Post Metal/ Rock Of '09?

So there hasn't been alot of solid post rock or post metal I've heard or even alot of post rock or post metal in general. So these are the records I've heard and give me some psot rock and post metal record I don't have. K thanks.

Kinda reminds me of a more post metal version of Johnny Truant. Not as good as I was hoping but still fantastic.

Riceboy Sleeps

So apparently this is the album thats making everyone question if everything Jonsi touches turns into gold. Well I guess I'm in the minority here but my opinuin is that this is one of the best minimalist/ambient records since Stars Of The Lid's opus And Their Refinement Of The Decline which is record that Riceboy Sleeps draws a lot of comparisons from. It must be said that not everyone who likes Sigur Ros will like this, for this definatly is not a Sigur Ros record, the only comparison I can think of is that the album's highlight Indian Summer contains a beauty that reminds me alot of everyone's favorite Sigur Ros piece Untitled 3. Very textured, yet raw with artist expression, Jonsi and Alex's Riceboy Sleeps is basically the basically the musical equivalent to a picture being painted.

Is it sludge? Is it doom? Is it post metal? I'm not sure but there is something about the unclassifiable bleakness of Last Rites that has left quite an impression. How good [i]All The Empires of the World[/i] acually is will have to be proved with their upcoming full release (whenever that may be) but right now all I can really say is that this is awesome.

We Hum On The Way Home

Alot of instrumental music suffers from being too cute. Artists like The Album Leaf, Explosions In The Sky etc. attempt to make "pretty" music but more times then not instead of pulling on your heartstrokes they bring the zzz's and sometimes even bring up your lunch. But with We Hum On The Way Home Japanese composer Motohiro Nakashima manages to stay on the right side of cute. Mainly consisting of just piano, trumpet and acoustic guitar, this Jap manages to make some of best neo classical music I've heard since Max Richter, and music thats perfect for that picnic in park with your, probably unfaithful, lover.

It's been said over and over, 90% of post rock sucks, this however doesn't. Not to say that is revolutionary, but it is much more on the lines of Sigur Ros, focusing on the ambience instead of bulid and climax. The Christian aspect of this also cannot be denied as the last line of the record goes "and they sing hallelujah" but it is not flaunted, more just a celebratory theme for the record. Take a more generic, less amazing Sigur Ros and mix it with the ambient worship style of The Glorious Unseen and you've got Redivivus, the fantastic debut from post rock hopeful's Glass America.

You know those albums that you hear like a song off of it and you're like "this is gonna be amazing!" but it turns out to be the best song and the album isn't amazing, that was You're In My Thoughts for Arrivals. Not that this album is bad, at all, the atmosphere is chilling and it has a few 'wow' moments but it is plagued by repetitiveness and lack of ideas. Arrivals is definatly a cool album but still, damn

I was expecting some over dramatic black metal but with quite abit of recs I decided to give it a listen. I'm so glad I did. Sure the lyrics are depressing Through The Trees is one of the prettiest songs of the year. Excellent.

What We All Come To Need

So basically about 8 months ago, I went to a HMV in Calgary looking for some post metal. I heard bits of the genre but didn't own a record, so I blindly picked up City Of Echoes. In conclusion I lost the record like 2 days later and didn't give a fuck because it basically a borefest. Now it's the present day and I am quite familiar with the genre and City Of Echoes is still snoozetacular, but I really enjoyed what I heard from The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon as did almost everyone else. So you would think Pelican would go into the studio and think "maybe, we should go with the more atmospheric, epic approach other then boring listeners into submission with non stop uninspired riffs." Well you were half right.

The Dark Places Of The Earth

As much as we all would love the world to go out like described F#A# it's probably going to alot more like Lustmord's drone piece The Dark Places Of The Earth; dark, cold and boring. Basically the first and last track are all you need to listen to, otherwise just nothing happens. The opening track Fallen begins with an apocalyptic atmosphere that is quite captivating, to say the least, slowly flowing almost like a build acually making the 16 minutes fly by. Then comes the next track Atom the unsettling, dark ambience flows where you patiently await for something to happen. Nothing ends up happening until the beautiful last track which is hard to enjoy because of the impatience the album breeds. Basically this is a pretty great ambient/ drone record but like most albums from the genre, it's disappointing to think what it could've been.
