Thor
12.18.09 | Half of this list isn't metalcore at all. |
Thor
12.18.09 | And the half that is metalcore shouldn't be on here. |
Inveigh
12.18.09 | Yeah, 5, 7 and 8 definitely aren't metalcore and 3's debatable. They're all new wave of american heavy metal though, so I get why they're all on the same list (if you had asked me back in 2004 I probably would have considered Shadows Fall and LoG metalcore). There's definitely at least been a phase in my life where I really liked every album on this list and a lot of it I still do.
This is the kind of metalcore I was still pretty into when I first came to this site. I was hesitant to open up at first, but if you do this place will give you lots of great metalcore (in my case Botch, Converge and Coalesce). Maybe give some of these a shot:
Converge - Axe to Fall
Coalesce - Ox
Botch - We Are the Romans
Poison the Well - You Come Before You
Every Time I Die - Gutter Phenomenon
Welcome to the site man. |
taskeen1989
12.18.09 | Dude, haven't you heard of misery signals? |
Inveigh
12.18.09 | ^ah, the man speaks the truth; I forgot about them. Controller or Of Malice and the Magnum heart are their best IMO. You could also go with some 7 Angels 7 Plagues... |
jrowa001
12.18.09 | 1 is the only good ABR album. 2 is horrible. 7,8 are kinda bad. 3 is LoG's last decent album. 4,5,10 are great though. 6 and 8 are ok. def get the albums that Inveigh suggested |

Inveigh
12.18.09 | Deviant's probably right, it be a better idea to work your way into Converge or Botch. His recs are good, no need to add any (but still check out Poison the Well!!!) |

Deviant.
12.18.09 | Okay, you're excused. Pretty pointless post though, no offense. |
Deviant.
12.18.09 | I agree, you're absolutely right. It just annoys me when someone hops in, claims someone's music taste is shit and/or they've gotten it wrong and doesn't bother to help/rec them. |
Mordecai.
12.18.09 | lol'ing hard at this list |

