Croat Recommends: "electronic"
A few unknown gems I must recommend to my fellow sputnikaners. While some may be relatively know or have a cult following, the majority do not - this is purely to get more people into electronic, most of these dabble in IDM, Breakcore, Drum and Bass, or a variety of all. |
1 | | Loess Loess
One of the more supremely underrated and unknown artists to ever grace electronic. Clay Emerson and Ian Pullman bring abstract, drawn out compositions with small spots of electronic abrasiveness. I truly forgot how great this album was until I listened to it again. Their last release was this year, a compilation or rare tracks in Burrows, I'll be reviewing that some time next week. |
2 | | Robert Rich & B. Lustmord Stalker
Frankly this is a dark, rich, ambient masterpiece. Robert Rich is a highly respected ambient artist and has been going 30 years strong; his collaboration with Lustmord is genius and this album is one of his best. |
3 | | William Basinski The Disintegration Loops II
The best Loops out of I-IV, one note shattered into different octaves. Natural disintegration of his tapes brings forth the name (old tapes found 15 years later in his basement nearly destroyed and falling apart). |
4 | | Tim Hecker Harmony In Ultraviolet
Mixing lush electronic backgrounds with ambient pauses, Harmony In Ultraviolet remains to be Hecker's greatest achievement. His recently released An Imaginary Country shows he has no means of slowing down. |
5 | | Calyx and Teebee Anatomy
A German duo that has captured the essence of hard driving drum and bass, nothing complex or overly saturated with arrogance - Anatomy is pure bliss in terms of the genre. Helping it progress and showing that Calyx and Teebee as a collaboration or as single individuals lead the genre. |
6 | | Autechre Incunabula
Remains to be the most consistent Autechre record, the one album that helped realize their amazing talent, their debut. |
7 | | Divination Ambient Dub Vol. II - Dead Slow
Probably his best work, while he may be one of the most unknown characters in the electronic field he has produced countless numbers of albums in tons of genres. His preferred method of bass oriented material is washed away and what is given is his best work in Dead Slow. |
8 | | Four Tet Pause
A relevant face in electronic, Four Tet has established himself as one of the leaders in his playful and uplifting style. Pause remains to be his best work. |
9 | | The Orb The Orb's Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld
While I don't believe it stands up as it did the day it was released, The Orb's debut album remains to be a landmark in the entire genre of music, not only in electronic. Spanning 2 discs The Orb's Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld mixes atmospheric rhythms and entracing samples that will surely allow you to relax. |
10 | | Tycho Past Is Prologue
Although Past Is Prologue may not be a fantastic piece of work, it still garners some legitmate attention. The summer feeling of bliss and freedom is captured on Past Is Prologue and the people who have already heard it will agree, it is truly serene in its base material. |
11 | | Chris Clark Clarence Park
Chris Clark is an interesting character, while his debut and sophomore efforts aren't extremely different they show the types of shifts and progressions he makes as an artist. I could choose several of Clark's works, but Clarence Park is a personal favorite and shows what he brings to the table on his debut. |
12 | | Quantic Apricot Morning
Mixing soul, funk, electronic, and huge amounts of bass Apricot Morning is essentially an organic and heart-warming record. Regardless of his present work and how extremely disappointing Flowering Inferno was, Apricot Morning is a great listen. |
13 | | Squarepusher Burningn'n Tree
I'll be competely honest, Squarepusher hasn't made an album I can truly appreciate. While that may be the truth his style and approach the idm sound is extremely innovative. Artists during his time have tried to master the term of 'Acid Jazz', but ultimately failed, this man was the first one to do it successfully. |
14 | | Venetian Snares Detrimentalist
Sure his debut 'Meathole' may be the more iconic album and his experimental foray into classical and idm mixes in 'Rossz Csillag Allat Szuletett' may essentially groundbreaking or his best work., I still find myself clawing towards this. After 'Rossz Csillag Allat Szuletett' was made I was unsure where he would stand. 'Detrimentalist' shows he won't shy from his roots one bit. |
15 | | Biosphere Substrata
Biosphere's approach to every album as a scenic concept album is personally rewarding. You can feel the cold icey chills in Circque or the desolate unwavering freedom of space in Microgravity. Substrata takes him to his hometown where he records the natural sounds of a winter in Sweden. Minimalistic ambience with a cold texture to boot. |
