08.27.09 | And I would make an argument (simply to play devil's advocate, of course) that Obama is moving our nation in a more Fascist direction than a Socialist one. Just sayin.
And list is pretty erroneous except for the last three. #7 should be much higher. |

08.27.09 | how the fuck is social spending fascist? welfare+ mild regulation = an authoritarian single-party with a unified corporate state economic platform? |

08.27.09 | sorry for the double post, but if your brain thinks "axis" at the site of Obama, it scares me that you can vote. |
thebbqshrimp
08.27.09 | Well, clearly that aspect is not. I guess my arguments were more valid during his actual candidacy and campaign than they are now with his presidency. His talk of uniting businesses and classes and regions and institutions and all that good stuff was very similar to Mussolini's view of totalitarianism. Common cause for the common good, etc. He spoke a sort of dogma, which is what a fascist/totalitarian leader often does.
(For the record, I'm a massive Obama supporter. This was all just devil's advocate bullshit we talked about in my PoliSci class. Hate to post any negative arguments on Obama in fear that brainless people will come and twist everything around). |
rudolphhess88
08.27.09 | I wouldn't go as far as saying Obama is a fascist but he may very well go down as the worst president in history. Didn't think anyone would take that title from Carter but Obama is trying his damndest. Of course not much this inexperienced community organizer from Chicago can do on his 5th vacation this year.
To all the Obama disciples: What positives has he done for this country? Think before you regurgitate what you heard in the liberal media or in your left wing PoliSci course. His foreign policy is a joke. Afghanistan is an UNWINNABLE war much like Vietnam, and his health care reform aka socialist redistribution of wealth will never pass.
This country is the bar which all other nations are measured because of the success of CAPITALISM. Work hard and you will succeed no matter your race, religion, sexual orientation or creed. Not good enough for Barry. He wants to undo 233 years of success so illegal immigrants can have health care! Lets punish success. Lets tax the brakes off someone like my Dad who grew up with nothing and worked 40 years in a company rising from a technician to a VP. Now he is wealthy and he should give his HARD EARNED money to some lazy sack of shit who just swam across the Rio Grande? Obama is not only a joke he is a scumbag.
P.S. RTL should be #2 |

08.27.09 | I'm not an illegal immigrant, nor am I mexican, and I don't have health insurance. And while your father's story is nice, I really don't give a shit about him. 08.27.09 | I was using abbreviations. Hardly the same.
Actually, fuck it. I can't sleep.
I'll try and make an argument that will appeal to your ultra-conservative stance of "MY MONEY IS MINE!" Fact: The millions of Americans that are without health care drive up the cost of all of your private health care expenses. Every time someone who is uninsured gets sick or injured, what do they do? They go to the emergency room. It's the only place they can go, because by law, the ER needs to treat all patients, regardless of their insurance situation. What happens when it comes time for them to pay? They can't, so they don't. We do. All INSURED Americans medical expenses are raised in order to make up for the losses that hospitals acquire due to UNINSURED Americans and the fact that they are indeed uninsured.
Also, Obama's health care plan is not one that is setting up a sole body of public health care. It is a public OPTION. Privatized health insurance will still exist for those who can afford it/desire it. However (again, going after the "SAVE MY MONEY!" argument), by having the public (free) option, it will force private health insurance companies to lower their rates in order to compete.
"to some lazy sack of shit who just swam across the Rio Grande"
I'd like to see you and try and swim across the Rio Grande, Mr. Not-so-lazy.
|
rudolphhess88
08.27.09 | So we pay through taxes instead? How about the 8% payroll taxes for not offering health insurance? What happens to the small contractor with two or three employees who cannot take a hit like that? They fire people or close their doors. Why not give tax incentives instead of a public option? Because only those who pay taxes would benefit from it, not the precious illegal's, who, NEWSFLASH: Do not belong here!! Of course the public option is the way to go because Medicare, Social Security, the Post Office, the car industry and every other gov't run entity is just flourishing! |
Athom
08.27.09 | tbh I take the bill maher comparison as a compliment. and just so we can become acquainted, since I think you're so cute, I'm 22 currently going to school for radiology (former poli-sci major), have a mother who is a pharmacist and my dad works for the post-office. I don't take welfare. I have no problem with taxes when they are reinvested in programs to the tax payers instead of perpetuating rampant militarism or wasted bureaucratic squabble. My not having health care comes from me living within my means, not on that of my parents. Being involved with the healthcare industry by future job training and through my mom, what I will say is that a public option still leaves open the private health-care that you love, and to be honest would make it more affordable. Since the federal government has enormous clout it would lower procedure and drug costs and that would not be passed on to your insurance company, it would actually give them leverage to demand the same prices (this has happened with medicare). Beyond that, I believe that a government that provides social spending is the next step in our social evolution. Obviously you don't share that same belief. Beyond that, your argument that he is doing it for illegal immigrants is unfounded because the bill that passed in the house granted a public option only to US citizens and those who are in this country LEGALLY (go read the bill). Beyond that, I agree with you on Afghanistan and Iraq, but the thing you have to remember is that we are there acting as a peace force and that even if you want our troops to leave, which I do, it opens up a humanitarian issue given that there will be an influx of violence if we leave, and we will be blamed for it. Also, taxes are the "redistribution of wealth". And I know you're thinking that I am sucking from the teat of Obama at the moment, but to be honest I am kinda pissed off at him. But it's due to the fact that he is so caught up in his popularity that he is not pushing his agenda through the legislature, instead relying on the senate to come up with a bill, so that if it fails, he has someone to blame and that he can skirt the fault. Nice talking with you.

