Best Albums Of 2009

I think it's late enough in the year that I can actually put this up.
1The Mars Volta
Octahedron

This album seems to be a nice distillation of what makes The Mars Volta
great while taking away some of the more extraneous elements. The lyrics
still make no sense, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
2Mastodon
Crack the Skye

This album seems like a natural evolution for Mastodon. It's a really epic
album that doesn't really sound too overdone. I really cannot wait to see
where this new direction takes them.
3Baroness
Blue Record

This is the album that really got me on the Baroness bandwagon.
4The Mountain Goats
The Life of the World to Come

I think this recaptures some of the minimalist glory of John Darnielle's
earlier work.
5Omar Rodriguez-Lopez
Xenophanes

This is the first of Rodriguez-Lopez's solo albums that really sounds like an
extension to his work in ATDI and The Mars Volta. Plus, he's actually a
pretty good vocalist.
6Tom Waits
Glitter and Doom Live

I have to admit, I have a bit of a bias towards this album because this is
the tour I saw Tom Waits on. It really captures how awesome his live show
was.
7Andrew Jackson Jihad
Can't Maintain
8Mono
Hymn to The Immortal Wind

There really isn't much for me to say about this. It simply sounds beautiful.
Very epic and yet serene.
9Zu
Carboniferous

This album came pretty much out of the blue for me. It's very esoteric and
one of the best examples of modern, atmospheric avant-garde jazz. Plus,
Mike Patton!
10Kylesa
Static Tensions

Fun little sludge album.
11Dethklok
The Dethalbum II

For being a joke band, Brendon Small has actually put together a hell of a
metal album.
12Dirty Projectors
Bitte Orca
13Animal Collective
Merriweather Post Pavilion
14RX Bandits
Mandala
15Secret Chiefs 3
Traditionalists

This album perfectly captures the art of Italian horror film score.
16Isis
Wavering Radiant
17Converge
Axe To Fall

I think this album fizzles out towards the end, but when it's good, it kicks
insane amounts of ass.
