| Top Ten Modern Guitar Players
These are (in my opinion, duh.) the best guitar players of the last ten
years or so. Keep in mind, my idea of a good guitar player might
(probably won't) line up with your idea of a good guitar player. So
let the trolling begin. | | 1 | Jack White
The most talented musician on this list (he plays everything!) and he stands
out in my mind because he brought the blues back to modern rock. Must
listens: "Ball and Biscuit", "Little Cream Soda", "Icky Thump", and of course
"Seven Nation Army" | | 2 | Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead)
Greenwood is also an incredible musician, playing instruments most people
haven't even heard of, but he really shines on guitar. Using effects and
techniques that most wouldn't even think of trying, and then mastering
them, he makes the mortal stand and scratch their heads in wonder. Must
listens: "My Iron Lung", "Electioneering", "Bodysnatchers", "Paranoid
Android" | | 3 | Matt Bellamy (Muse)
Once again, a master of several instruments, Matt brings classical music
influences and mixes them in with his own unique style, involving quite a bit
of fuzz and effects. Must listens: "Stockholm Syndrome", "Hysteria",
"Invincible", "Plug in Baby", "Knights of Cydonia" | | 4 | Tom Morello
With Rage Against the Machine, Tom brought the funk, as well as some DJ
scratching-like effects, and started a revolution. Then he kept it going with
Audioslave. Must listens: "Bulls On Parade", "Wake Up", "Guerrilla Radio",
"Killing in the Name" | | 5 | Russell Lissak (Bloc Party)
Russell speaks softly and carries some big riffs. His affinity for the delay
pedal gives him is unique sound. Must listens: "Helicopter", "Ares",
"Hunting for Witches", "Disappear Here (A Song for Clay)" | | 6 | Andrew Stockdale (Wolfmother)
Listening to Stockdale's guitar playing takes you back to the days of classic
rock legends like Jimmy Page and Tony Iommi. Must listens: "Joker and the
Thief", "Woman" | | 7 | Nick Valensi
and... | | 8 | Albert Hammond, Jr. (The Strokes)
While I can't say I'm really a fan of the Strokes in them selves, these guys
make it worth it. Equally good and they demonstrate it by trading riffs and
solos throughout songs. Must listens: "Reptillia", "Juicebox", "Vision of
Devision" | | 9 | Brian Aubert (Silversun Pickups)
Brian's understated guitar work involves building a wall of sound a la My
Bloody Valentine, but he has shown that he won't shy away from solos and
big riffs. Must listens: "Lazy Eye", "Little Lover's So Polite", "Well Thought
Out Twinkles", "Panic Switch" | | 10 | Alex Kapranos (Franz Ferdinand)
He's come up with some of the catchiest riffs in recent memory. Must
listens: "Take Me Out", "40 ft", "Bite Hard" | |

09.13.09 | No.... | Prophet178
09.13.09 | I would think you would like J Mascis. I think Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Mikeal Akerfeldt would top my favorite guitarists... I haven't really thought about it that much though. | liledman
09.13.09 | I'd say this list is more like best/most influential guitarists in mainstream rock. The best qualities half of these guys have is making 'x' style of music work in a mainstream setting. I wouldn't really call any of them bad, but they wouldn't appear in my top 10 that's for sure.... different opinions etc I guess it comes down to. | Avirov
09.13.09 | I absolutely love this list, except for Andrew Stockdale, who I don't see as anything special. But you rule for putting Greenwood and Aubert down. | syco722
09.13.09 | No Chris Storey? :/ | XulOnerom

09.13.09 | Huh.
Being a multi-instrumentalist shouldn't have anything to do with their ranking on this list, and technically playing more than one instrument doesn't make you a better guitar player.
It says Guitar players, don't bring other instruments into this.
| StreetlightRock
09.13.09 | With the exception of Andrew Stockdale who writes recyclable garbage, this is actually a really great list. | StreetlightRock
09.13.09 | Glad to see Lissak on here too, he's really amazing underneath everything else that is Bloc Party. | cirq
09.13.09 | A couple more mainstream guitarists that should be here: john mayer, omar rodriguez lopez, john frusciante, thomas erak.. | Prophet178
09.13.09 | ..J Mascis | Prophet178
09.13.09 | Even Dragonforce can't beat Through The Fire and Flames on expert... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOYxFq4NvNI | MaskAtTheMasquerade