SteelErectedb4you8er
12.18.09 | You guys are forgetting about Will Haven. Will Haven is the shit! |
djanus69
12.18.09 | Metalcore shows the ignorance of this generation. Same recycled riffs, same recycled songs, and same recycled bands. |
BigTuna
12.18.09 | cool story bro |
SlightlyEpic
12.18.09 | thank you for your valuable input I'm sure he's really taking your ignorance to heart right now. newsflash you guys all metalcore sucks it all sounds the same don't bother it's not like there could possibly be a single good metalcore band amidst the generic ones nope not at all, it's all recycled yep definitely |
SteelErectedb4you8er
12.18.09 | Depending on what bands you are taking about. you can really say that about most genres of music once it becomes popular. Music is about what sounds good to you. And if someone wants to hear the same stuff, whatever. Most bands mentioned in comments are actually quite good. |
GenNarain
12.18.09 | Mastodon? wtf? |
djanus69
12.18.09 | I've hear most bands on this list. None of them have an original thought. As I Lay Dying makes the same album each and every time, just with different names. Parkway Drive copies off of every other band. All That Remains wishes they were Lamb of God or Unearth(which isn't necessarily a good thing), Killswitch doesn't know that their music is irrelevant, and every August Burns Red song sounds just like the one before it. Only two respectable bands on here are Mastodon and The Dillinger Escape Plan, and none of the two albums on this list are considered the better part of their catalogues. |
SlightlyEpic
12.18.09 | Oh yeah, this list is entirely derivative and for the most part very shitty. I was just under the impression you were badmouthing the metalcore genre as a whole. |
BigTuna
12.18.09 | you have no original thought |
djanus69
12.18.09 | I am, actually, I was just using this list as an example. The last great metalcore bands were Botch and Converge. All these other mediocre metalcore bands out their today are only trying to replicate what those two have already done. Metal is such a watered down genre now, and it's getting worse due to the popularity of metalcore. |
intothepit83
12.18.09 | ^ needs to get laid |
SteelErectedb4you8er
12.18.09 | Well, Coalesce and Poison the Well are good as well. Misery Signals is pretty good too.
I wouldn't call Knut or Buried Inside metalcore, but they are good. |
SlightlyEpic
12.18.09 | I'll agree with you on that to a certain extent, but there are still some gems out there amidst the sea of mediocrity. |
djanus69
12.18.09 | If you've noticed though, SlightlyEpic, these so-called "gems" come out of the gates strong, impressing the masses and the critics. Sooner or later, though, this band begins to disappoint it's fan base. It's a common occurence in metalcore, especially. The lack of any and all real heart in the music is quite disappointing. The last time I heard a metalcore band do something that was original and new was Poison the Well-Versions. I know it embodies all of what I just said; however, the band incorporated some sounds no one heard before. The critics loved it, while their fans called "Blasphemy!" I find that utterly ridiculous |
SteelErectedb4you8er
12.18.09 | However, Tropic Rot, they perfected the new direction they were going in on Versions. That was a transitional album. It wasn't fully developed yet. I mean, they started changing with YBCY. |
djanus69
12.18.09 | I believe you are right to a certain extent, Steel. However, The Tropic Rot is almost a return to form for Poison the Well, and the fact that so many of the band's fans panned "Versions" as another band "selling out" shows me the ignorance of metalcore fans, here on the site and around the world. I remember seeing Poison the Well when they first came out with "The Opposite of December" and the passion the crowd had for them. Fast forward 7 years. I saw them perform right after "Versions" was released and these same people were booing them. I find that sad and a perfect example of a metalcore fan. |
Lobotomie
12.18.09 | Dude of course the list sucks, the kid is probably new to this kind of music which is perfectly normal. You can't get into Converge and even less DEP right off the bat, it's a gradual thing.
With the increasing popularity of heavy music in the last few years, you inevitably get a huge wave of shitty similar sounding bands from across the world wanting their piece of the pie. That doesn't mean metalcore or even metal as a whole genre is watered down and irrelevant. Far from it.
And what's the better part of Mastodon's catalogue if Leviathan isn't it? |
djanus69
12.18.09 | "Leviathan" is a great album, I just believe that "Blood Mountain" was Mastodon's best and most ambitious yet. It had elements their previous albums didn't have.
Metalcore is a dying brand of music. While bands like Converge and Coalesce continue to do their own thing, most metalcore bands are using re-hashed ideas to come up with their music and lyrical content. Hardcore is the same way. Metal is the same way. The whole genre is becoming a parody of itself. |
SteelErectedb4you8er
12.18.09 | Tropic Rot doesn't sound like old Poison the Well at all. It sounds like they listened to a lot of Cave In and wanted move on from the metalcore title. And I do agree that most metalcore fans these days are more of scenesters, but that doesn't mean that everyone and every band is like that. Can't let that discourage you. |
Lobotomie
12.18.09 | Ok well to that extent we could include the whole North American culture, if you think about it. |
djanus69
12.18.09 | What do you mean by that, Lobotomie? I don't understand exactly what you are trying to say. |
Inveigh
12.18.09 | I started reading some of the comments ont his list and thought, "oh god, here we go, someone's gonna call someone a faggot and this once-normal list is going to turn into a shit fest" -- but you guys are having a very intelligent and productive discussion! Nice!
Metalcore's gotten really stale, with just a few bands still doing anything relevant or just abandoning the genre altogether (Mastodon for instance, bc I thought Remission was Converge-y or Dillinger-y enough to be considered almost metalcore); but this happens with every genre eventually (especially in punk, metal and hardcore). Think about thrash. By like 1991-1992 was anyone doing anything even slightly original anymore (other than selling out)? Fuck no, and there about 10,000 thrash bands coming out every week. We only remember the best 8-10 thrash bands as being classic, and all the others are more nostalgic. It will eventually get that way with metalcore too.
In maybe 10-15 years, people will think of Converge, Botch, Poison the Well, Dillinger, Misery Signals and probably even Killswitch and Unearth (maybe LoG) as being classic bands (albeit the last three will be regarded probably like 90s Metallica in a way). There's still some bands out there making enjoyable metalcore, but outside of Cave In, Coalesce, Poison the Well and (maybe) Converge, no one's doing anything original anymore. |
djanus69
12.18.09 | Thank you Inveigh. Much appreciated. It seems to be difficult to have an intelligent conversation on here. I'm not trying to tell anyone they are wrong for listening to whatever type of music they want, considering that taste is subjective, in music and everything else. However, I am just expressing what I personally see within the genre of metal, and more precisely, metalcore. |
SteelErectedb4you8er
12.18.09 | Yeah, I am just trying to have a discussion. There's no need to take this out of control. |
LG
12.18.09 | Omg there is like so many other better metalcore albums and I'm not talking about the big three either. ABR and ATR FTW |
FeralMemories
12.18.09 | Why don't we just consider the "good metalcore" bands like Coalesce and Converge "Mathcore" and all the other ones like Parkway Drive and August Burns Red "Metalcore". It makes it a whole lot easier. And even if they're not doing anything original, it still is sometimes enjoyable music. |
GBJ
12.18.09 | DJ if you don't like metalcore, fine, but making generalizations you're making yourself look like an idiot. Metalcore isn't "dying", and it's not all recycled riffs despite how cliche and hip it is to assume so.
You just haven't dug deep enough through the Parkway Drives and Devil Wears Pradas to find all the Converges, Cave Ins and Architects.
All I'm saying is don't judge a perfectly good genre of music by all the rip-offs and let downs (which, I agree, make up a lot of the genre). I'm sure there are still new metalcore bands out there that even you will like |
djanus69
12.18.09 | How can you not judge the genre the way I do when even you say that the rip-offs and let-downs make up a lot of it? I believe that gives me every right to say the genre is watered-down. That's all I'm saying. The good metalcore bands have come and gone, with a few stragglers still making good music, but when 99% of the genre is terrible, that genre is dying. |
WhiteTieBlackJacket
12.18.09 | Controller is overrated. Not a fan of the vocals. |
ckypro3
12.18.09 | 1, 4 and 8 are good. i never thought of Mastodon as metalcore. |
GBJ
12.18.09 | because rip offs and let downs are in every genre, that's just music, and it's also just life. |
