other day about wanting to buy that and unrated live free or die hard...i gotta step up my game |
Deviant.
12.29.09 | Yeah man, not a great deal added to the movie itself minus a few scenes here and there, plus a pretty cool blackout montage. Special features is freakin' extensive though. So The Fountain is good on Blu Ray? I heard Aronofsky wasn't thrilled with the dvd version. It's pretty dark in a lot of places. |
shindip
12.29.09 | Hot Fuzz |
theacademy
12.29.09 | movie looks gorgeous, worth the purchase if you liked it. i held off on zodiac dvd originally b.c of the lack of a commentary track. certain directors u just NEED the commentary track |
Deviant.
12.29.09 | Fincher has his own seperate track which is needed, you're right. You should be able to find it pretty easy, I just picked it up from the shop. I'll have to amazon The Fountain, haven't seen it on Blu Ray anywhere in NZ. |
Inveigh
12.29.09 | ah, if only I didn't already own Hot Fuzz on DVD..
Good call on Full Metal Jacket and Zodiac Deviant/academy.. I've never seen The Fountain -- although I didn't hear good things.. You guys liked it? |
Deviant.
12.30.09 | Dude, the movies awesome. It's fucked up, but it's awesome. I remember reading somewhere that critics hated it, but fans of the director loved it. Definitely worth a look. |
