| Top Ten Metal Albums 2009
2009 was a great year to be a metalhead. As the decade drew to a close it was - perhaps fittingly - a year of remarkable comebacks, seeing some of the most important bands of the last 20+ years releasing their strongest material in ages. Here's to hoping that 2009 has been a rebirth for some of these bands, who will now be refreshed and primed to carry the metal banner into the 2010's. | 1 | | Megadeth Endgame
A stellar return to form for the once-toted "state of the art speed metal band". A model of eye-bulging consistency and heavy metal clout, Mustaine and co demonstrate how modern metal should be done on this incredible album. Killer riffs, mind blowing solos, pissed off attitude and massive hooks make this THE metal album of 2009. | 2 | | Devildriver Pray for Villains
One of the hardest working bands in metal have spent the last seven years trying to prove themselves and shed the ghosts of Dez Fafara's past. On Pray for Villains, we hear the sound ofthe band hitting their stride at last, presenting a delectable melting pot of the group's collective songwriting and instrumental talents. Hooky without compromising on pulverising brutality, this is DD's essential release. | 3 | | Behemoth Evangelion
The Polish masters of blackened death return with their magnum opus, an earth-shattering realisation of vocalist Nergal's conviction and vision. On this album, he bellows from the bottom of his lungs like a demented preacher on a mountaintop (or street corner) over the top of some of the most crushing death metal thunder you're likely to hear this year. | 4 | | Lamb of God Wrath
One of the tightest live acts on the circuit, Lamb of God serve up riff after finger-twisting riff to delight (and frustrate!) any aspiring metal guitarist. Randy's Blythe's vocals are better than ever, the brutal cherry on top of an album that is surely the soundtrack to smashing down your house with a hammer. Or your neighbour's. | 5 | | Rammstein Liebe ist fur alle da
Don't be fooled by lead single "Pussy" - this is a remarkably musically accomplished album which simply begs for repeated listens. You'll be yakking along in German in no time at all. | 6 | | Slayer World Painted Blood
F**cking slaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyeeeuurrghhhhh!!! Nah, but this album will kill your goldfish and rape your sister. If you didn't like 'em before, it's not going to change your mind, but for the rest of us - turn it up really f**king loud and enjoy the timeless matching of Tom Araya's rapid syllable vocals and King/Hanneman's neck snapping riffs. | 7 | | Immortal All Shall Fall
Proving just how they have remained consistently popular alongside their second-wave contemporaries, Immortal return with an album that positively sprays from your speakers and envelopes you in the freezing rain and darkness of Norway. Features Abbath's signature riffs so awesome and unique that you have to rewind mid-song to listen to them again. | 8 | | Heaven and Hell The Devil You Know
These very, very old men prove their salt (as if they needed to...) by creating one of the heaviest albums of the year. A doom masterpiece, it combines guitarist Tony Iommi's life-affirming riffs with those golden pipes of one of metal's great voices, Ronnie James Dio. You know you want it. Worship at the altar of metal, mortal. | 9 | | Alice in Chains Black Gives Way to Blue
The very definition of a grower. Each listen yields further secrets as these ingeniously crafted songs worm their way into your subconscious. More than a fitting tribute to Layne Staley, this is AIC's rebirth. | 10 | | Dream Theater Black Clouds and Silver Linings
Their strongest work since the seminal "Scenes from a memory" album. Improved songwriting means this 75-minute opus never drags, and opener 'A Nightmare to Remember' is sixteen minutes of absolute prog-metal bliss, featuring moments of utmost brutality amongst refrains of sheer beauty. | |

12.23.09 | touche my friend | FailureToAspirate
12.23.09 | Yeah, I know the list is fairly mainstream as far as metal goes, but a good album is a good album! I certainly do not pretend that these are the 'best' albums of the year, as I have not heard every album released this year. They are simply the ones I have enjoyed the most. They are all CONSISTENT albums, which for me is the most important thing. | robertsona
12.23.09 | hahhaha guys | Wizard
12.23.09 | kevcore, having a joke account and telling someone they have shit taste in music doesn't quite add up.
FailureToAspirate, I enjoy the fact that this pretty much covers all the best mainstream metal. Your honesty to being naive within the genre is also a win. Not alot of people admit to this and instead, try to kiss the asses of the more seasoned fans. Nice to know we still have some good users left on the site. If I could pos' this list, I would. | Deviant.
12.23.09 | There's actually a lot of good albums on here tbh | Poet

12.23.09 | My problem with the album is that they write songs hahahahaha I know, I know and I enjoy their more techy work of past efforts. | BallsToTheWall
12.23.09 | Pussy rules. | Poet

12.23.09 | 1 and 9. Rest sucks. | Jesuslaves
12.23.09 | List is good, don't listen to the fags who think that a band automatically sucks if more than 10 people have heard of them. | Jesuslaves
12.23.09 | Ok, Rammstein really sucks. But Megadeth, Slayer and LoG are good, and the last three are all decent. | Romulus
12.23.09 | 9 is very good.

12.23.09 | phail | LepreCon
12.23.09 | Good to see a 'top metal' list that actually contains metal for once | Mordecai.
12.23.09 | list is lol bad | Mordecai.
12.23.09 | and Jesuslaves, you are an idiot, Rammstein is the best thing on here. | Metalstyles
12.23.09 | decent list man, sure it's a bit "mainstream", but it's still pretty good. More than half of sputnik's community is pretty far up their asses, so comments like "Phail" are regular, but don't pay attention to them much. 2 is great for sure and will prolly make my top 10 too. 6 is okay, 8 I need to listen again but it was definitely great too. 1 and 3 have been sitting in my PC for a long time now, but haven't listened to them yet. Don't like LoG much, and I've kind of grown tired of Rammstein overall, so I just skipped their new album. | Deviant.
12.23.09 | "More than half of sputnik's community is pretty far up their asses,"
Quote of the day | TRMshadow
12.23.09 | Pretty mainstream as metalstyles said, but not bad. Only thing I'd changed was get rid of freaking slayer. | Metalstyles
12.23.09 | yeah Slayer really wasn't anything special, ok for 1 to 2 run-throughs, but other than that, rather forgettable | Greggers
12.23.09 | 1 and 9 are amazing
2, 3, and 8 are great
10 is good
Haven't heard the rest, not a bad list overall.
