Feels like a lifetime, but that's how long I've been getting my music kicks from sputnik. Here's to many more, and here's the most important albums of my first year round here. | | 1 | | August Burns Red Constellations
Metal, eek. Mid-2008, my metallic experience stretched as far as trying some generic/boring technical stuff and hating it. I never said metal was bad, but I knew I was unable to get into it and then one day this year something compelled me to check out Constellations. It's clearly not the best metalcore record ever released, let alone the best metal, but I fucking adore it, and it's been the starting point to a lot of other things. | | 2 | | God Is An Astronaut All Is Violent, All Is Bright
Post-rock didn't exist before sputnikmusic; I knew the name Sigur Ros but they were some freakish Icelandic band I didn't give a damn about. Now 3 of my 5s are in the instrumental genre and it makes up probably a quarter of what I actively listen to. Fragile is one of the best things ever recorded. | | 3 | | fun. Aim And Ignite
Be honest; you knew it was coming. My second year at university was such absolute shit that when this record came along and made me HAPPY I was astounded. It's still just as good as it was when I first heard it; it's still the album of the year and it was one of the easiest things EVER to review. | | 4 | | Taylor Swift Fearless
Among branching out and learning where your tastes can lead, there's also something to be said for learning to appreciate what's good about what you already listen to. This could have been all manner of things, especially since I actually found Fearless through this website, and a lot of the pop-punk I used to listen to could take this spot; the place most people would call guilty pleasures but that I'll call things I'm glad I still love. | | 5 | | Bon Iver For Emma, Forever Ago
Until For Emma clicked I was the type to throw away albums; Bon Iver's debut LP is the reason why last night I revisited The Hazards Of Love, The Earth Sings Mi Fa Mi and The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion. It's not so much a case of things growing as a case of things needing certain factors to be in place to work. | | 6 | | Death Cab For Cutie Transatlanticism
The album that brought me here, the album that brought me to music in general, and the album I still hold closest out of pretty much anything I own. A 5 from the second I laid ears on it. | |
