08.25.09 | i think my first metal band was system of a down. try toxicity.
any nu metal would work fine too actually. |
Yotimi
08.25.09 | First metal album I ever liked was Ride the Lightning. It's pretty easy to get into I think, especially with Fade to Black. |
Metalstyles
08.25.09 | start off with Disturbed, they are a great gateway band. Also, maybe try Amorphis as they mostly use clean vox |

08.25.09 | death is this communion |

08.25.09 | If we're talking more extreme metal, clean vocals are almost an impossibility. That being said, for extreme metal, the first band I ever got into was The Black Dahlia Murder. Excellent example of Melodic Death Metal. For less extreme, more pure heavy metal, I'd go with a band like Iron Maiden. For thrash, I'd go with Megadeth over Metallica, although Metallica is great, too. |
Athom
08.25.09 | tbh, I second High on Fire. |
shindip
08.25.09 | pig destroyer thatll whip em into shape |

08.26.09 | Ride The Lightning was my first heavy metal album as well, still probably my favorite. I'd recommend Iron Maiden to be honest. Or Tribute by Ozzy Osbourne, it's a good transition from rock to metal. |
Boognish
08.26.09 | Isis - Panopticon

08.26.09 | amon amarth |
shade
08.26.09 | Start with Mastodon. |
Poet
08.26.09 | lol@Amon Amarth. I love them, but didn't even appreciate growls/screams until I was listening to metal for about two years.
Ride the Lightning is a great place to start. Maybe try a heavier power metal band like Iced Earth. |
combustion07
08.26.09 | Cryptopsy! HAHA I'M SO FUNNY
But seriously my first metal album was Metallica Master of Puppets but SLipknot s/t was the record that turned me into the face melting metalhead I am today.
Also, I say skip out on Megadeth because I doubt he'd like their vocals, and it would be nice to know what your friend listens to typically... |
EyesWideShut
08.26.09 | dude u need some of these classics and enjoy. Nu-metal is just shit metal. Disturbed and System are just Hot Topic poster boys. Go with the old school. New Mastodon aint bad ether for a new listner.
metallica - master of puppets
danzig - II Lucifuge
iron maiden - number of beast
slayer - south of heaven
down - Nola |
Boognish

08.26.09 | Baby One More Time by Britney Spears |
combustion07
08.26.09 | Oh none of you who are under the age of about 25 can say Nu-Metal didn't start your descent into what you like now, nu metal isn't the best but it molds good taste when the person branches out. Quit being close minded goatfuckers |
Boognish
08.26.09 | I'm under 25 and can proudly say that nu-metal never had any influence on my musical taste. For that i can repoint you in the direction of 'Tragedy: All Metal Tribute to the Bee Gees' |
combustion07
08.26.09 | Your still a goatfucker lol
I know for a fact some people who talk bad on nu-metal have praised albums in the genre. |
charlesfishowitz
08.26.09 | make a list about it |
combustion07
08.26.09 | You goatfuckers don't deserve a list.
Seriously though Nothingface=Pure golden nu-metal nugget |
joaogil
08.26.09 | me too...i've never enjoyed nu-metal...but i still recommend you Baby One More Time by Britney Spears |
combustion07
08.26.09 | Really no one is with me on Nothingface here? |
EyesWideShut
08.26.09 | Tool - Lateralus ... if u dig any prog rock this would be ur new best friend.
And I thought Korn and Limp where like the heavest bands in my elementery years, until my uncle who is a Old School Metal head blasted me with fuckin Pantera and Morbid Angel. Never looked back since. Also I didnt have sputnik to tell me how bad those bands were. |
joaogil
08.26.09 | i think it means badjouras in Kikongo |
joaogil
08.26.09 | Lateralus is so overrated here....Pitchfork actually gave it 1.9 out of 10....i'd give it more or less the same |
combustion07
08.26.09 | Lol like you fuck goats, I don't know its just a random thing I say.
But for me Nu-Metal helped my taste because when I heard Soulfly I found Sepultura and lots of old school thrash, then I discovered death metal then I found sputnik etc.......
I guess it isn't the same for other people as it is for me, but overall Nu-Metal completely molded my taste in music today. |
FreePizzaDay
08.26.09 | Iron Maiden -- Number of the Beast is seconded. |
XNoMercyX
08.26.09 | Basically any nu metal record that isn't Limp Bizkit, it really set the foundation for my future endeavors into the heavier side of metal. Hell, I still love some nu metal till this day. |
Observer
08.26.09 | I'd go with Linkin Park, Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold, Slipknot, or Sonic Syndicate.
Not really technical amazing bands, but they are certainly good starts for the average listener interested in metal.
Next go for some melodeath like In Flames more mainstream releases and work your way back.
All That Remains and Killswitch Engage are good metalcore bands that appeal to casual listeners with clean choruses and such as well. |
TricksterGRex
08.26.09 | Beherit - Drawing Down the Moon |
R6Rider
08.26.09 | somehow I don't think this one would work^ |
R6Rider
08.26.09 | good point |
TricksterGRex
08.26.09 | get some Bone Awl its pretty accessible |
pizzamachine
08.26.09 | Black Sun by Ra. Clean vocals. No screaming. Very melodic. Heavy enough for a starter, but not that heavy. |
joaogil
08.26.09 | Britney Spears has clean vocals |
JacobsLadder
08.26.09 | Black Sabbath (early) or Iron Maiden ( stay away from Fear of The Dark, Virtual XI, and The X Factor). |
myhigherpie
08.26.09 | first metal band I ever got into was pantera. have your friend give them a shot. |
Douchebag
08.26.09 | Iron Maiden - Number Of The Beast
Metallica - RTL or Black Album
Blues For The Red Sun - Kyuss
Judas Priest - Painkiller
Megadeth - Rust In Peace
Black Sabbath - Paranoid |
46andtwo
08.29.09 | try linkin park and korn |
Emim
09.22.09 | Start with some hard rock or Nu-metal, it should be more of a progression than an immersion. |
Transient
09.22.09 | thrice (artist in the ambulance/illusion of safety) -> protest the hero (kezia/fortress) -> coalesce (012:2/OX) -> dismember (like an ever flowing stream/the god that never was)

Sabottheory
09.23.09 | Not counting nu-metalish stuff my first metal bands were Iron Maiden and Soulfly. I got into more extreme music with bands like Soilwork, Dimmu Borgir and Amon Amarth, though. |
LepreCon
09.23.09 | Thrice aren't even close to metal, Transient |
qwe3
09.23.09 | theyre good at getting people into heavy stuff though. think that was more his point |
Transient
09.25.09 | lepercon are you fucking retarded, do you honestly think i don't know that thrice aren't metal
they're just an easy heavy-ish band to get into which can lead into metal without going the shitty nu-metal route that people are suggesting |
Fxxkit13
09.25.09 | De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas for Attila's "operatic" vocals lol |
WhiteWallStargazers
09.25.09 | Converge - Jane Doe |
Phrike
09.25.09 | Metallica - Master Of Puppets (that was my first metal album)
Or try power metal which is the most accessible genre imo, for example Primal Fear or Edguy |
Transient
09.25.09 | if he's going to listen to power metal he should at least listen to good power metal like kamelot or blind guardian |
