| Sputnik Ratings Breakdown
These are how I go about rating albums here on Sputnik. Each album is representative of their respective rating. | 1 | | Nas Illmatic
5.0 - GODLY. Out of the 345 albums I have rated as of making this list, only 5 have classic ratings. These are not only amazing albums that I think anyone who is into any sort of music can enjoy, but also true classics of modern music (except perhaps Bad Religion's 'The Empire Strikes First', that's a five simply because it's my favorite album by my favorite band). | 2 | | Dredg El Cielo
4.5 - AWE-INSPIRING. These are all my favorite albums. Nearly every artist who has at least one album with this rating is considered a favorite. I rec these all the time, and any list with at least one of these albums on it usually gets an INSTANT WIN from me. | 3 | | Explosions In The Sky The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place
4.0 - AWESOME. The foundation of my musical tastes. Everything here is pretty indicative of what I listen to. If I like listening to an album more than once, or if there are a few songs from it that stick in my head for days, then usually I'll give the album a 4. | 4 | | Coldplay A Rush of Blood to the Head
3.5 - GREAT. I've rated more albums 3.5 than any other rating. This is where all albums start upon first listen; if I like it enough to say "I like this album," but not enough to want to listen to it over and over again, it gets a 3.5. And I really DO like all of these albums, but either there's something slightly off about it or I haven't listened to it enough to have it jump to a 4...of course, that means that any of these have the potential to jump up or down, depending on how I feel. | 5 | | Emery I'm Only A Man
3.0 - ALL RIGHT. These albums aren't bad, but there's a definite problem with them. Either they aren't that memorable, or I only like half the songs, or they're by bands who I expected better of...something's up with it that makes the album enjoyable enough, but not one that I'd usually recommend to others. | 6 | | Linkin Park Minutes To Midnight
2.5 - MEH. Not many albums here. These are disappointments or guilty pleasures that aren't that good anyways. | 7 | | Eminem Relapse
2.0 - NOT SO GREAT. These suck, but they have a redeeming quality or two that keeps them from scraping the bottom of the barrel... | 8 | | Soulja Boy Souljaboytellem.com
1.5 - 0.5 - VARIOUS LEVELS OF FAIL. ...and then we get to said bottom. These are the worst of the worst; if I rate an album a 1.5 or below, you KNOW it's bad. These have no artistic value, should have never been allowed to be made, and illustrate EVERYTHING wrong with the music today. Right now, only three albums have the dubious honor of being within this rank...I pray to God I don't have to endure any others that might be included with them. | |

10.22.09 | This is how I rate:
5 - I didn't really understand these albums, but sputnik consensus is that they are classics, so whatever
4.5 - real good sweeps
4. my favorite albums
3.5 new albums that are good
3. all metal core
2.5 anything that's not metal
2. deathcore
1.5 Bands like BTBAM, Opeth and August Burns Red because it's cool to hate those bands, and it makes me edgy
1 - albums I never really ever listened to, but a bunch people already gave it 1's so I'm gonna gonna too. (see soulja boy, brokencyde, etc.) | AliW1993
10.22.09 | sounds like you give out 4s and 3.5s too easily imo | Yotimi
10.22.09 | Sarcastic comment.
But really, that's pretty much how I do it except I include more personal faves and albums I think best represent their respective genres in my 5s. | Masochist
10.22.09 | GBJ - LOL...good shit, there.
AliW - Truly, I do. 3.5 is my base rating, because I'm WAY too tolerant of music, so it's rare for me to listen to something I truly don't like.
The way I see it, once you get below 3.5, it starts getting negative connotations; an album rated 3 is good, but there's something wrong with it that will most definitely stop it from ever becoming a favorite. | mareep
10.22.09 | hating btbam isnt edgy it's sensible | SlightlyEpic
10.22.09 | list needs more breakdown | Masochist
10.22.09 | I'M GONNA DRIVE AND NEVER EVER SLOW DOWN
I'M GONNA DRIVE UNTIL I BREAKDOWN
PACKING MY THINGS AND GETTING OUT OF THIS TOWN
I'M GONNA DRIVE UNTIL I BREAKDOWN
...oh, not that song? | SlightlyEpic
10.22.09 | does that song have a suitable amount of juns? | Knott-
10.22.09 | 5 - albums that I find some ridiculous connection to
4.5 - basically perfect, wholly consistent and mood-altering
4 - a genre standout, something very valuable to my library
3.5 - an album with merits above most in its genre
3 - anything pleasant without becoming exciting
2.5 - average, in the truest sense - lack of anything distinctive
2 - disappointing, but still listenable
1.5 - of little to no value at all - clichéd, sleep-inducing or horrible
1 - an absolute artistic failure | robin
10.22.09 | 5 - my indesicive rating for anything catchy
4.5 - official rating of 2009
4 - 1 are void | Masochist
10.22.09 | SlightlyEpic - To answer your question, it's a Plain White T's song.
strikey - That's a better system then my own ;-) | OllieS
10.22.09 | "If I like listening to an album more than once, or if there are a few songs from it that stick in my head for days, then usually I'll give the album a 4."
Personally, this is ridiculous. An album needs at least 20 listens (as in every song 20 times) to get a 4 or higher from me. | Masochist
10.22.09 | ^^^ See, that's how I feel about 4.5's, except on rare occasions when it's immediately hard-hitting, like with Sigur Ros's '( )'. | OllieS
10.22.09 | Different strokes I guess. Lol at GBJ's post. | klap
10.22.09 | this is a good system, but i'd move everything down a notch starting with 3.5
most albums start at a 3 for me if i like them and then move accordingly | bungy
10.23.09 | Thinking about what i should rate an album often ruins the experience for me while i listen. That's why most of my music isn't rated cuz i dont really care. |
