| 5 Underrated Bands
I was about to make a list of 5 overrated bands, but I decided to go the positive route and give some attention to bands that I feel haven't gotten enough credit. I hope you'll check some of these bands out. | 1 | Low
Low has been flying under the radar since 1993. They've been called "slow-core" (a label they apparently don't like) and have been continually evolving their sound for over 15 years. They began with long, lo-fi, slow moving songs and have over time added more instrumentation and electronics, and their songs now include a bit more of a poppy feel and less of a long droning atmosphere. The important part is that it all sounds excellent. It's a smart move, as they retain their identity, but still evolve and expand their music, and don't grow stale.
Some songs to check out are:
Monkey,
Down,
In metal,
Point of Disgust | 2 | Klimt 1918
No that is not a mistake, that is the proper spelling of this wonderful Italian band's name. I stumbled across these guys on itunes and instantly fell in love with unique style. I would describe their sound as dreamy shoegaze alt-rock pop songs. Crazy, right? Well, they have a special sound, that is a very unique hybrid, that they pull off excellently. I really wish these guys would get over to the U.S. so they could get the exposure they deserve.
Some songs to check out would be:
Snow of '85,
Rachel,
Skygazer | 3 | Rival Schools
A hardcore supergroup, featuring members of Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits, CIV, and Youth of today. These guys got together and wrote some truly brilliant and honest songs. "Undercovers on" is powerful and heartbreaking, and one of my favorite songs of all time. It's a shame they only put out one cd, United by fate. Here's hoping their recent re can yield a new album anywhere the greatness of United by fate.
Songs to check out:
Check out all of their 1 and only cd, United by fate. | 4 | Failure
Ah, Failure, truly one of the great lost bands of the 90's. They should have been huge. They made one of my favorite cd's of all time, Fantastic Planet, and their other 2 full-lengths, Comfort and Magnified, are great as well. Their unique brand of space rock, has been ripped off, but never equaled. Frontman Ken Andrews is truly a great songwriter, and here's hoping he gets the band together sometime for a re
Some songs to check out:
Stuck on you,
Pillowhead,
Undone,
Heliotropic | 5 | Hum
You know Hum right? No? well you have to know their one fluke hit song "Stars". It's been covered by a few bands like Evergreen Terrace and Bleeding Through and it was in a cadillac commercial. Well, anyway, Hum were a great band and offered much more than just "stars" Their 2 full lengths, You'd prefer and astronaut and Downward is Heavenward, are both excellent. Lead singer Matt Talbot was a great lyricist. His lyrics were cryptic, yet still very relateable and honest.
Some songs to check out:
Honestly, you should just check out both their full albums, it's too hard to pick the best songs off of them for me. | |