09.13.09 | 4 is such an innovative guitarist | xNintendoCorex
09.13.09 | russell lissak and tom morello would be the only ones i respect, the rest are simply exceptional within a very specific genre | xNintendoCorex
09.13.09 | oh, and i just plain dont like muse | The Sludge
09.13.09 | Pretty decent list. One song I would place Jack White on here is "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself."
Guitarfully speaking it's one of his best. | ameypv
09.13.09 | u talk of best guitarists n yet (almost) no metal bands guitarists. | Avirov
09.13.09 | Of course... why would there be? | Douchebag
09.13.09 | CHRIS CHENEY FFS! | Zoo
09.13.09 | They'd like you over at Rolling Stone. | The Sludge

09.13.09 | ehhh.... | bodiesinflight57
09.13.09 | Pretty terrible list
Have you never heard of Josh Homme, John Petrucci, John Frusciante, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez
I mean Russell Lissack is one of the dullest guitarists in the history of time! | StreetlightRock
09.13.09 | Not at all. Lissak is one of the few guitarists who knows when to hold back when he needs to, and actually contributes to the songwriting of the band, rather than simply blitzing everything with some ridiculous display of technicality. He's far from one of the best, but the guy knows what he's doing. | TheDanSandwich
09.13.09 | Holy frick, that's a lot of comments. I will admit that I forgot about Frusciante, but that's probably due to the fact that I don't listen to RHCP all that much. Also, while I believe that John Mayer is a very good guitar player, I can't stand him. Thirdly, there are no metal guitar players on this list because I prefer substance over technicality. About the multi-instrumentalist thing, I simply find it remarkable that they are able to master several instruments, and it speaks to how much talent they have. | FadeToBlack
09.13.09 | lol typical rolling stone comment | bloc
09.13.09 | really good list. more courageous than other recent ones. | qwe
09.13.09 | DO IT LIVE | halloway
09.13.09 | not a HORRIBLE list, but it's nice to see stuff aside from metal get some notoriety. no omar rod-lopez? no adam jones? i can't see how andrew stockdale earns himself a spot on your list (i personally can't find any qualities that are undoubtedly "stockdale-style," and i think having your own identity/style is an important factor in being a great guitar player) | TrojanWhore
09.13.09 | bad list IMO, completely disregards guitarists who have actual talent and don't write watered down riffs/leads that every sod ever has heard all before. But that's your taste so fine.
My list would include Kurt Ballou, Scott Hull, Brent Hinds and a bunch of others who are maybe unfamiliar to you and your ears. | The Computer
09.13.09 | Greenwood rocks. | darksunwithin
09.13.09 | needz moar metuhl guitarz
and of course robert fripp and omar
also agreed on some of the suggestions here. i do like greenwood and bellamy thogh | shade
09.13.09 | Dan Auerbach completely shits all over Jack White. | kitsch
09.13.09 | this list is 100% pure horseshit | Titan50
09.13.09 | what's with all the hostility, 1-4 make my list EASILY | TheDanSandwich
09.14.09 | *Dripping with sarcasm* I appreciate all of your positive feedback!
I like how everyone else's opinions are wrong of they don't align with yours. That's what makes them opinions, people! | Zoo
09.14.09 | welcome to sputnik, where opinions can be, and usually are, wrong | xNintendoCorex
09.14.09 | theres nothing wrong opinions, except when theyre clearly wrong. ie jack white at number 1.
wtf? | The Sludge
09.14.09 | CLEARLY MY TASTE IN MUSIC IS DIFFERENT FROM WHAT UR GENERAL VIBE OF THE LIST SO I WILL H8 U 4 IT! | TheDanSandwich
09.14.09 | ^Lulz^ | StreetlightRock
09.14.09 | JAck White is a bloody good guitarist he just writes (mostly) shite songs |
