Into The Winter...
My first list. This is just a list of my top albums as we enter the winter months following a cold autumn. Great for long and/or frostbitten walks, screaming along to at the water cooler or assorted grim blasphemous activities involving werewolf style orgies. Most of these are from 2009. |
1 | | Woods Of Ypres Woods IV: The Green Album
Amazing album by a band local to me. Very simple and seemingly rock oriented while still staying true to their black / doom sound. |
2 | | Swallow the Sun New Moon
Great Death/Doom band. Takes a few listens to get used to but it's very diverse and moving. |
3 | | Insomnium Across the Dark
Argueably my favorite album of 2009 and latter years for that matter. If The Harrowing Years was replaced with The New Beginning (Bonus Track) it would have been an 100% album. |
4 | | Katatonia Night Is The New Day
Fantastic Album. It's a new step towards a more interesting Katatonia than we've seen in the past few years. Probably the best I've seen since Discouraged Ones. |
5 | | Paradise Lost Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us
Great Album again. Towards the end it gets a little dry but the first few tracks makeup for the rest. |
6 | | Wolves In The Throne Room Black Cascade
The power behind Black Cascade is incredible, I'm still amazed by ever track everytime I hear them. |
7 | | Cobalt Gin
Great Black Metal album. These guys are relatively unknown however they are truly doing something innovative and new. Everything from the guitar and drum tones to the songs in general are something unlike everything else. Check it out if you haven't. |
8 | | Skagos Ast
Probably one of my top 5 albums of all time. For those of you that have never heard of them, which is probably everyone who reads this - check them out if you're a fan of Black Metal. It's unique, atmospheric and incredible. I'm still amazed by it's flawless blend of beautiful folk passages, drone interludes and rage evoking black metal in a eco-terrorism kind of way. |
9 | | Moonsorrow V: Havitetty
Moonsorrow never ceases to amaze me. This is the only album on this list that isn't from 2009 I think, but that's for a reason. It's timeless, and between the two tracks present it covers more ground then the entire discography of most bands. |
10 | | Sunn O))) Monoliths and Dimensions
Amazing, probably the first drone band I've ever been able to throw myself into. Great album - experimental yet heavy, a new melodic touch and chilling vocals make this album incredible for the coming winter months. |
