| R18+ Rating For Games (aus)
Some friends and i were discussing the necessity for an R18+ rating for video games in australia, currently there is no such rating, thus resulting in banning or censoring of video games. are video games just the exploitation films of the 21st century?

11.04.09 | It wouldn't matter if there was an R18+ rating. If there was, those games would only sell in adult only shops, where sales would be massively crippled as opposed to MA15+ games that stock most department/videogame stores.
The real issue is that our classification board is anal, thinking that for example the decapitation of zombies because apparently they're relatively lifelike is not something that a 15 year old is capable of seeing with being scarred for life. | xNintendoCorex

11.04.09 | australia is the only developed nation that does not allow for a rating of anything more than MA15+ for games, this is true.
still, many important games that fall into this catagory (such as GTA4 for example) still manage to limbo under the guidelines by removing the odd spray of blood or prostitution mini-game.
the day will come when common sense will prevail, and mature adults such as you or I will be able to make the decision for ourselves, but we should be thankful in the meantime that some game companies put the time and effort in to accomodate for our backwards ratings system at all, rather than just not releasing the game entirely. | Fapper

11.04.09 | yeh i agree with that jim, at the end of the day people are responsible for their own actions, if someone purchases an 18+ game and commits a crime, they should still be held accountable.
Anyone who purchases and can still function in society should be given that choice to do so. | handoman

11.04.09 | Yeah because it was a kiss of death for publishers. If you made an AO game (like Rockstar did many times), they would make the necessary changes to drop it to a M rating. This happened with every game that was given an AO rating before it hit the shelves, so they just did away with it.
Only a few games have ever hit retail with an AO rating, but they all sold incredibly poorly. | cvlts

11.04.09 | Exactly. Games get censored or modified for rating agencies in the US as well, just in kangaroo land here we don't hear about it. Hell, if there was an R18 rating, I'd almost think that the classification board would be more willing to use it.
So anyway point is, if people are rilled up about L4D2 getting modified and other occasions like this, instead of getting all up in arms in favour of an R18 rating, they should be putting pressure on classification board's decision since the prior doesn't mean squat in the end. | Jim
11.04.09 | theres not really much the classication board itself can do, however. they can only use the guidelines that are made for them, so if a game is seen as unfit to be rated MA, its simply banned. the pressure should be put on the government to act on the issue, and re-draw the guidelines.

Guidelines are vague though and open to interpretation.
For L4D2 for example, according to gamespot here:

The review board took exception to the "insufficient delineation between the depiction of general zombie figures and the human figures, as opposed to the clearly fictional 'infected' characters," saying this point was central in its appraisal of how the game would affect minors. "
High impact violence for example is completely subjective. I don't think they'll ever make the guidelines any more specific either, simply because they'd prefer it to be all encompassing and at their discretion. | Big Baby Jesus