08.27.09 | This 8% penalty you are referring to only applies to employers with payrolls of $400,000 a year or more that fail to provide health insurance. Between $250,000 and $400,000 would be a smaller penalty, and smaller than that is exempt. So, can't see your contractor with three employees falling into that 8% penalty bracket. Granted, I see your point on how this bill could have a negative effect on some small-business owners, and obviously there are some kinks that still need to be worked out.
And illegals may not "belong here" legally, but the fact of the matter is that for the most part illegal immigrants are vital to sustaining yours and my current state of living. They'll take the jobs that we (yes, I'll include myself in this. I do not come from a poor family) white collar citizens would prefer not to.
And Medicare and Social Security are both going just fine, actually. Not sure 'bout the USPS... not informed. And the car industry actually isn't government run! Or, at least it wasn't until it completely collapsed. Actually, now that the federal government has stepped in, it's on the rise. |

^ ...and you're saying this is a bad idea bbqshrimp?
And Adam: all of your talk sounds nice, until you look at the nations where socialized medicine HAS been implemented. Great Britain, Canada, etc. The waiting lists at clinics are several MONTHS long, and the places are dirty and inefficient because there's no competition. There are droves of people coming from those countries OVER TO OUR COUNTRY to get healthcare, because the (socialized) care in their countries suck so bad. Our system's bad, but it ain't THAT bad. Sometimes you just gotta pick the lesser of two evils. |

08.27.09 | Mr.Stan the information that you've stated is not accurate. Primary care is not denied or put off in those systems, while there are waiting lists it is for surgeries that are not for life-threatening matters. A lot of misinformation has been spread on this subject. Take the commercial that ran a while ago about the lady from Canada that came to the US since her nationalized health care denied her operation. The commercial made it out like she was on the verge of death and was saved by the graces of the US healthcare system, but in reality she only had a small non-cancerous cyst that posed no health threats. I suggest you read http://www.denverpost.com/opinion/ci_12523427 |

08.27.09 | From 1513 to 1972, the throne of Denmark was held only by men named Christian or Frederick. Christian II ascended the throne in 1513, followed by Frederick I in 1523, then Christian III in 1534, and Frederick II in 1559. The line of succession continued in this fashion, with names alternating with every king, until Frederick IX was succeeded by Margaret II in 1972. This proves that Obama is a bad president. |

08.27.09 | Interesting reads from both of you. Well at least they want to improve the wait times. But anybody from Canada will tell you wait times are still a HUGE problem. You can read this if you want, it addresses this quite well...http://www.liberty-page.com/issues/healthcare/cansurgery4.html
Adam: primary care is not SUPPOSED to be denied, though that isn't always the case. And even if getting a surgery isn't a life-or-death matter, it's still a freaking surgery! that's usually a pretty serious thing--and not something i'd want to put off for a several years(and yes that is happening).
But anyway i actually think the Canadian system is quite good, except for two glaring problems: #1--the LONG waiting lists, and #2--it costs WAY too much. The system is basically on the verge of going broke, to the point where they're having big layoffs, which means even longer waiting lists. And because they're broke, the medical equipment is mostly outdated, meaning the quality of the care only gets lower. I mean come on: if there's so many people coming over here FROM CANADA to get healthcare (and there are, it's well documented), there has to be some good reasons. A good AP article on this stuff can be found here: http://www.liberty-page.com/issues/healthcare/canfreeandfirst.html
And keep in mind that the Canadian healthcare system actually isn't completely socialized. The fully socialized systems are the ones over in Europe, and that's where you run into the REALLY bad problems. |
